When I was a teen, I worked at the biggest toy store in the world. One day I was assigned to work the Barbie section. We were restocking the shelves. The policy was to put the black dolls at the bottom and to make sure the white dolls were at the child’s eye level. The other ethnic barbies went on the top. I can’t understand for the life of me why black people support this Brand. We are always doing that and when we had a chance to support Black we failed. Booooo
I also find issues with Barbie’s new inclusive agenda. I find it disrespectful to market together dark skin and 4c hair Barbie’s with body positive and disability dolls. Also bp aren’t necessarily supporting black by seeing black oriented Disney movies. At the end of the day sure a few black actors and crew got paid but it was a white corp that benefits the most. Also Disney has a horrible racist past and they are just trying to extract black dollars by any means necessary. Little Mermaid made about 600 million, and has still made more than Barbie. (Not for much longer,) and the little Mermaid was plagued by COVID and racist campaigns domestically and internationally, before anyone saw anything. If 20 percent of movie goers are Black people, and the movie made 600 million, it sounds like Black folks went, they just didn't go back over and over.

I think the Little Mermaid comparison to Barbie is flawed for a few reasons. Assuming that African Americans didn’t come out to the movie isn’t accurate. The demographics are not the same - little black girls and women who loved the original absolutely supported the movie. So did celebrities, schools, camps and many others in the age range. The Barbie movie had a larger range for support. Women (black and all ethnicities) played with Barbie’s since the 1960’s. Thereby increasing the market. The real reason for LM not doing as well was the overseas markets and the ratings trashing that were not as successful as the domestic box office. Once again, we’re looking for a way to criticize black (women mostly). It’s okay to support both films, which actually both had a focus on the beauty of diversity.
I understand about the two week notice. Yes, you want the job to give a good reference, but sometimes you do everything right and they still don't give you a good reference. As an HR professional, I can confidently say that Al is incorrect about the withholding of checks and vacation when two weeks notice is not given. In some states vacation leave is considered wages and it’s illegal to withhold it for any reason. Often organizations have to ensure the person receives their last check within a certain amount of time.
I’ve worked in leadership for several companies and witnessed people’s PTO buckets being wiped once they provided a notice. Guess it’s not uncommon in Texas and MO.

You are absolutely right and that's the reason why I supported The Little Mermaid during it's opening weekend. I was already planning to see that movie but that weekend I almost stayed home because I prefer not to go to certain movies when I know it's going to be busy in the first weekend. I usually wait until the crowds thin out. But I told to myself nope, get on up and go that first weekend because I knew that the numbers and dollars were very important. I knew if the turn out that weekend had been extremely low then the haters and racists would have been happy. Plus, certain ppl in the movie industry would have felt validated not producing movies like that with one of us in the lead. So that's exactly why I, ((a grown ass man with no kids of my own)) took myself to see The Little Mermaid during it's first weekend.

I think with the Barbie movie vs the little mermaid a huge factor was the fact that the Barbie movie was original vs the little mermaid. In this era of remakes and adaptations people are more excited for original scripts.

None of what Al said is applicable in California with regard to two weeks notice… they have to pay everything owed or earned and for a reference, former employers are only able to verify employment dates. They can’t speak to performance.

I’m with Que on the two weeks notice. I was recently fired while my husband was in surgery because I refused to come in after giving them a notice in advance. I wanted to quit anyway because when I requested the day off my manager had an attitude as if me wanting to be present for his surgery was such an inconvenience. When I got the “you’re fired” text, I just responded with a thank you because I’m glad to not work with such an evil person.

As an HR professional, I can confidently say that Al is incorrect about the withholding of checks and vacation when two weeks notice is not given. In some states vacation leave is considered wages and it’s illegal to withhold it for any reason. Often organizations have to ensure the person receives their last check within a certain amount of time.

I usually wait until the crowds thin out. But I told to myself nope, get on up and go that first weekend because I knew that the numbers and dollars were very important. I knew if the turn out that weekend had been extremely low then the haters and racists would have been happy. Plus, certain ppl in the movie industry would have felt validated not producing movies like that with one of us in the lead.
