- The verse-groove is inspired by music from Mali, with Thomas bridging 2 pedals with each foot in order to get kick-drum and splashy Hi-Hat sounds in unison. The 5-stroke roll on kick drum and Hi-Hats on the "4 and" of each bar leads into a group of four 16th notes on the "1", giving the groove a heavy vibe on the downbeat. On the last 16th note of the "2", Lang plays a heavy accent on the Gong-drum, which in combination with the busy, repetitive, low rumble of the kick drum gives the groove a distinctly tribal feel. The "off-beat" HiHat drives the groove, giving it almost a dance-feel on top of the African-inspired rhythm. The chorus-beat is an "upside down" groove, where Lang plays a HiHat pattern in 3/4 with his feet on double Hi-Hats, while playing a heavy Funk-beat in 4/4 with his left hand between Gong drum and snare drum. This is a poly-metric and poly-rhythmic layer of two rhythms where each individual layer is complex by itself and in combination with the second layer becomes an intricate rhythmic structure, with different cycles and loops stacked on top of each other. In all its complexity, this chorus beat still sounds and feels great, not overbearing and self-serving. "ProgPop" is available on iTunes and CD Baby.

There isn't a drummer in the world who's doing this kind of stuff right now. Yes, it's true that Virgil, Marco, and Mangini are amazing as well, but Thomas actually comes up with REALLY COOL and original parts that are ridiculously difficult to play but actually groove still.

This is one of the songs I had the hardest time understanding the drum part on the record - now I know why! Insane as always, and love that fact you're putting these on YT for us all to enjoy for free. This album deserves to be remembered as a benchmark for 21st century drumming; it'll probably be a benchmark in the 22nd century as well!

I'm a drummer and yes Thomas Lang is the most independent player that exists, that being said no music is a competition to a certain extent then it is on a professional level because your competing for endorsements. I notice People for some reason like too compare Thomas too Donati but if you really drum Donati is a badass but Thomas is pushing drums too a new level especially in independence and just basically overall in general. He's basically a one man orchestra and it's such an inspiration at least too me but this is all just my opinion and anyone else has a right to there on so I respect that✌drum brotha's!!!

It's a Drummer's Solo Album, what did you expect? I think it's great that he "overplays". It's obviously deliberately designed to be busy drumming. Excellent showcase of Thomas' chops and creativity. I would also like to appreciate the fact that this is a ONE TAKE performance of the song and it's flawless. Gotta see the huge merit in that dudes! What a legend TL! A true inspiration for all of us.

I was bored, so I decided to look for something impressive drumwise and for some reason I instinctively typed Thomas Lang. This isn't what I was expecting at all, this blew my mind! Just when you think everything has been done, enter Thomas.

Tribal ,now your talking my taste .I'll never be near as good as Thomas but,I can sure bang out some heavy tribal beats ,his independence is off the charts ,I struggle mightily with independence of 4 limbs doing some thing different at the same time ,watching Thomas has really helped .Merci.

I have been playing for over 45 yrs now, but I had to retire due to PAIN 2 yrs ago. I'm hoping I'll get back to it some day but at 60 yrs old?...?...I don't know. But even with all those yrs playing, I would have to be trained by you or someone almost a good as you are and play for ?...another 10 or 20 yrs and then I don't think I could keep up to your AWESOME technique and prowess, etc. It's gonna be real fun to chat drums with you in Heaven, ?...?...if I make it there???

I was always amazed how Thomas is able to squeeze out an amazing groove from a simple rhythm! Now, instead of a song, I'm listening to a bit :) Thomas' drum sound is an example of the best sound for me! But in this video I did not understand the sound :(. Sorry. If the whole set sounds, then the sound of the plates spoils everything. I understand that there is a need to emphasize the difference in sound of each of the cymbals and the harractor is not at high frequencies. But it turned out that cimbals sounds like the rustle of hay. :) Anyway thanks for the video! As always, delight from the very "thought"! Groove is just a bomb!

By the way, Thomas, it would be beneficial to approach the mixing and mastering of tracks going to YT separately. This one sounds smaller, as it's been pulled down 6dB! It's possible to make the drums pop more and not lose the other parts too!
For me, I need like fifty more toms and cymbals, I'll also need four legs and arms. This drummer is insanely good.

Hi Thomas. One Question: when you play the 5 stroke roll with your feet you use the heel down technique, and the sound of the bass drum is the same that when you play heel up. how you do that because the heel up naturally produces and louder sound. Thanks in advance.
The sound is based on speed and distance away from drum at start. Thus, if it has the same velocity when he presses down, and the mallet is back far enough (which you can see it's the same heel up or down), then it produces the same sound. They're not all the same, both feet and the kickdrum he plays with a stick all vary, but it's smooth and close enough. It's amazing.
