It was a dark period for him with his divorce being a catalyst in the breakup of Genesis, and the loss of his wife (to divorce), whom he loved dearly. The song was recorded on his first album “Face Value” which contained other songs surrounding his divorce and his first wife.
Phil Collin’s first divorced wife lived around the corner to me growing up and knew my mum. Must have been a real killer the road she lived in as her house was opposite my best mates house. His dad was the image of Phil Collins 😂
He wrote this for a friend who drowned in a lake he stopped some pedestrians to help and they didn't he gave them tickets and premiered this song and the killed themselves
If the story about a young Phil Collins can be applied as to why I love this song so much is from several years ago at my childhood church, I witnessed a young man several pews away from me having a seizure. Unfortunately, it was in the middle of a Mass and of course no one did anything about it. Even the priest wasn't much of a help acting as if nothing had happened even after Mass. After Mass finished, I ran up to the young man and asked him if was okay. He said yes and the church choir looked at me as if I was a threat to the parish's well-being. The lead singer looked at me as if she wanted to call the cops on me, despite her operatic voice matching her Queen B persona.
The young man and I waited a year to switch parishes. We planned very carefully and we switched parishes much to the dismay of his mom. The young man and I have been buddies ever since and whenever he listens to this song, he imagines himself seeking revenge on all who made fun of him and his mom after that day. The priest of our former parish himself went through a medical crisis back in 2020, so we have forgiven him. Whenever the young man's mom sees us together, she has made threats against me with a pair of prominence being filing restraining orders against me or putting me in a mental hospital. The young man has crappy social skills because of how controlling his mom is, so I assure her that I am helping him, not hurting him.
I am brought here tonight because it popped into my head. I am incredibly depressed right now and i am trying to pull myself out of the worst state I have been in, in a incredibly long time. I never thought id be this bad again an I am. I need to get out of this darkness again. I need to remind myself that the darkness doesn't have to be my home anymore
