- Smash Driver Off The Deck!? Or Hit 3-Wood? In this video I use the Cobra F9 Speedback driver test the age old question. Should you try and smash driver off the deck to reach the green? or should you just hit a 3-wood or even lay up? I use the Cobra f9 baffler 3-wood to make it a fair test. Can you hit a driver a long way off the deck? Is it possible to hit 300 yard drives from the deck? is driver vs 3-wood off the fairway an interesting shout? or is it a bit of fun? How far can you hit a driver off the deck? how do you adjust your swing to hit a driver off the deck? lets find out... and lets do it now!

Maybe you should go and ask old man pat? Enjoyable to watch but what about trying the same test on the course, sometimes the ball will sit up nicely. Keep up the good work.
I can do driver off the deck. I feel it’s MY shot. I only use it if it calls for a fade and there’s nothing in front of the green
Driver I have is only 5 wood size (25 yrs old PGF set) so use off deck when going into the wind to keep it low, so works for me but much smaller head compared to current clubs , cheers and thanks 👍😊
As you say, high risk strategy. 3 wood or driving iron (in the summer) gets my vote. Great video James, keep them coming.
I use the driver of deck to our only par 5. Providing I'm into wind. I find it shoots much lower than 3 wood. I also think an OK struck driver off deck goes similar distance to OK struck 3 wood. So for me I so game this shot in the right circumstances. Links golf this is a great shot to have in the locker.
Was playing on Troon with two guys I had never met. I pulled it off on one of the final holes. Into wind to reach par 5 in two! That's when you look like a superhero....
I've also done it in club championship and topped it 100 yards into a bunker and lost the hole... Then went on to lose by 1...

I do hit driver off the deck, but my course is firm and fast so I get more roll and therefore distance.
Interestingly enough, I've also found that the F9 driver off the deck is draw bias and not fade as expected
The right ball position in your stance, right lie, and being able to tell your self you can make it happen works most times. In the course of a season i might do this 2 maybe 3 times. Once you build the confidence its like any other shot. But i will say their is nothing like the feeling when done right. Practicing makes this shot possible yes you will miss alot until you get it down, than take it into your game. My handicap is 12, and I use my Callaway epic 9°if i can do it anyone else who wants to can!!!
Bertha mini off the deck went straight up, straight right left until I was hitting the sweet spot every time I was laughing every time
I can do it but it WAS a lot easier with persimmon drivers! 👍🏼👍🏼
Ping Eye 2 was a breeze
A good driver off deck usually cuts and gets pretty decent distance, bad one is a knob 50 yds forward 🙈
I used to hit driver off the deck a lot, when drivers were about the size of modern 3 woods.
I play a links course I cut a driver off the deck on long par 5s all the time. You've just got to remember to aim slightly left and cut it in
I hit my first driver off the deck in about 20 years recently. Was playing with my backup set which has no 3 wood. Worked out great! Normally would have just hit a 3 iron instead. Lie has to be good and just hit down on it a little which is different to hitting driver upwards off the tee.
Ive hit driver off the deck a few times in the last year or so. It tends to fade but into the wind I think it goes further than a 3 wood. I would only do it into a howling gale and in a bounce game. Very satisfying when it works though. One other thing, the ball looks tiny!
it all depends on if you have practiced the shot enough to try it. Me? - always going to pull the 3W. I'm never in a place or moment where i would need to think driver off the deck- LoL! Keep up the great work James!!
Makes sense, also the dispersion long to short is better with the 3W. If I saw the numbers correctly the 3W was from 232 to 256 yards in distance, while the driver was 240 to 270 yards - since the idea is to hit this on the green I'd rather take the 24 yards slot of the 3W over the 30 yard slot of the driver.
When I have a shot from about 180-210 and it has to stay low, I have been using the driver when I have a halfway decent lie. Hit a little headhunter carrying about 170 with a 10-20 yard fade (I’m not the longest hitter). If I top it, it’s usually goes about the same distance as a safe chip out. Kinda nice to have in the bag when your opponent thinks your in jail. My success rate is about 7 or 8 out of 10. Don’t think I’d use it on a second shot from the fairway into a par five or long par four, unless there was absolutely no trouble around the green and the lie was sitting up nicely.
Never even tried driver off the deck! Considering changing from 3 wood down to a 5 for consistency, and better gapping to my hybrid/ irons. Good video thanks. I also play at a tight parkland course, could be a strong influence 😂😅

I recall watching Ricky doing it a few years ago. he made it work. I can't see my self doing this on a game.
James I was in a scramble I went first hit 3 wood safe my other players fallow ed with driver off the deck none went as far as the 3 wood .3 woods today go far it's just hard to hit driver off deck

I used to love hitting driver off the deck with my Mizuno Mp-60 (faded but went well) now I have the Mizuno jpx 900 I don't feel comfortable because of the movable weight in the bottom
In all fairness, I suck at hittin' woods. The first time I tried driver off the deck I blasted it right down the middle. Every time since has been a disaster. 9 out of 10 I'd be better off hittin' a pitchin' wedge😂👍

a few years ago my usual golfing mate hit Driver off tee, driver off deck to not far from pin high just off the left side of green then holed it by putting with driver for eagle on par 5 18th!!😮😮

Driver off the deck (grass ) totally different test. That plastic mat will help the poor strikes unlike grass as it will bounce and skid into back of ball. Hit it fat off grass see the difference
Did you see the bad strikes Matt? I totally disagree. With the lack of loft the synthetic mat just turns the face and shuts it down even more. The mat we use is as close to a fairway as you can get. The roughs a totally different ball game
James Robinson Golf yes but the mat won’t flow the club head down as much as grass or turf. That’s my point.
Driver very poorly, 2 wood yes and well, but before Pitsburg Persimmon came out. Golf rules - no change to clubs during the round; if I altered my adjustable 3 wood to a 2 wood loft mid round and counted it as 2 clubs - could that work and save weight in the bag??? Kind of academic as I now struggle to hit my 3 wood. Gr8 video thx.

It can be prett good into the wind though.
depends on loft to start with. i have 10.5 on my driver which with the right conditions can work but 99 out of 100 would go with 3 wood

Saw a Justin Johnson vid ,,,hits down on it like 7 iron,,dead easy even a bad hit goes 170,,,and a good in par 5s in 2,, plus it's fun,🤗

Maybe with the right lie ... and not serious trouble left.
I've done it and will continue to hit driver off the deck only if I have any type of uphill lie, it can work well but dead level to any kind of downhill lie is just a waste of a stroke.
Should be done on course not off a mat. Would be a whole different story in muddy UK conditions where the rails on the 3w would have the advantage

For some reason I can’t get anymore distance from my 3W over my 5W, at least not consistently.
best 281 to the stick water short of the green bunker behind the green slightly uphill lie in some fluffy rough ball was sitting up almost like a on the tee flew driver all the way there pin high 15 feet made the eagle. worst hooked OB
I will answer before I even watch the video... I hit a 3 wood 265 but I tried driver off the deck and that is a NO GO!!!! I cant hit it at all, I would get better distance using my 4 iron.
Which flight scope do you use?
Surely it’ll put some amount of strain on the shat of the driver as they’re not really built for it

No. most people can't hit a hybrid off a good lie much less a driver
Do it in the range quite a bit, good results but a bit bottomy, but why risk it on the course. Clearly played a crap shot in the first place so take your medicine and stop being greedy
