It seems to be the method so many singers are using, today. Usually it's an attempt to produce a bigger sound. It's actually sad, because when the placement is good, it's a beautiful voice, but you're correct; it is often to far back, and he should get it fixed. I noticed it the first time I heard him, a few years back.
