"Frailer than the hours, these precious hours" is a beautiful line written by a civil war poet. Dylan knows exactly what to do with it, he's always had the ability to perfectly utilize the work of the poets who came before him. It's a skill in itself, really. In school they call that "plagiarism," but it's part of the folk tradition.
Checkout the story around Call Letter Blues, its a great dylan song but has roots that go a long way back, brilliant stuff works that way.

The music itself is pretty much Bing Crosby's "Where the Blue of the Night (Meets the Gold of the Day)" But it matters not. This song has me crying behind my sunglasses as I walk around the hills thinking of my life.

I have this song in my IPOD and it started playing when I was driving back from California to Texas when I was getting out for good from the Marine Corps and I tell you this song made me shed silent tears and reflect on the four years I served. Too bad she wasn't there when the deal went down.

Why does this song bring me feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality? Sometimes when listening to Bob I feel things I didn't know I could feel. It's really difficult to describe.

When the Deal Goes Down is Ringo Starr's favorite Bob Dylan tune.
I tried an interesting experiment; I played Dylan's version and the Tom Jones version at the same time. There is a necessary periodic stop & start to keep the lyrics together, but the music is in the same key which nicely adds the haunting quality of the Jones track to the duet.
It won't go down twice that's for sure

Damn it's crushing, the contrast between the hope, strength, freshness and beauty of youth and the wisdom and staleness of experience, age and death. Therein lies the greatness of Dylan's composition and his director's pictures.

"More frailer than the flowers, these precious hours" has always been my favorite line of this song. Just the way Dylan sings it gives me chills and a tear in my eye. Words so true.
Rorschalx Dylan will always create a mood with the poetry, the music and vocal style dependent on each other that is just indescribable and certainly gifted as a package.
me too, on that line, some of the diction in these songs an homage to civil war poet Henry Timrod. Gorgeous.

I had never heard this song before until mentioned in a facebook post by a friend who lost his son to sanflippo syndrome, he was only 12. The song is beautiful, and although I have never really been a fan of Bob Dylan's music, I appreciate the way this man brought me to tears thinking of my friend and his son. Hold your loved ones a little closer. Love hard, because nothing is promised forever. Spread light, not dark. Love, not hate.

I'm reminded of some of the classics from the 80's/90's, like Gus van Sant's, Drugstore Cowboy, the video on this is second to none, Bob's voice and Scarlett's images are excellent here, it has such a nostalgic feeling to it, beauty, and innocence.
