  • For tea tonight we are having an absolute Scottish Classic which is Stovies! If you’ve never heard of Stovies before, it’s a Scottish favourite based on potatoes and meat. Recipes and ingredients vary widely, but ALWAYS contains potatoes and onions, and also a meat element like sausages, beef, minced beef or other meat really. Traditional Scottish Stovies are absolutely delicious! This really is Comfort food at it's best. It's a simple one-pot dish, made on the stove-top, and I think that’s where the name comes from!

    Shopping List:
1.5 kg floury potatoes (such as Maris Piper or King Edwards
450g beef link sausages (which is about 5 or 6 links)
1 and a half pints of beef stock
2 medium carrots (rough small dice)
    2 medium onions (sliced)
    _________________________________________________________________
Throw everything into a slow cooker (for about 6 hours) or a large pan on the stove top on low for about 2 hours :)

I have just watched all of your recipes from Scotland and it has made me very sad that I was taken away from Scotland when I was 12 years old. I am now 77, have lived in London since, so it was good o watch your videos, I would like to thank you for reminding me of all these recipes and a taste from home. You you are so easy to watch and listen too.

I can mind when my Grannie used to make stovies when the Winter was in. They were brilliant. Also on Sunday mornings we used to have Stew, Mince, Carrots, Onions and Butter Beans, cooked in a big pot, for Breakfast, with a piece n dook (a slice of bread dipped in the gravy). Aye. The good old days. Ye cannae whack it.

Stovies never look pretty but they taste amazing, they're the best comfort food. They bring back a lot of good memories from when I was wee. My grandparents always used to make stovies and the whole family would come round. There were so many of us, gran had 9 adult children who all brought their partners and kids. Sometimes there was no room left in the house so us kids would sit out the front eating bowls of stovies in between climbing trees 😂. I live in central Scotland and this recipe is very similar to what we make but we almost always use square sausage. I've never made it in a slow cooker though but I've been wondering what that would be like.
    Sorry for the novel 😆

As an expat I've made my own stovies for years, they are the absolute best in comfort food, as is the Scottish tradition I've made them with what ever meat was leftover or available, in my opinion leftover Lamb roast is the best, one thing that was not addressed in the video is seasoning, stovies should be spicy, the addition of plenty of white pepper (black pepper does not give the same glow) and a couple of pinch o' salt will take care of that, you can make them on a stove top in about 45 minutes but the slow cooker is good if you want to come home to a ready made meal, I like to serve them with a side of coleslaw.

Stovies originate from the East coast, a real Tuechter meal made by agricultural workers and incorporating left overs from a joint of mutton, gifted to the workerst from the landowner. Stovies originally contained Mutton (possibly beef) ,dripping from the roasted joint, potato's and onion. And nothing else.

I grew up on the Firth of Clyde and when my Mum would make stovies it was always with slice and she would put dough buoys in it. I’ve not had them in a very long time as I became a vegetarian back in the late 80’s but I’m figuring out the best vegetarian mince to make my own slice with, so that I can 🙂

Hi lovely Cheryl. Inspired by you I just bought a slow cooker, and made this recipe as ‘the virgin” meal’ 😀 And it was soooooo lovely and my hubby was very happy and changed his mind about ‘the slow cooker being just another kitchen pot’ 🤩 Only downside for me is that the sausages I can get here are nowhere nearly as nice as the ones you can get in the UK 😒 so I’m actually thinking of making my own links next time - because this will surely be made again 💕

Richard Higgins try parboiling them on top of the stove. I live in America and I have to do that sometimes depending on what type of potatoes and carrots. It is hard to explain but I always take a bite of raw potato and from that bite I determine if the potatoes will be hard or easy to cook. My Mother did it that way and so did my Gran. We were all born in Kentucky and have Scottish ancestors

Very nice video showing hearty dinner .I'm from U.S. This is very similar to a stew with less liquid and quicker to make !

Not sure if you can answer this but do you, or any of your subscribers, know of a US equivalent for the sausage? Thank you!

Thank you. The reason I had asked is because I understand from friends that British sausages are quite a bit different than US sausages. I'll try a good beef sausage. Cheers!

You can order the British or Irish Bangers on Amazon or online. I'm an American and I gotta tell u I've Never had Sausage that comes close to this!! Their pork with a totally different seasoning and taste. Does Not compare. PS actually had the Butcher in ShopRite order me a case from the ad for it during this past st.paddy's day .I am obsessed lol Good luck

In Aberdeen we use leftover mince or beef

    • @WhatsForTea
      @WhatsForTea  6 лет назад +2

Hiya :) Yeah...I usually use mince, but the person who requested the recipe specifically asked for beef sausage...so that's why I used sausages :) I much prefer it with mince x
