I'd imagine that most of the DRC's population is involved in subsistence farming so it boggles the mind that they'd have to import 80% of their food as this video implies 🤔
It's very sad to say this but my people are so used to being spoon fed instead of getting food on their own. Everyone wants a blue collar job while we have been blessed with rich soil to exploit. On top of that our leaders DON'T care about the well being of the country. Its pretty much "how much money can it get while I'm in this position " type of mentality
Europe & US are still pillaging Africa to this day! African people toil in deadly conditions to provide material wealth to the global powers, meanwhile having very little political power to seize their material wealth for themselves. This is starting to change, but has been the status quo.
Most people in Demo Congo have an average of 12 children in a nuclear family. But if a guy has two wives, he can have 20 or more children. So even subsistence farming really doesn't help coz agriculture takes times to give yeilds. So most congelese are traders. I live in Zambia, DRC's neighbouring country. Interesting video. Small but big thing - you incorrectly used ‘England’ at 2:23 for your map of colonising states. Belgium didn't control Congo Free state which was in theory an independent state and private property of Leopold II, King of Belgium. Belgium took over the Congo Free state in 1908 which became the belgian Congo
Thereis a third Congo, it was annexed by Angola in the 1970s civil war. Portugal administered it as a separate colony, but the Communist soldiers from Cuba overran the place in about 1975.
It is honestly terrifying to think about. Not to mention-how much power these countries could hold. These conquered nations were being ruled by a small populace that almost certainly saw them as lesser beings for being conquered and having a different culture from the colonizers doing a hostile takeover. Conquest is an evil and terrifying thing.

In 1987 I was with 2 Brits and we went waterskiing out of the "boat club" in Kinshasa. A storm rolled in and we tried to take cover on shore directly across from Kinshasa on the shore of Brazzaville. We landed the boat next to shore and soon found ourselves with AK-47's pointed at us by 4 Congo soldiers. They wouldn't let us get out of the water and take cover. So we sat there in shallow water up to our necks, trying to shield ourselves from the pelting rain. I was more nervous of reptiles in the shallow water than I was of the Congolese soldiers. 40 minutes later the rain stopped and we slowly got into the boat and took off towards Kinshasa. Made for a great story later. Waterskiing on the Congo River is not as nice as it sounds.
There was originally 3 Congo territory's Belgium Congo , French Congo & Portuguese Congo .Portuguese Congo was invaded by Angolan & Cuban troops and is still fighting to get there rights = Cabinda war
The Chinese way to d disambiguate these two countries is to call them Congo-Bra 刚果布 and Congo-Kin 刚果金, suffixing with the first syllable of their capital name.
The DRC was Zaire until Mobutu fell and Kabila took the power which happened in the 90’s. Also, Kongo-Brazzaville like Kongo-Kinshasa are both colonial names.
I am a geography enthusiast and I am embarrassed to admit that I have very little knowledge of central African states. The fact that I am unaware of the two Congos is proof. 😅
Regarding the river, when was it named the Zaire River and when was it changed back to Congo River? Was there any opposition when it was renamed as the Zaire River?

There is no way the DRC could survive if it imported 80% of its food. It just doesn’t have the financial wherewithal to do that. I’d like you to cite your sources on this please.
Fun Fact: Without colonialism, Africa would be twice the nightmare it is today. Not only did colonialism stop truly, truly terrible occupations, it stopped many macabre practices that dominant tribes had no intention of stopping. Plus, infrastructure. Personally, I was born, raised and still live in Chad. I have spent a great amount of time in Cameroon, CAF, both Congos and Nigeria. I know first hand that even with all that went wrong, colonialism considerably raised our life expectancy. (And no, Ethiopia was not always independent. Italy built Ethiopia up and China is now updating infrastructure.) I get that it's not "cool" to recognize reality. To those of us actually here, "cool" is not a priority
Fun fact. Without colonialism and enslaving Africa and Africans, Europe would be a nightmare backwater that it soon be as Africans assert their real independence.
that's just staight up line. The truth is that Europeans have been the same thing you describe, same for Asians and Americans, but when Europeans and some Asians were able to fix a system adapted to them, create their countries after many war, that system was forced on Africans. See, Africans had Great Empires even before Europeans, which is logical since they are the first homo sapiens, they created civilisations. Even in Western Europe, Africans imported some civilisation with the Moors. They were great Empires in Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kongo and more... They eventually ended, some bc of arabs, some other bc of Europeans themselves (ex Kongo with Portugal), and eventually fell down, Africans were living appart, since they are different ethnic groups (Africa is actually the most genetically diverse place of the world, ppl didn't identify by skin color but by their ethnic group, and since they were so many, there were so many little societies, living indenpently, appart from each other. Maybe one day they woud have eventually united by wars just like Europeans, or alliance, some have similar languages so they could've united bc of that, they could've start trades with other African tribes, countries so it would've develop other "industries" but no, no one let the do that bc Europeans just wanted Africa so badly that they just came up with their systems and did their things. I feel like you forget how European societies invade without even realizing it sometimes. For example with America: sometimes Europeans would propose to only take some part of a territory to the natives, they might agree but their European lifestyle include being sedentary, building houses to stay, having children so building more to stay there (since they used to have a lot of children) and building roads, and they longer ones and the natives territories would just disapear like that. So if a thing, Europeans don't bring up new things but suppress old systems so only their one remain. In that case, it's terrible for Africa, as they consume like Europeans in non european countries. An perfect example would be meat, Africans eat it ofc but for a long it wasn't a primary element in African food, tbh you could remove meat in most of our food and you can style perfectly eat it (at least for Nigeria, Congo, Senegal, those I know the most). Also more recently, TV explain how badly Africa will be affected by the Ukrainian war since Ukraine was their main wheat exportation but the fat is that wheat isn't even that used in most African food (unless fufu and maybe some others). Now since you come from Chad, I don't know if you see any evolution but from what I see, the country is definitely not going well after colonisation, and it wasn't going well during either, the life expectancy you're talking abt could've ork if big Western corporations like Nestlé weren't there to ruin African's health, I don't know how you can live longer with capitalism, as hospital is certainly not free. Now from what I know, DRC could've been a way better place after colonization if CIA and the West didn't ruin it, by killing Lumumba, putting gouvernement that help them to get all the minerals they need, I mean they even finance Rwanda so they can kill in DRC, how are we supposed to be grateful bc "at the end of the day we have hospital" that most of the population can't use?
Unfortunately France Afrique are the only Africans I hear talk about how Africa would have been worse without colonialists..... Emancipate yourself from mental slavery... I'm a Nigerian
IDK if you can really predict that. Would you rather be ruled harshly by a foreign power or your own people? Personally, I want my own people, whether good or bad. It's impossible to predict what would have happened. Without colonization, you wouldn't have the issues with borders that have caused tons of issues over the years. Resources wouldn't have been stolen to foreign countries. Would the native rulers share that wealth? Who knows, but it would have stayed in the country, which is better regardless.
The internet estimate of mineral wealth in the country (DRC) is 24 trillion dollars. That divided by 110 million people would be $218,000 per person. Of course I realize it would not be distributed fairly or equally. Much of what makes our modern life possible (coltan and cobalt) comes from this country. Yet of course the people are some of the poorest in the world. I am visiting this country next month and I'm sure I'll get more insight.
These maps don't do the DRC justice - most of the population lives in the East near the border and lakes. That's why their history is more influenced by the likes of Rwanda and Uganda and not the other Congo, which lies beyond a massive jungle.
At 2:14 Ordination to never be colonised.... You claim that was Ethiopia, but a Jeopardy answer a number of years back said that there was two countries they had never been colonized. Unfortunately, I don't remember if they said what the name of the other country was or if they did....they probably did though. Jeopardy does pretty thorough research on things like this, so you may want to re-lick your calf to make sure you're not the one in the wrong....
I don't know, I don't even remember if they stated the name of the other country....but they usually give the " 'X'is the other answer we would have accepted" statement.
The answer would definitely be Ethiopia and Liberia. Liberia was technically not a colony of any country but was instead created by freed African American slaves. They were seen as an unofficial American colony as America would have likely intervened if any country tried to take it, but they were never officially “claimed” by America which makes them technically never a colony. TLDR Liberia was colonized but is only considered not colonized on a technicality.
Not a by an European power. But practically, it was colonized and ruled by freed slaves and their descendants who didn't ask what the opinion of the locals that found there on the matter
Interesting how with Africa they always make sure to drive home the point about colonization a least a million times, arguably to justify the current state of the continent. Do you even know who often Europe was colonized? the Middle East? Korea etc etc slavery, it‘s all of human history. The example of Ethiopia proves my point, they‘re not better off despite never having been colonized, the most successful country is South Africa which was under Apartheid until '94.
You're right and wrong at the same time; I think you're oversimplifying the issues with Africa. Also, the case of South Africa being "the most successful" depends on what your perspective is.
My friend my advice to you is to do more research on the history of Africa. Ignorance is the only thing that can make you think colonisation in Africa was like anything in world history
@@Bryan-eq6nt It‘s different because that is virtually the only 'history in (subsaharan) Africa‘, there was virtually nothing there before the Arabs and the Europeans

The author makes a point about generalizing a continent and proceeds to generalize the colonization of Africa. Africa wasnt conquered by direct colonization policies ( with the exception of Algeria and South Africa). Most of the continent was conquered via individual entrepreneurs, explorers and Christian missinaries and geopolitical concerns. Not to mention every African colony( except South Africa) was a net loss

I’m from Congo Brazzaville sadly I’ve never had the opportunity to cross the river to Kinshasa. I will have to cross whenever I’m back home.
It's true they import most of their food from us and South Africa. And guess what? Am a farmer. Lol
@@chalimutangama5840 The civilization of the African continent has been exceeded too far away by other continents, as if it has just entered the Stone Age/Bronze Age to Iron Age, with no trace of industrial civilization visible
@@chalimutangama5840 Agriculture in modern society requires ultra-high levels of industry and technology, which is much more difficult than producing cars, airplanes, rockets, and satellites. Congo is backward in agriculture is understandable,
Great job! And excellent pronunciation of all the words 👏🏽
He didn’t pronounce Angola correctly but he did well with the other countries
@@zinhle_dladla I've got Angolan friends that's exactly how they pronounce it.
The DRC's Mineral (and therefore, Human) Exploitation industry exemplifies why the tremendous cost to human lives, pollution (which also devastates local people's health), and environmental damage do NOT make battery-powered cars and business model of big tech (i.e. disposable nature of constantly upgrading, therefore, quickly trashing computers, cell phones, and other products way too frequently) "sustainable" or environmentally-friendly.
The last part really irritates me.
Interesting video. Small but big thing - you incorrectly used ‘England’ at 2:23 for your map of colonising states. England is but one part of the UK and your error would be like saying California or Texas when referring to the whole of the US. Seeing as this is supposed to be a geography channel it’s a surprising error.
Great discussion on these 2 countries. How about sharing the history of Rwanda next?
Except they left out the 3rd Congo = Portuguese Congo .
Great channel 😊
Could you please do a video on the East African Rift?
Fun Fact both capital cities in the Congo's are close to one another across from the river
Can you imagine being subdued by a country 76 times smaller than you? That would honestly be scary.
Small in geography is not small in population. Wake up.
@@MrDifficille Yeah, in 1960 the population of Belgium was 9 million, which wasn't much smaller than Congo's 15 million. And the technological disparity was immense.
These countries had significant populations compared to Africa not to mention their tiny size and large population meant they had a large ability so subjugate others. The DRC is massive with the second largest rainforest on The planet meaning people were not connected.
Belgium had the help of Satan

My biggest flaw is that I believe I can fix Africa if I felt like it
Well, now China/PLA is fixing Africa as I type.
I dream about it all the time

There was originally 3 Congo territory's Belgium Congo , French Congo & Portuguese Congo .Portuguese Congo was invaded by Angolan & Cuban troops and is still fighting to get there rights = Cabinda war
Thanks for the facts! I'm so interested in geography but not enough to read lol
Countries with “Democratic” in their title will have more people obviously😂 probably nothing democratic at all given its history of dictators.
Brazzaville and kinshasa are two most near capital cities on earth at 30miles
Forgot to mention they have the closest capitals between two countries
I still don't use the name DRC, I still use the name Zaire.
Thanks, interesting 🤔
The Chinese way to d disambiguate these two countries is to call them Congo-Bra 刚果布 and Congo-Kin 刚果金, suffixing with the first syllable of their capital name.
The DRC was Zaire until Mobutu fell and Kabila took the power which happened in the 90’s. Also, Kongo-Brazzaville like Kongo-Kinshasa are both colonial names.
second, last time I was this early, it was all Kongo
I am a geography enthusiast and I am embarrassed to admit that I have very little knowledge of central African states. The fact that I am unaware of the two Congos is proof. 😅
Angola was never part of «Central Africa»... Even in termos physical/environmental terms Angola is much more akin to «southern Africa.
Regarding the river, when was it named the Zaire River and when was it changed back to Congo River? Was there any opposition when it was renamed as the Zaire River?
Not really because they were avoiding war plus, originally it was known as Kongo river from the Kongo Empire...
In addition to Ethiopia, Liberia wasn’t colonized as well
But it was an American slave settlement
Liberia is an amerikan colony.
It was a United colony
If anyone is looking for more, I very highly recommend ‘The Poisonwood Bible’ by Kingsolver. Incredible piece of historical fiction that goes deep into Belgian occupation and the results
I agree with you. I read the Poisonwood Bible. Excellent book.

It is very sad Africans could never made Africa function. Interrupted only by the European colonizations.

I agree. Its less confusing with the other one
Nah its good
How long is the DRC’s coastline?
i thinks its around 37 km
The same reason there's North and South DAKOTA!
There is no way the DRC could survive if it imported 80% of its food. It just doesn’t have the financial wherewithal to do that. I’d like you to cite your sources on this please.
I was and raise in Kinshasa the capital City of Drc,i do work in import and export business ,80 % it is not far from the truth.
More Africa please
nothing 'democratic' about the DRC lol
I am visiting this country next month and I'm sure I'll get more insight.
the chinese are stripping the Congo to dust but they wouldnt allow there environment to be stepped to nothing by outsiders
amazing
These maps don't do the DRC justice - most of the population lives in the East near the border and lakes. That's why their history is more influenced by the likes of Rwanda and Uganda and not the other Congo, which lies beyond a massive jungle.
8:20 nice graphic!

Ordination to never be colonised....
They probably mean Liberia.
Liberia was also not colonized ,but it was created by americans ,and they brought Africans Americans to rule the country .
Liberia wasn't colonized; it was simply a home for freed slaves from the Americas
Do one about Grenada 🇬🇩
URGENT FURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't both "Congos" share some ethnic groups. The broader Bantu family of peoples is common to both. They're not that estranged from one another.
* Liberia was also not colonised.
Yes it was. It was a United States colony.
Are you dumb? Just look at their flag, it literally looks like the one of the USA

CAR, DRC and Congo should just merge into a single Central African nation.
Cameroon wasn't French from the start. It was German until WWI. I recommend you double-check when you do your research cause there seems be many of them in your video.
Not to mention every African colony( except South Africa) was a net loss
direct colonization did happen in the final years of portuguese africa
Net loss yet they continually spent billions on thousands of soldiers to occupy Africa
Correction: Cameroon was first a German colony: Kamerun. Aftr WW I it was divided between France and the United Kingdom.
The Congo is Angola kindlgdom we have just one kongo
Past injustices have merely exacerbated existing problems, not created them.
Greed is a global phenomenon irrespective of race
The same can be said about Sudan too.
