What's awesome about the characters is that with the system mechanics, characters can easily switch up their playstyles on the fly. For example I love King's zoning tools, but with run and hops, I can play her aggressively and use her tools in new ways. Or take Kyo as another easy example. He's definitely rushdown, but with rolls and the ability to cancel rekkas whenever you want, you can easily play him as a bait and punish character. I've played fighting games for a long time, and DBFZ was the first game I really tried to get serious in, but eventually the same-iness got to me, and I can't enjoy it as much. Getting into KOF has been fun because it has that breakneck pace but also that classic fighting game feel of expansive options. Looking forward to 15! Thanks for the content Roof.
The movement mechanics make this game. You got normal jumps, super jumps, short hops, super short hops, foreward and backrolls, alpha counters that crumple; its pretty loaded
Terry really benefits more than most from the ex move changes. He’s typically been terrible at mixups (a deliberate decision) because he’s never had anything to make you wanna stop crouch blocking sans an obvious jump in so ex crack shoot really does a lot for him. Combined with his other great ex’s and it’s nice to see Terry in high tier again after years.
"Helloooo aand welcome!" When I first started watching your channel: "God why do I find that so annoying" After months and years of enjoying learning from your content: "What a comforting and familiar intro to a learning session~"
I love how the universal buff to hit confirming in this game. XIV had a lot of characters that lacked Cmd normal true combos and thus took a lot of effort to learn how to be safe with
There are still so many KOF characters that I want to try out so I really appreciate something like this! You’ve got a real knack for getting across what makes characters fun to play, while still keeping their weaknesses in mind
Man. Just finished the video beginning to end, and I can't thank you enough for this. Such an invaluable resource for a newcomer like me, I hope you know all that effort was without a doubt worth it.
Terry's been on every single KOF team that i've mained since 1994 and that's not changing anytime soon, he's been my favorite character since forever, going back to the Fatal Fury series. I'm thinking i'll use K' and Yashiro well. I'll probably drop one of them when Gato is released tho. Great video man!
How I choose my main in KoF games: Is King in the game? Yes? Ok, found my main. You mostly cover her zoning, but I've always used her as rushdown who just happens to have great zoning when I need to mix it up. Glad to see her overhead back. Either way, awesome video! I'm so stoked for XV
This was a great video roofle! Lots of useful information not only if you want to play the characters but to know what their game plan is about when playing against them.
I’ve never played KoF besides a little bit of 2002 UM and XIV but this time im really into it and the characters imma play is Vanessa, Luong, and Ángel because they either have stances or they’re hard as hell which means you need to put work in which I enjoy doing in video games technical characters are my favorite types
Thanks for this! I’ve never played a KOF before so this will be a good time killer for the rest of my shift tonight. I already know it’s going to be good content so thanks again! :)
@@starbreaker6441 I’m going to have to continue another night!!! Had too much stuff going on at work. The crew kept interrupting me. Lol I was liking the dinosaur dude surprisingly 😂😂. When I watch the rest I’ll let you know. Edit: I’m definitely going to try Angel also along with Mr. Dino. I played Orchid in KI, Noel in Blazblue so I’m used to playing characters that have follow up attacks. If my friend gets the game I’ll definitely troll with the sleepy dude, and say dumb shit like, “Yawwwwn this match is putting me to sleep.” Lol We already have an inside joke about acting like we’re tired so it’ll be perfect. 😂😂😂
Meitenkun seems so fun. I'm not usually the one to pick a charge character, even if I do like most charge characters, but I will do it for this adorable little sleepyhead.
Thank you for including signature moves for each character. Helps me learn what to watch out for when facing characters on top of helping me pick my main at the same time.
Been waiting for dis. And also waiting for my Deluxe Koch edition to arrive. I really hope this one goes the distance, cause KOFXV looks mega great. For anyone even remotely interested, my main will undoubtedly be Mai, complemented most likely by Gatou (when the DLC drops) or Terry, and rounded out by Kyo (he felt good during the Beta), or maybe Iori (felt less natural for me than Kyo, but I understood his game-plan. Characters I'm super interested in trying out to see if they feel natural are Elisabeth, Yuri, K' (although in the beta he felt a little complicated) Joe and Angel (even though I know she's notriously one of the most complex characters in all of fighting games). That's the great thing about KOF - there's so many fantastic characters - so this list is mega helpful. Thanks so much for your great efforts, Roofle.
Dude it’s official, you’re my favorite fighting game content creator, I can feel the love from every vid you put out. Keep it up and go out and play some KoF my guy 👍🏾. Hope my Angel, Vanessa, Clark team finds you online on Monday!
Watching the full video because I just wanna see a whole load of KoF tbh, currently up to Ash and whilst i've never cared too much for him either way - I gotta say wow, his animations look super good.
I'm notoriously terrible at fighting games. I had SF 2 on Sega Genesis back in the day but that was it. I haven't played a fighting game since. However I kinda want to get into KOF 15. The character designs and bright colors really entice me. Lol thanks for the guide. I will definitely take notes and pick my mains carefully LOL
Oh man this was extremely thorough, thank you SO much for this entire guide! Glad to see some of my preferred characters getting new tricks to use in this game~
IM SUPER EXCITED. And honestly by looks Mai Shiranui and Luong are the ones I want to main. And try out Terry. And so far they seems just the perfect fit in playstyle!
What I really like about KOF is that even if a character is a certain archetype the playstyle will allow a certain level of flexibility so you don't have to be on a one track mind with how to play
I've never really played a KOF game before, I've always been more into stuff like guilty gear, street fighter, smash, etc, but I am REALLY tempted to just go ahead and give it a try. The characters I'm most interested in rn are Meitenkun, Isla, Dolores, and Rock Howard whenever he comes out! I tend to main a lot of different playstyles across different games so really I just focus on picking someone who looks cool and labbing the fuck outta them LOL
Definitely considering putting in the time to learn Angel but this video made me consider so many other characters. Can't wait to try them. Thank you for this!
Preordered the deluxe edition despite this being my first KOF because the betas were really hype. Kyo, Shermie, and Iori had some really fun gameplay, but I can tell this is gonna be one of those fighting games where I wanna play nearly the whole roster. I feel like I'll definitely gravitate towards Luong, Iori, and someone else for sure. So many characters ooze personality in this franchise (which ultimately led to me having a soft spot for it), and I'm extremely glad it translated well into this game as well!
@@DCDsauce I agree! I’d say the only character I wasn’t interested in was Billy bc I’ve never really liked him. I REALLY hope Rugal gets revealed though
I've decided to jump in and try KOFXV which will be my very first KOF game, and decided to watch this guide and dang this is one amazing guide! I already have a list of characters to try and choose from :D Will be definitely easier than looking at the roster with no clue :v I used to watch tons of your guides from DBFZ like character guides mechanic guides and combos, but damn this is something else. Amazing work!
As a SF player (Gief/Honda), I'm looking for a character that revolves around making good reads and punishing reckless approach. Good AA essential. Grapplers most welcome. Dino looking pretty nice to me so far.
If they didn't change it from KOF XIV, Dino also has a fairly nice footsie tool in that his standing B ankle kick will combo to his hcb+A command throw if done at all but max range. The kick is safe on block (slightly minus IIRC) and projects Dino's axis forward a little, which pulls him into command throw range if you special-cancel it. So if you've been successfully picking at people's limbs with his standing B, you might want to commit to the special cancel to get some easy extra damage+knockdown. it's obviously unsafe on block (cmd throw whiffs), but the kick is fast enough that it's a great whiff punish on many missed C/D moves, so it's easy to just react and clip someone's limb with an st.B.
If grapplers are your thing, you have Dinosaur, Maxima, Shermie and Clark to choose from. Clark in particular is a very strong grappler with good mobility.
I'm still kind of on the fence about getting this game. But I definitely have a lot more respect for how cool a lot of these characters are. Really Cool spins on archetypes. Tons of options. Cool ex effects. Good job KoF. I didn't know that.
@@benearthside haha I'm getting married at the end of next week and as soon as we get back Elden Ring comes out which will require my free times full attention. But I do hope it sells well and does well. I'm pretty interested in rock and geese Howard tbh so maybe I'll circle back to it later.
@@Trigun_Bebop Oh wow, congratulations! Best of luck, dude. That sounds responsible-I don't think I'd trust myself not to get sucked into a new KOF game in your situation :P

Dude, this video is awesome, truly appreciate the time and effort you put in, it's bananas.
Yes! Roofle, you da man! This is the video I wanted to see before KOF launches. Thank you! You are still my favorite FGC content creator. This is also going to be my first KOF ever. So many cool characters to choose from.
the one thing i wish this video had, is seeing your inputs. sure, im seeing the character tools, but i heavily value the "input flow" that im going to be doing a lot as each character.
something i love about these videos is i can get a completely new insight on certain games. never really was interested in kof beyond the art and 2d sprites but man you really just showed me how unique and in depth this series can be. Probably gonna be a purchase soon
I'd have made it 4k if I could, except youtube gets real angry when you do 4k vids longer than 5 minutes and takes legitimately over 10 times longer to process
Already know my team is gonna be Krohnen/Rock Howard/Darli Dagger. I'm a complete KoF noob that casually played 14 and my team will entirely be comprised of who I think is cool regardless of how they play lol (still watching this whole thing tho)
Great video. Much needed info for someone looking to branch out onto something new, competitively. I found that I jive with 4 or 5 of these characters. You saved me so much time.
My team will be 1 zoner, 1 grappler, and 1 all rounder / rush down. So probably a mixed of Terry, Ryo, Chris, Shermie, Yashiro, Meitenkun, and Blue Mary. Btw great video 👍👍
Just wanted to say thank you for this video showing off the characters. You provided a lot of valuable information and this has already helped me find characters I want to play. As well as giving me an idea of how each of them might play. Cheers.
SO excited to finally get down on this game. Every time I try to get into snk I find I have no opponents online. I know you can go find people in discords and stuff but even there it's hard sometimes. When Samurai Showdown got its reboot game I played until there was no one left and loved it. Excited to burn bright with you all in this game.
i'm very happy to hear from you that whip can at least hang with the rest of the cast this time :') she seems to have gotten a LOT of quality of life adjustments so she can play KOF a bit better so i'm very very excited to have her on my team! thanks for the video, gives me an inkling of who else i might want to mess with in a few days!
One thing not many people know, is that KoF XV's combo decay is very lenient, when compared to most games. Each hit only reduced the damage of the next attack by 5%, stacking (adding) with each consecutive hit. This means that, even though most combos may seem short in this game, their damage is very rewarding and supers will still do considerable damage even at the end of corner/juggle combos.
tbh I always choose characters that I like because of...well...it's character. I honestly don't care what it's mechanics are, if I like the character I will put extra effort to learn it no matter what.
Time stamps, HA! I watched this whole video bro lol. I got mine on pre-order and I’m so, EXCITED! One of my favorite games. It’s easy to see if you skim thru my social medias (no one reading this has to follow me, not a cheesy plug) I wear the fatal fury hat every where I go. This series and street fighter will always share my number 1 spot for favorite games because they are what made me want to be a martial artist in real life
This was a fantastic video, I've pre-ordered the game for xbox since I have missed having a good fighter since we seem to not get SF anymore, I'm not great and tend to go for design then kit for my characters but KoF seems to have all the cool dudes and waifus with the move sets I would enjoy playing. Your video was a great overview to the team I might pick. Can't wait to try honestly learning some decent combos even as I get filtered down to the casual/newbie areas of the online.
I also pre-ordered for Xbox, hope we find a large amount of people to go against. As long as I continue to find people I'll be more motivated to get better.
As for solo fighting, Chris definitely stuck with me as my main during the Beta. Didn't really find a useful character during the 2nd beta but looking at a few choices for teams once it releases
I love this video is just here to be this conversation: "So kof has a lot of characters." Rooflemonger: "Yes" "Which character has command grabs." Rooflemonger: " Yes."
honestly, as someone whos been trying to get into fighting games recently charge characters have never really clicked with me, I think I'm gonna try and learn how so I can play Leona, all her moves look so cool and her design and personality are so good
You should try to test Leona, she's actually one of the best beginner-friendly charge characters out there, it was with her that I learned how to play with them 😅
Thank you for putting so much work into videos like these Roofle, you're definitely my top source for fighting games. I love that you're so informative, but still entertaining without being overly exaggerated, and your passion for the games really shows. Roster overviews like these are nice, even if I'm not totally new to a franchise. This game especially has so many characters that I'm interested in, it helps give me a little better idea of who all to try out first.
0:59 Best character of all! My favorite character finally looks pretty strong in a KOF game after a long long time. I think he gets to be an A Rank character in KOF XV.
I kept seeing and reading that Leona is easy and you disagree, good thing! I'm a beginner to fighting and I started to learn Balrog on SFV to learn charge characters (which I hated for a long time) and had so much fun doing it and then learn Leona because I got my name thanks to her and I love her a lot (god those abs). So far I'm discovering how KOF works since it's my first one, but learning the game and Leona has been really fun and rewarding, I'm getting way more consistent on the charging and I love it!

As a Tsubaki main in BBCF, i looooooove me some overheads. >:)
Ye
You are actually such a workhorse, great job getting this done
"Helloooo aand welcome!"
When I first started watching your channel: "God why do I find that so annoying"
After months and years of enjoying learning from your content: "What a comforting and familiar intro to a learning session~"
Thanks friend, happy you enjoyed the vid
@@BlackMageLozi kinder "garden"
This being my 1st KOF I'm getting into is super helpful. Thank you very much!!!!
You are on timing with this one. I was looking for this all over the interwebs.
I'm brand new to KOF, and I just bought KOFXV for PS5. This is extremely useful. I'm so excited to learn. Thank you🙂!
K' is so interesting to play but he seems to get overlooked for whatever reason.
@@Cheezmonka Yea i've always been a big K' fan, he's definitely my favorite KOF protagonist for sure.
How I choose my main in KoF games:
Is King in the game?
I'll definitely be choosing Leona, Elisabeth, and Dolores for my team. Though I will keep my fingers crossed for Vice and Mature as DLC!
Welcome man, I hope you like it, KOF has some of the best character designs out there
Be sure to try out tons of characters regardless of what you *think* you might like. There's something for just about everyone in a game this diverse.
In the same boat tbh, I'm also terrible at fighting games but I'm really willing to learn this one and put time into it.
This video is a must watch for the newcomers into KOF. Pretty much covers all the essentials about the characters.
The joke about Andy's lifestyle is underrated, good shit as always Roofle!
What I really like about KOF is that even if a character is a certain archetype the playstyle will allow a certain level of flexibility so you don't have to be on a one track mind with how to play
great video and my man even picked rivals to demonstrate the characters, shout out for his effort in the details /o/
Can’t even imagine how much time you put into this entire video. Great work!
A lot, im very tired lol
I've never really played a KOF game before, I've always been more into stuff like guilty gear, street fighter, smash, etc, but I am REALLY tempted to just go ahead and give it a try. The characters I'm most interested in rn are Meitenkun, Isla, Dolores, and Rock Howard whenever he comes out! I tend to main a lot of different playstyles across different games so really I just focus on picking someone who looks cool and labbing the fuck outta them LOL
What timing! Just preordered it today and I thank you for this video
This game is what got me into fighting games.
DLC is also looking really good. Yamazaki, Geese, Gato. All really solid picks for me
@@DCDsauce I agree! I’d say the only character I wasn’t interested in was Billy bc I’ve never really liked him. I REALLY hope Rugal gets revealed though
@@UncleShlime Billy was meta last game, let's see how he performs in this one
@@UncleShlime well.......
Dino basically is your boy if thats what you are looking for.
Look into Clark
If grapplers are your thing, you have Dinosaur, Maxima, Shermie and Clark to choose from. Clark in particular is a very strong grappler with good mobility.
You can make some nice reads with maxima since some of his heavies have armour he also have a great command grab and a air grab
I'm still kind of on the fence about getting this game. But I definitely have a lot more respect for how cool a lot of these characters are. Really Cool spins on archetypes. Tons of options. Cool ex effects. Good job KoF. I didn't know that.
Give it a shot, man! You won't regret it ;)
@@benearthside haha I'm getting married at the end of next week and as soon as we get back Elden Ring comes out which will require my free times full attention.
@@Trigun_Bebop Ayyyyyyyyyyy congrats
@@Trigun_Bebop
You definitely will NOT have time If youre gonna play elden ring and youre getting married .
Dont even bother
Oh man, I cannot wait to see what people are gonna be pulling off in this game. Watched the entire thing and the potential some characters can do, even what it isn't apparent immediately, is gonna be absolutely sick. Dude, this video is awesome, truly appreciate the time and effort you put in, it's bananas.
You're the man, rooflemonger. These videos never disappoint. Thanks for all the hard work!
Loving this character intro guide. I also love that the footage is 1440p so it avoids youtube's terrible bitrate issues that 1080p has. Thanks, Roof!
I'd have made it 4k if I could, except youtube gets real angry when you do 4k vids longer than 5 minutes and takes legitimately over 10 times longer to process
@@rooflemonger Yeah, and on certain days it will just randomly decide to take way longer too. 1440p is a great middle ground.
Already know my team is gonna be Krohnen/Rock Howard/Darli Dagger. I'm a complete KoF noob that casually played 14 and my team will entirely be comprised of who I think is cool regardless of how they play lol (still watching this whole thing tho)
ayy was excitedly waiting for this! Canadian Maxima gang is here.
Great video. Much needed info for someone looking to branch out onto something new, competitively. I found that I jive with 4 or 5 of these characters. You saved me so much time.
Ik exactly who om playing but u always have such an entertaning way of explaining things
This video gonna solve a lot of reddit/forum posts that ask about what characters do. Gonna be recommending it from now on
Starting off with Whip, Krohnen, & Joe. Kyo & Luong look really cool as well. Looking forward to Yamazaki in Pack 2!
Cheers.
Well happy to help and thank you for the incredibly generous support!
@@rooflemonger You're very welcome.
Thank you for this video I'm just starting KoF and wondered what character is for me, and this is very helpful.
This game is so complex underneath the surface but thanks to the love in these videos Ill be main eventing evo in no time! 🙏🔥
Too many characters look cool! You made picking a team both easy and wayyy harder cause I didn't know much about some of these characters
I'm always excited for a new fighting game release because I know rooflemonger will come in clutch with the character overviews.
Thanks for the in-depth video. I’m new to KOF so I really didn’t know where to begin. Definitely gonna make sure King and Robert is on my first team!
I like the idea of some moves being called “belligerent.”
Gotta say this game is looking extra crispy. SNK really did a great job with the graphics.
Great video man! Straight to the point which I'm sure a lot of beginners are looking for.
i'm very happy to hear from you that whip can at least hang with the rest of the cast this time :') she seems to have gotten a LOT of quality of life adjustments so she can play KOF a bit better so i'm very very excited to have her on my team! thanks for the video, gives me an inkling of who else i might want to mess with in a few days!
This'll be my 1st KOF
Thank you so much for this guide! With so many characters to choose from, this helps get a quick feel on who I'd main
tbh I always choose characters that I like because of...well...it's character.
@@skytentheknight3294 hope that in the future snk put crossplay on it, so we wouldn't have to worry about it
@@skytentheknight3294 great! I’m agamembar on Xbox so feel free to add me. I hope to see you online for some matches.
That SF6 trailer though. Here's to hoping Xbox will get it as well.
Dude I am blown away by the quality of helpfulness of this video, instant sub!
The way you explain this stuff is very inviting and helpful to a new fighting game player like me, I appreciate your guides!
Happy to help!
What a fantastic guide. Thanks so much for this 🙂
Great character breakdown roofle! I haven't played since 13 and this will help me ease back into KoF after years of Guilty Gear
I can’t believe a dude did this for every character. This would have taken so long. Very well man I legit watched this from start to end
it took very long lol
Robert is a great beginner character because he has all the basic stuff, great normals, and he’s suave as fuck
As for solo fighting, Chris definitely stuck with me as my main during the Beta. Didn't really find a useful character during the 2nd beta but looking at a few choices for teams once it releases
Glad they sped up KODs run. His run in XIV was glacial
I swear man if fighting games was a school subject you would be a great teacher
You've become one of the FGC's most consistent RUclipsrs. I appreciate the hard work. Cheers!
I love this video is just here to be this conversation:
"So kof has a lot of characters."
Rooflemonger: "Yes"
"Which character has command grabs."
Rooflemonger: " Yes."
Rooflemomer: “Your entire cast better not be uppercut reversal when I get home!”
Rooflemonger:”…..”
honestly, as someone whos been trying to get into fighting games recently charge characters have never really clicked with me, I think I'm gonna try and learn how so I can play Leona, all her moves look so cool and her design and personality are so good
You should try to test Leona, she's actually one of the best beginner-friendly charge characters out there, it was with her that I learned how to play with them 😅
Leona has awesome normals. Kinda compensate for her being a charge character
Thank you for the effort you put in this video! I'm sure there are others like me somewhat new to KOF that watched it through!! 🙏
You're the best! 🤩 Thanks a lot for this in depth tutorial on every single character. RM the FGC teacher! 👨🎓
Thank you so much for this guide Bro! As a complete casual at Kof trying to learn the game this is a HUGE help!!!
Love the way you present. Detail yet informative. Thank you so much.
Happy to help!
Just played this game for fun with my friend and now I want to pick up this game! Thanks for this video!
