- Theyyam is a traditional ritualistic art form that originated in the northern part of Kerala, India. It is a vibrant and ancient form of worship, blending elements of dance, music, and drama. Theyyam is performed to honour and invoke the blessings of deities, ancestors, and heroes. It was my dream to witness Theyyam performance and finally I was able to do it. Now that I have seen it from my eyes, I can say that I have never seen anything as intense as this in my life.

Now let's talk about Theyyam:
Cultural Significance: Theyyam is deeply rooted in the cultural and religious traditions of Kerala. It is considered a sacred ritual that connects the human with the divine.
Ritualistic Transformation: Before the performance, the Theyyam artist undergoes an elaborate ritualistic transformation. The makeup, known as "Vellattam," involves intricate designs using natural pigments. The costumes are vibrant and represent the divine beings they embody.
Dance and Music: The performance involves a unique dance style characterized by slow, majestic movements and intricate gestures. Traditional percussion instruments like Chenda, Elathalam, and Kuzhal accompany the dance, creating a rhythmic and captivating atmosphere.
Diversity of Forms: Theyyam encompasses a wide range of deities and characters. Each form has its own unique costume, makeup, and style of performance. Some popular Theyyam forms include Vishnumoorthy, Raktha Chamundi, Muchilottu Bhagavathi, and Karim Chamundi.
Spiritual Invocation: The performance is not just a visual spectacle; it is a spiritual invocation. During Theyyam, the artist is believed to be in a state of divine possession, channeling the energy and presence of the deity they represent.
Sacred Spaces: Theyyam is often performed in sacred groves, temples, and open grounds. The choice of location adds to the ritualistic significance, creating a sacred space where the divine can be invoked.
Festivals and Celebrations: Theyyam is an integral part of religious festivals and celebrations in Kerala. Communities come together to witness and participate in the performances, creating a sense of cultural unity and spiritual devotion.
Community Participation: Theyyam is not just a performance for an audience; it involves active participation from the community. Devotees often seek blessings from the Theyyam artist, believing that the deity is present in the performer.
Ancient Roots: The roots of Theyyam can be traced back to ancient tribal rituals and animistic worship practices. Over time, it evolved into a sophisticated art form that integrates various elements of Kerala's cultural history.
Preservation and Promotion: Efforts are being made to preserve and promote Theyyam as an integral part of Kerala's cultural heritage. Festivals and events dedicated to Theyyam attract both locals and tourists, providing a platform for artists to showcase their skills.
Theyyam is a mesmerizing cultural treasure that not only showcases the artistic prowess of the performers but also reflects the deep spiritual and cultural roots of the people of Kerala.

to see our traditional Theyyam 🙏
Kannur is amazing place and unexplored . You land in Kannur airport , stay at a beach house , visit forts and beach in the city , watch a Theyyam performance at a near by temple. Then you can travel to Nileswar /Payyanur to experience House Boat on back water . A trekking expedition to PytalMala , a drive to Wayanad & Coorg and staying at a plantation home along with wildlife spotting in 2 world class national parks will conclude your Kannur experience .
Have been to Kerala twice, but didn't know about Theyyam.Thankyou Desigirl for bringing this hidden gem, added this to my bucket list ❤

Amazing ! Thank for this 👏🏽🙏🏽
Exellent work 👌👌
This is part of the ancestral and nature worship style of North Kerala. Vedic brahmanism was infused into this much much later in fact after Jainism and Buddhism. In some theyyams like in Andalurkavu you can watch all three indigenous traditions , budhist traditions , and Vedic brahmanic traditions. How it can be possible , because historically north keralites were non dogmatic and they welcomed all new dogmas and took the best of all.
Thank you so much for your efforts 😊
Thanks for making video.
I really known all about culture of Kerala through this video ❤
Thanks Priyanka for sharing this wonderful and unique experience with all of us really grateful cheers and happy new year in advance 🎉🎉

Thank you😊
Had read about it in "Nine Lives" by William Dalrymple. Always want to see it live.
I had heard about a mysterious event, which occurred a few decades ago. Once a man from Kannur happened to watch an exhibition in Kochi. It was a large number of paintings of a child prodigy, Clint, who reached the abode of God when he reached five. Among the paintings, one particular one was so captivating and the man enquired about the painter, without knowing Clint. He said that he's a Theyyam performer. While preparing for Theyyam, he says that, the devotional artists will make it 99% perfect, leaving one percent imperfect. It's believed that anyone does to make it perfect then it's time to visit Almighty's abode. He added that the painting is so perfect, 100% . Moreover, Clint never visited Kannur nor watched Theyyam before.

Wonderful to watch , i can not understand how so good people , how so good culture how so rich cultivation land inspite so many people have drfifted from main culture and have been drifted and deviated to some other culture and other religion though i respect all cultures and religions
. So beautiful land so rich crops so much educated people do not need to go away from main land. Any thx a lot lady, you showing some very interesting truths. Not just simply food as i watch often on tube. Thx again
If the people have drifted away, why are these artforms still there? Do you know that such artforms are receiving more popularity and appreciation than what it used to receive several decades ago. On what basis are you saying the people of Kerala have drifted away from their culture?
@@pja-jh5ww i am not saying mediyas are saying again i have love and respect for all cultures and religions.
