(God I’m going to sound like such a nerd) The spice doesn’t really allow the navigators to fold space (that is done by the Holtzman Drive), what it does do is when ingested in large, life altering amounts, grants the user some limited prescience, allowing the Navigators to navigate super luminous speeds. There’s also little evidence that the Spice extends life indefinitely, it just extends life by a lot, with the side effect of being obligate addicted to it. Bonus: a third factor is that the Spice is key to the Bene Gesserits power. The consumption of the Life Water to enter the Spice Agony, which allows them to unlock their maternal genetic memories. So there is that.
Check, check and check. The water of life made from drowning a baby Maker is what’s used to help budding Bene Genneserit undergo the Spice Agony. Spice also helped The Tyrant live for some 2500 years, and plenty of Bene Gesserit on Chapterhouse.
You will remember then also that other poisons could be used to enter the Agony, but once you've endured the Spice Agony no other poison is usable by you again.

I want to try these as they sound great and also have a nice novelty to them. Some one probably already said this but it's a misconception that has spread and has almost become the more right answer even though it's not. - Spice doesn't let the navigators fold space, it lets them guide the ship through fold space. You can fold travel without a navigator but the loss rates were huge cause you'll hit a planet (prequel book House Atredies goes into it) - Also the David Lynch Dune iirc started the whole glowing eyes thing. canonically the whites were blue and the iris a deep blue but they didn't glow, can't beat the look of the effect so i'm not too upset when i see it.... I’m sure someone else has pointed this out already, but it takes place in the year 10,191 A.G. After guild. Not CE or AD. Frank Herbert said the first book takes place something like 20,000 years into the future.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. When I was in Iraq and Afghanistan I used this to keep calm and corpsman on. If you stay calm and think you can think your way through anything. If I felt fear starting up I would just repeat: Only I remain. And it always calmed my mind.
Wasn’t expecting a Dune-centric...well, anything. But very glad this is happening. Dune is my favorite book of all time. Good to hear someone else nerding out on it.
"Walk without rhythm, it won't attract the worm Walk without rhythm, and it won't attract the worm Walk without rhythm, and it won't attract the worm if you walk without rhythm, huh, you'll never learn"
2:56 It doesn’t grant immortality, just long life. Dune actually is relatively transhumanist, and heavy genetic engineering in the setting has put humans in that period, while still recognizably human, as far beyond Homo sapiens sapiens as we are beyond Homo Erectus. Just a note. Also Melange isn’t what allows for the folding of space, that’s the Holtzmann drive. The Melange actually grants limited precognition as one becomes more addicted to it, the navigators use that to look at local conditions in the target area and make sure that they land where they want to and that the trip is free of hazards. Space folding is purely tech though. Worth noting they could do spacefolding before the discovery of melange (that’s how they found Arrakis in the first place), but it was dependent on AI, which was banned following the Butlerian Jihad. Without either, spacefolding is incredibly dangerous.

You made me watch this movie again. I hope you're proud of yourself.
And thanks it was just as good the whatever time this was as the first.
“And how can this be? For he IS the Kwisatz Haderach!”
If this video doesn't mention a Kwisatz Sazerac, I'm going to be very displeased.
I want to try these as they sound great and also have a nice novelty to them.
Some one probably already said this but it's a misconception that has spread and has almost become the more right answer even though it's not.
- Spice doesn't let the navigators fold space, it lets them guide the ship through fold space. You can fold travel without a navigator but the loss rates were huge cause you'll hit a planet (prequel book House Atredies goes into it)
- Also the David Lynch Dune iirc started the whole glowing eyes thing. canonically the whites were blue and the iris a deep blue but they didn't glow, can't beat the look of the effect so i'm not too upset when i see it....
I've gone by Sandworm for almost 20 years online, pretty passionate about Dune and super happy for the homage, you did a great job on them!
Yes i'm that guy that can recite the litany of fear from memory on the spot......
As to games, Emperor battle for dune was a pretty fun RTS from a WHILE ago
That intro is really great.
The Spice must flow
Thank you for the Spice and the ♥️
THANK YOU!
Raise a mug of cold spice beer to Max Von Sydow, 90 years who passed into other memory yesterday. I will miss his distinctive voice.
Silver Bane bless the maker and his water, bless the coming and going of him, may he cleanse the world, and keep the world for his people.
Can't talk "Dune" names without bringing up "Duncan Idaho". There's a potato cake joke in there somewhere...
Fun fact: "Idaho" is a completely fictitious name without any etymological ancestry. The guy who invented it was petitioning the US Congress to turn this territory into a state, and came up with the name because it seemed catchy.
fun facts! I bet he stood there thinking... “I dunno, I dunno... what’s a good name... I dunno... Idaho? Woah! IDAHO!”
If he added vodka (fermented from potatoes) to that first drink he could've called it a Duncan Idaho
Tripping Thru--Unless, of course, "Idaho" was a misspelling of the ghetto term, "I da 'ho!"
I won't lie, I've been more enthused about your classic cocktail tutorials than your geeky cocktail creations, but I am so ready for this episode. I love Dune, I love cocktails, and I love all that you do, Greg. I have every confidence that when I taste this drink, the sleeper will awaken.
Alright, he NEEDS to make Fenrisian Ale from 40k
He's even said that he used to play Space Wolves, like how can he not make it
*Fenrisian mjöd
I'd be up for this, except for the fact that mjød has a nasty tendency to kill non-Astartes, and I'd rather like Greg to keep making shows.
@@mattkuhn6634 we just watched him down Spice. Pretty sure he'll live.
Im fairly certain that Fenrisian Mjod would involve mixing everclear with honey . A super strong honey liquor maybe?
@@darthrex354 IIRC mjød is made with a specific type of poisonous root that blocks the functioning of the oolitic kidney. Since we know Greg loves his absinthe, even though there's no real wormwood in there, I'd say finding a way to work absinthe into a strong honey wine would be a good call.
That Eyes of Ibad effect was a really nice touch!
I’m sure someone else has pointed this out already, but it takes place in the year 10,191 A.G.
After guild. Not CE or AD. Frank Herbert said the first book takes place something like 20,000 years into the future.
YES!!! Perfect Opening monologue!! Can’t wait to watch this after work!
Guy from Maine here, thanks for the shout out to Moxie, our favorite Maine state drink. You should try Moxie cocktails, like the New Englander, or the Moxie-contin. Our local pub, The Great Lost Bear, has a drink called a Burnt Trailer.
Been there and have to agree that the Burnt Trailer is fantastic. Sincerely, a Moxie diehard from Connecticut.
You dork. I loved that open so much. Thanks for making me smile. Edit to add: The tasting notes section always makes me laugh out loud.
It’s admirable how unapologetically a nerd you are and how it genuinely comes through in your creativity process. This sounds absolutely amazing
I am stoked that you did something from one of the best SF series ever! Nerd moment: Spice is in EVERYTHING in the Dune universe. There's the Water of Life Bene Gesserit use, and Sapho juice mentats use... I'll stop now. Excellent video!
I had a co worker once with a tshirt, and on it was the entire "fear is the enemy" speech, except substitute "Decaff is the enemy" through the whole thing. Its an epic piece for coffee fans.
💙💙💙! I have "I MUST NOT FEAR" on my left arm! Dune is one of my favourite books!
I love the fact that Dune is read by generations...I read it in my teens in the 70s and I'm not the only fan commenting. Also big thumbs up for Glen and Friends reference!
Immediately, from the opening, I knew I was going to love this episode. I was not disappointed. EDIT: casual reference to chaumurky put it over the top.
Ditto. This guy keeps getting better and better. Let’s hope he doesn’t sign with Netflix or HGTV and ruin the momentum.
This is the best comment section ever. I am so happy right now. I knew there were more Dune nerds out there I just didn't realize how many!
Somebody came up with a version of the approved technique for sanitary hand-washing that uses the Litany against Fear instead of "Happy Birthday".
This is great. I used to randomly use, “The spice must flow,” as a response to friends and no one ever got the reference.
Well, you just succeeded in getting me to watch Dune for the first time, with the whole Alan Watts bit.
Read it too/first/instead/too!!!!!
Dear sweet lord I love how much of a geek you are. D&D, Dune and about encyclopedic knowledge of drinks.
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

God I love dis man, that opening. I don’t even drink very much, I come here for you and you alone.
New movie is awesome if anyone is curious, highly recommended.
So many chills up my spine (from your intro). You are now Greg Muad'Dib.
"Walk without rhythm, it won't attract the worm
Walk without rhythm, and it won't attract the worm
Walk without rhythm, and it won't attract the worm
if you walk without rhythm, huh, you'll never learn"
Dude it’s insane how much work you put into these videos. The slow-mo bits alone can’t be easy
You are doing the God-Emperor's work.
I did not say this. I was not here.
WE HAVE JUST FOLDED SPACE FROM IX
@ŇøHă Ģ. Well 40k pretty much owes its entire existence to Dune so it's a chicken and the egg thing.
I've never seen Dune and have no interest. But your unabashed passion for so many different things is what makes this show so great.
Without either, spacefolding is incredibly dangerous.
i've made this a few times now, and i'd fully recommend adding in a star anise pod to the whole steeping process. it adds a very interesting flavor that isn't really licorice-y, and it's very good.
I totally approve of this opening. And god DAMNIT everyone else already beat me to the fantastic puns.
13:05 Fergie Frederiksen was the lead singer of Toto during the recording of the Dune soundtrack. Joseph Williams didn't come along until 1986.
That opening, LOL!!!
"GREG IS THE KWISATZ HADERACH!!!!" 😬😨😱
Thank you so much for doing the original opening. I get goosebumps every time I hear it
Dune 2 is the best RTS of all time. Change my mind.
I should get a copy of this
@@howtodrink The best of Dune games by far, which isn't saying much on its own, but revolutionary at the time. Try to play it at least, when you have some spare time.
You said it man.!! Best game for my money I can play that all the time. If I could find it on Xbox somehow I'd pay good money
@@howtodrink If you haven't played the game...oh man. I think you're the kind of person that would really enjoy it. Thanks for this. My buddies and myself are already getting ready to make this and watch the movie.
That intro was the best thing in my week so far! May it's passing cleanse the world. Maybe add some LSD for realism.
As a non-drinker (who none-the-less likes watching these get made), I thank you for more non-alcoholic drinks to try out. Cinnamon soda, hm...
Just finished the book a couple days ago. Very nice touch with the blue eyes.
According to Herbert the Fremen weren't inspired by the Bedouin but by the people living in the Danakil Desert in Ethiopia and Eritrea
Is the thujone in wormwood safe?
@@Finn-xw4vn Yes. Even by the insanely conservative standards of the FDA unless you are gobbling down the distillate
The spice must flow, my friend! Hope you have a chance to catch it in theatres!
Duque Leto would be proud of you. I'm sure that coffee was the same they drank in their last breakfast in Caladan before moving to Arrakis.
So glad you are making more drinks from books, and here is hoping you make the Ginger Scald from 'The Lies of Locke Lamora'. I can't stop imagining how you would present THAT particular book and drink. They are right on your alley.
Hope to see the spice sirup in more drinks.
You should try adding some magic mushrooms. Was the inspiration for conscious expanding part and the blue eyes.
THANK YOU!!! I'm a huge Dunehead, love the Sci Fi mini siries much more than David Lynch's monstrosity, am praying my nerd heart out that since Jason Momoa is Duncan Idaho in this new movie it's going to kick ass! Bi La Kaifa!
Idk about Jason (never really seen any of his movies) but the fact that it's made by denis villeneuve gives me great faith, he's a scifi master
@@flatplant Jason = Badass. So the fact that a character as central and as badass as Duncan is to the series as a whole, is being played by him (also being from my hometown area), makes me excited, lol!

I love that you use Mr Black, it's an awesome Australian product. It is also phenomenal over a nice vanilla ice cream
"I'm not even sorry" LMAO I love it!
If I didn't love your videos before, this has sold it for me. I mean, you're already awesome, but you finally did my FAVORITE series EVER.
Dune is also one of the Absolute Primary inspirations for Warhammer 40k, got God Emperors & Navigators & Mutants & High Sci-Fi & Rule By Theology & Space Marines & all Good shit which they nabbed from Dune.
Dune's impact upon like... Nerd Culture is Massive.
Yet the Warp bears more resemblance to the Hell dimension from Event Horizon. Also, not sure exactly who made Space Marines first, but it is common in sci-fi as larger spacecraft always seem to pilot like seafaring vessels (even the stormtroopers are technically classified as space marines).
Dune is to science fiction and large scale worldbuilding as Lord of the Rings is to the fantasy genre.
The Dune series was Frank Herbert's "re-imagining" of the John Carter of Mars series.
Deserts, a mix of old and advanced technology, magic and science, with a prophecy in play.
Sword play and blasters on the same battlefield.
Dune and Star Wars are inspired by it
The Matrix and Inception copy the time John Carter is trapped in a virtual world.
Transporters that ancient aliens used to visit Earth. (Sound familiar?)
A visitor from another planet with stronger gravity having vastly superior strength and reflexes (Sorry Superman , John Carter did it first.)
Say what you may about may about Edgar's writing style , the man did something very rare in literature....original plots and ideas that inspired writers for the next 100 years.
have they done a warhammer 40k episode?
Come on man Dune did not invent theocracy, mutants, space Marines. They have been around for decades if not centuries before.
I just started doing audiobooks and I must say, you read that opening really well.
I was a friend of Liet Kynes

Been gone for a while. This video makes me SO glad to be back.
I felt so left out during the intro. Like an inside joke I wasn’t let in on. I mean that’s almost always the case. Greg’s geekiness is beyond me lol
Yaya Lu the intro made me think about the spice melange from south parj
How did Greg know that while I have been subscribed for quite a while, I just now got into Dune? This is literally the best of both worlds right now!
Jodorowsky glass?
Lynch glass?
OR.
Villeneuve glass!
Villeneuve, honestly.
Lynch glass.
For my spice coffee blend I use 2 parts ground Grains of Paradise, 1 part ground Long Pepper, 1 part ground Cinnamon, and 1 part ground coriander seed, and use it to make Turkish Coffee. Before I pour the cup I put a tiny drop of orange blossom water.
Fear was the mind-killer...then I started making Greg's drinks on the regular ;)
