- Govatsa Dwadashi is a Hindu festival celebrated on the twelfth day (Dwadashi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) in the month of Kartik. This festival holds great significance, especially in Maharashtra and parts of North India, as it is dedicated to worshipping cows and their calves.
The word "Govatsa" combines "Go," meaning cow, and "Vatsa," meaning calf. Devotees, particularly women, observe this day by fasting and performing rituals to honor the nurturing and sacred bond between mother and child, symbolized by the cow and her calf. Cows are considered holy in Hinduism and are revered as symbols of abundance, kindness, and motherly love.
On Govatsa Dwadashi, devotees decorate and worship cows, offering them special food as a sign of gratitude for their contributions to human life, such as milk and agricultural support. Observing this day is believed to bring prosperity, good health, and blessings for children, as well as overall familial harmony and well-being.
