  • When President Reagan joked about outlawing Russia and launching bomb strikes, he probably didn't expect to put the Soviet system on war alert.

      But it's easy to joke about it now and in the positions we're in. When you're a leader on the international stage during the Cold War...everyone is watching and everyone is thinking and overthinking about your actions. That said, it's weird to believe that a country can mobilize forces in 5 minutes when there was no sign of massive military movements even days before.

      @@Wicked-hx7yg Not just war, the end of the world. Narcissism and therefore totalitarianism rule the planet, so it could very well have been our last day. Thing is, both China, North Korea, America, and Russia has enough nuclear weapons each to destroy the planet 10 times over. They have so much power by now, that they don't even realize it anymore. Just one wrong interpretation, and the globe could be gone. Scary yet quite fascinating stuff imo.

      Yellow hat
      North Korea is a tricky one, i saw a documentary of people talking about a bloody nose approach. But they argued that it isn’t effective since the enemy doesn’t know what you doing. They might think it’s all out war and send nukes.

      @@Wicked-hx7yg Exactly, they have no idea as of to just how much power they hold. Its a debunked myth( plus given that nuclear arsenals had shrunk 4 times from 80s)
      Biosphere would ve become pretty unhealthy, and hundreds of millions of people were lost, though. Still not enough for some catastrophic planet apocalypse.

    Reagan was so awesome! He took on Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko. None could keep up with Reagan in the Cold War. It finally led to Reagan and Gorbachev ending the Cold War. American Hero! World Hero!

    • @joejohnston5872
      @joejohnston5872 8 лет назад +10

      Stefan, I'm not sure if you were old enough during those years to understand what was going on at the personal level. I was. The nuclear clock kept inching closer to WW3. It was a game of spending and a game of chicken. Brezhnev, Andropov, and Chernenko's healths failed, because they were very worried with the prospect of WW3. At the personal level, their fear of WW3 perpetrated by Reagan made them sick. Reagan came up with SDI (Star Wars) knowing fully that it may not get completed or function. He basically turned it into a game of chicken. He was not afraid to raise the game of chicken to the highest level. Brezhnev, Andropov, and Chernenko were too afraid to even communicate directly with Reagan. Gorbachev began communicating with Reagan and realized that not only can WW3 be averted, that Reagan was willing to provide an exit strategy for USSR that would save Gorbachev's face (to some extent). The Eastern bloc defeating themselves is a myth. If you lived in the 70's and 80's, you would understand the constant fear of nuclear warfare that peaked in the early 80's. You won't understand this today from wikipedia or videos or newspaper/magazine articles. You had to live through it. We, in the US, were very afraid that the draft would return. Anyway, if you think the Eastern bloc fell on its own, you underestimate the immense effect Reagan had on everybody ... Republicans, Democrats, allies, and adversaries.

    • @joejohnston5872
      @joejohnston5872 8 лет назад +3

      +Stefan Genov Why do you think the Eastern bloc (communism) was failing? Because instead of spending on basic life necessities, Reagan forced USSR to spend massively on weapons of mass destruction, and to try and come up with some SDI system of their own. Reagan's strategy was to make USSR spend itself into the ground. As for the state of the world today, I don't think you can say there is any country that is doing great, including China. All countries are economically interdependent on each other. There will no longer ever be big winners in today's global economy world. That said, I still think the US and China have the strongest economies today. And you probably would never guess what race I am, based on you jumping to conclusions by bad mouthing the US.

      You are right if you didn't experience it you can't feel it.
      Imagine if the internet and social media existed back then.
      It would be so much more palpable.
      We got that feeling 2 times during this war in Ukraine if you followed it closely.
      But things calmed down pretty quickly.
      Both sides lowered the tones.
      It's like a dance where you accidentally step on the others feet , fix it on the next step but keep on the dance .
      But once in March when they got close to Kyiv and they couldn't take it there was a risk of escalation but they fell back
      Then on the build up on Donbass which quickly fizzled out.
      Cause Russia could escalate here but if they make that decision it means NATO USA has to respond.
      If escalation is big enough the response needs to be big enough.

    • @joeroganpodfantasy42
      @joeroganpodfantasy42 2 года назад +2

      @@joejohnston5872 I don't think USSR failed because of the spending.
      That was a small factor but USSR had bigger problems.
      By the way the system works during Reagan the successors were all of the same generation so they were swapping one dead man for the other. They didn't die of stress they died cause they were old and USSR life expectancy is lower.
      2 their economic system didn't work , China changed course but USSR kept their ideological dogma about economy
      Then you have the failed Afghanistan war. So it was many many things. Gorbachev was given a sinking burning ship he just managed to park it on the port with out crashing it. And everyone criticizes him for it when it was not his fault.

    Aww the good old days when presidents were not afraid to speak clearly and toss in a joke! Kinda reminds me of our best leader yet, good ol donald trump.

    Plot twist: It was a young KGB agent who saved the world from a Thermonuclear World War.... that young KGB agent's first name was Vladimir.

      Nope.....it was, in reality, a middle-aged+ officer in a bunker who had rank to launch but who refrained from acting like a machine...

    Cracks me up how he was such a successful troll of his critics that they're still butthurt about it -- over a throwaway line in a sound check that wasn't even meant for publication. Meaning that it only was published because his enemies in the media published it, then cried about it! Even 4 decades ago, Democrats in the media were looking for anything from a great Republican to overreact about.
