Coach, thanks for this video! A few questions for you: 1) When did you go to having Curl Flat on the backside of Cross? In the past, you had the standard dig by the R, no? What was your reasoning for going to this? What are the advantages of this? Are there any other 2 man combos for the backside that you think would mesh well with Cross? 2) Where does your receiver break on the corner route? 3) What do you think about the idea of making your Smash tag the base look for Cross, and then having the 5 yard out (or 10 yard out to pull the safety against pattern match coverage like you talked about in a previous video) by the H, and the go by the L as the change up?
One of our best plays last year was the quick screen to L. So we’ve combined Cross with it. L has the screen, F runs what he would on what you refer to as “locks” (vertical grass). Y has the cross, R runs a 15 yard dig, and the RB goes opposite flat. We like this because we essentially steal 3 plays. The fast screen if the defense bails to cover vertical grass, we get the cross if they come up, and we can just signal in our slip screen to the OL and rb and the WRs don’t know anything other than cross and because they think they’re getting the ball we get a great set up for the screen to our rb.
I use this but instead of curl flat, my backside #1 runs a thru route (high backside post) so when that safety jumps that cross route, we throw it over the top. But I will make a 'HIGH" call to tell the QB to look at the cross but throw the high post over the top of the backside safety. Love this though
We tagged Y cross (Yankee) vs man under/ mid field open look..if we were to SMASH it then I want my (H) to stem to get on top of S coverage and (Y) to bend his post high vs field open look. vs Mid field closed (Y) converts to post dig (H) runs through the seam stressing both CB/FS COMMUNICATIONS
Love it. What do you think of letting the L run a deep post at the safety. If he takes the cross away, the deep post is behind him or vice versa if he choose the post instead of the cross. Then it becomes a grass read and 1 less progression for the qb for simplicity. And backside run snag with tb, and r receiver. Now its a 2 progression play with 2 air concepts in the same play. I'm in 7v7 league and this is my qb's fav dropback play
Hey, Coach! Love the videos and the podcast. Been doing a deep dive on Y Cross the last few days, and I went back and listened to TFP 114: PhD in Y Cross with Mark Yanule. He uses lots of “here” or “there” vocabulary, and it’s hard to tell what he means by that with audio only. I tried to go to the show notes to watch the live clinic that you mentioned in the opening segment, but it said the page was down. I googled and couldn’t find a recording of the clinic anywhere. Do you have any screenshots from it of the different concepts or able to post the clinic again? The thing I’m most interested in is the “burst smash” route he talks about a lot. Is it an angle corner by the #1? Hard to tell by his descriptions in the podcast.
Coach, We run Y Sail as a flood in 3x1. We run Y Cross as our weak flood and drop out the X receiver. Not sure if this is how the air raid guys intended it...
Do you ever run that with a whip out route (slant-out) for L rather than hitch? We do this and it 1) causes some D confusion, 2) seems to improve timing, and 3) get stack benefits without change of formation. I’ve also seen teams simply have the L turn and show hands, no route just bubble look, becomes third option but really outlet. If bubble has been effective, corner runs up on it. Thoughts?
1) I meant on the Tag. Smash concept. L runs a whip out and F runs Corner. It takes longer to run that whip out and timing for 3rd option seems to be better. 2) I’ve also seen teams just have the L turn and face at LOS. Creates more grass. Clemson does this sometimes.
Would snag work just as well even though it doesn't put the same pressure on that corner? We do not run smash and I do not want to add another concept.
Coach... when we tag the "F" we tell him to attack the outside shoulder of the safety. We try to make him freeze, before he runs his corner route. Safety has a difficult time to regain his steps.
Also, benefit of flat-fade is that it opens up cross at mid-level. Fade is deep out, flat is shallow. Cross is open in between those two. With this O, we want to stretch D horizontally pre-snap and vertically post-snap. Your L and R running deep verts does this but a good twist on this is trading who is driving defense deep (slots instead of wides).

Lincoln Riley started running slot fade to the frontside, and it was deadly
I’ve notice that. Might have to try it

That’s a great idea on the HIGH call coach.
Love this! Otherwise that back side curl sometimes is a wasted route anyway (never get there time-wise/read wise).
Hey coach we have moved to the slot fade on the back side of Y-cross during on 7v7. It has but that safety in a bind. Love it.
So instead of curl/flat you do slot fade?
@@CoachMcKie instead of corner have a fade
I dig the smash in it. Getting the hang of tags now.

We’ve used the post as a tag when going against 1 high teams. Never tried the snag in the backside. Seems interesting
Coach McKie Agree with it against one high especially. All of our deep shots have quick game on backside. If they blitz he just go to the quick game.

I like this. simple and plays a defenses match concepts against them.
Yes sir. That’s the main reason why I like it. Uses the defenses responsibility against them. Also, love your channel man. Been a sub to it for years.

We don’t coach because the speed out is our ‘Hot’. The whip would mess that up.
1) I meant on the Tag. Smash concept. L runs a whip out and F runs Corner. It takes longer to run that whip out and timing for 3rd option seems to be better.

Hey coach, what program are you using here to draw up the plays?
Would snag work just as well even though it doesn't put the same pressure on that corner? We do not run smash and I do not want to add another concept.
You could whip the snag back to the sideline. You want the QBs eyes to go to the same spot. That’s why I would whip him
Coach... when we tag the "F" we tell him to attack the outside shoulder of the safety. We try to make him freeze, before he runs his corner route. Safety has a difficult time to regain his steps.
That’s a great teaching point coach.
How does that tag work vs 1 high teams, or 1/4 teams?
You don’t run F on a ten yard out anymore? Do you mind explaining why... what are the benefits of the fade/flat combo?
We don’t have the QB who can throw a rope anymore. So we’ve gone to those way of running Y Cross
Also, benefit of flat-fade is that it opens up cross at mid-level. Fade is deep out, flat is shallow. Cross is open in between those two. What depth are you telling your guys to get to on the y cross? 15,18,20 yards?
We teach 18-22 yards opposite hash. Then find grass, take grass.
What about 1 high safety. What's the adjustment?
Hey coach, you want to snap it across and turn the cross into a 10-15 yard dig.

Great Vid coach
Thanks for watching and commenting coach.
Ahh so it’s similar to the Yankee concept that pro style teams like to use for play action(corner with a deep crosser coming underneath it)
What software are you using?
It’s HUDL. Video breakdown and can draw plays in it.
stack l and f and then you can play games against the secondary, they can never tell who will run the streak or out
Great suggestion coach
How do you add the tag from your one word play?
You could create a new one word play.
hi Coach,
we also run snag/wheel with Y cross.
Are you running that on the frontside or backside?
frontside, but when we run snag/wheel our progression is TD(wheel), check down (snag)to cross. Then backside.. your oh shit.
It’s both genius and ingenious
Thanks coach. I appreciate it.
Pretty unstoppable if coached right
Yes sir. That's why I freaking love it.
In my case If R sees the safety leaving he breaks into a post replacing him
That’s smart coach. Do you practice that so your QB and WR are on the same page?
