As it turns out, the fact that Ranger's class features often suck doesn't exactly help the fact their exclusive spells are even worse. Like, let's just talk capstone features (even if most of us will never get to see them, but I'm making a point). Druids get to wildshape at will, and can choose to just not care about Verbal, Somatic and most Material spell components, including while wildshaped. Wizards get one daily free use of one of their 3rd and 4th level spells. Rogues get to go "Nuh-uuuuuuuuuh" and Nat20 on a roll once per short rest at no cost. Artificers get +6 to all saving throws and the ability to cheat death six times a day. Barbarians get +4 to their Strength and Constitution score *and* maximum... And Rangers get to add their _Wisdom_ modifier to one attack _or_ damage rolls against three creature types. Their _Wisdom_ modifier. Yeah. P.S this is more me ranting about how WOTC didn't exactly design Ranger well, bashing on them rather than the class. My group's ranger is awesome... In spite of WOTC's design decisions and because our DM helped rebalance some shit. He didn't have to do that with any of the other base game classes and the only other class he had to do that on was a homebrew class one of my fellow players (who eventually got kicked for various reasons including borderline main character syndrome) brought that was way too fucking strong.
Hex is good in some cases tbf. Scorching Blast / Triple Agonizing Blast + Hex racks up some nice damage pretty consistently. Since Hunter's Mark is concentration, you can't even combine it with Swift Quiver. Hell, if you're a sorcelock, you can do all do Agonizing Blast as an action, Scorching Blast as a bonus action and (assuming you cast Hex prior) deal like 5d6 for a 1st-level slot.
Ranger in Pathfinder is really good tbh. You basically mark one dude nonmagically (PF2E Ranger is not a spellcaster btw) and can choose to be really accurate against them, deal extra damage once per turn or gain a bonus to AC and skill checks against them. They're basically hunter / tracker assassins.
