    In high-school I had a deaf friend who had to re-take the SATs because she didn't put her pencil down when the proctor said "pencils down". She kept working until he actually came up to her to tell her the test was over. She tried to explain she was deaf and she didn't know but he still failed her. I was so pissed especially since at the beginning she talked to him and he said he would switch the lights off then on so she would know the time was over, but he didn't.

    context: this show is called switched at birth. the ginger hair girl, daphne, is deaf and that’s why they use sign language. daphnes father got in a car accident the night prior (because of a brain aneurism rupting) and daphne needed to take the SATs. Her father seemed fine and told her he’d want her to go take the SATs and that if anything went wrong she has her phone. So that’s why she seemed really nervous while taking the exam. The SATs are extremely strict so that’s why the teacher couldn’t be lenient either. I forget exactly what happens medically but he went brain dead and that’s when she read the lips of the nurses in the background. The brunette, Bay, is the girl that was switched at birth with daphne and she is the biological daughter of the man, Angelo. She was upset at Daphne for leaving to take the SATs, but yeah he went brain dead and dies unfortunately. He originally walked out on Daphne and her mother when they were young and when she went deaf and he accused her of having an affair as her mother and him were both hispanic and daphne was a white ginger girl. She was finally starting to connect with him again, and this happened. He also got to connect with Bay as well, but the situation was sad. I recommend the show it’s really good overall.

    While it's true that hospitalized family members need your help and support, you can't put your entire life on hold either. Most people can't afford to. The SAT is important for people who want to go to college and may need to bank on academic scholarships to fund their education. Also, you only get to take the actual test for free once. You have to pay to retake it.
    EDIT: Plus, in this scenario, Angelo told her, when he was still okay, that she should go and take the test. Everybody and every circumstance is different guys, nobody should be forced to do things they don't or can't do.

    • @JLee-gm6jx
      @JLee-gm6jx Месяц назад +176

      True. Plus, stuff like this will breed resentment. Imagine being reminded constantly that you cost someone their future because you couldn't tell the difference between showing support and having sacrifice. There are times where both do coincide but not always. I've been there and done that, hopefully never again. I used to blame my brother for making me miss junior prom because he had his wisdom teeth removed that day. Parents wanted to go on a date night. Grandma asked why I didn't have prom pictures for her, so I told her the reason I couldn't go. I thought she would get mad at my brother, but she was more mad at my parents.

    • @GoldenHorizonCinema
      @GoldenHorizonCinema  Месяц назад +154

      Absolutely, you're spot on. Balancing life's responsibilities with the urgent needs of a hospitalized loved one is incredibly challenging. While being there for family in times of crisis is important, it's equally valid to recognize that life doesn’t pause, especially when big milestones like the SAT are involved. For students banking on scholarships, the SAT could be a make-or-break opportunity for their future.
      It’s a tough situation where emotions run high, and it’s easy for misunderstandings to happen. The person who took the test likely feels torn between their goals and family expectations, while the others might interpret it as indifference, even if that’s not the case.
      These moments really highlight how people cope differently under stress-and how communication (or the lack of it) can create conflict. Did the show’s resolution feel fair to you, or did it leave you wanting more closure?

      This is really different for everyone. The resentment can go both ways. One of my family members was forced to do a band audition for college and wasn’t permitted to leave till performance was over. We had the call for our other family members who was on hospice, they were having their last bit of lucidity and the doctors said it would likely happen in the next 30 min to hour.
      They didn’t make it in time and ended up quitting music all together.
      Some people will value that closure and moment for their process to move on over something you can have another chance to do, even if you have to get help to do it. A test or audition can happen again, your final good byes can’t.

      During normal exams, sure. If provided with proof, yes. The student can have the phone. (They do this in college too). However, during major test such as ACTs, Benchmarks, SATs, basically any state test it is not allowed whatsoever. If the situation does occur, what you have to do is one of these options
      - Provide a note to the school and the hospital/doctors office so that they both remain in contact in case of an emergency. You will NOT be giving any medical information. Just a note to the school with a vague description of what's going on and a note to the hospital with the school's phone number or teacher's cellphone / teacher's landline (the one the school provides for cases like these and other situations)
      - This one is tricky, but with permission can be done. Basically you sign a waiver for the teacher to have access to your phone during the test (no pass code, just the ability to answer the phone) in case of an emergency.
      Those are the only 2 options. If the school is not notified with documents of what is going on, the school has the right to deny requests. Why? Because there are students who lie about emergencies to have their phones during tests to cheat. So because the bad eggs did something, it ruins it for everyone like this case up here.
      Edit: So you can't blame the teacher or the school. They are doing what they are supposed to do. The student didn't provide the information to complete their request. Therefore, if the teacher allowed this and a monitor saw the phone during the SAT, no matter the situation the teacher would be suspended or worse, fired, and the student would get an automatic 0 no retake unless they pay for it later.

      I can understand why you feel that way. The girl was clearly in a difficult situation, trying to balance family responsibility with her future. It seems like she made the best decision for herself given the circumstances. Her father’s condition likely made it so she couldn’t provide support in the way she’d want to be at the hospital, especially if he was in a medically induced coma. Meanwhile, the SAT or ACT is such a critical part of her future, and it’s not just a test-it has significant long-term consequences for college, scholarships, and financial aid.
      The teacher, on the other hand, had a responsibility to respect the situation, but the rigid policies sometimes leave little room for empathy or flexibility, especially in the case of standardized testing. It’s hard when the system doesn’t seem to account for real-world emotional realities.
      In the end, the girl was doing what she could under difficult circumstances, and I can see why you think she was right. It’s a complex situation where both perspectives are understandable, but in this case, her needs were more urgent.

Also it is very important for financial aid and scholarships for college. I get if it was a normal exam but it isn’t. Also all she would be doing in the hospital would be sitting there while her dad gets tests done. @GoldenHorizonCinema  Месяц назад

      You bring up a great point about the significance of tests like the ACT, especially when it comes to things like college admission, financial aid, and scholarships. It's not just a regular exam-it can impact a lot of future opportunities. In situations where the student has a valid reason for needing to take the test (like a family emergency), it's understandable that they would prioritize the exam, especially if being at the hospital wouldn’t allow them to be of much help to their family member, who may not even be conscious or responsive.
      In cases like this, it really comes down to balancing the emotional need to be with family and the practical necessity of taking the test for your future. It's a tough choice, but your perspective is valid-attending the test in such a situation makes sense. Would you have thought the same if the test had been something like a final exam at school, or do you think it’s different when it’s tied to your future?

      You’re absolutely right-it’s not the girl's fault for wanting to be there for her family, and she did the best she could by arriving at the hospital as quickly as possible. The idea that having more people in the hospital room would somehow speed up recovery doesn't make sense, especially when the person you're supporting still needs space to heal and the focus should be on their well-being.
      As for the teacher, that’s a huge oversight. If accommodations were made for her to have her phone in case of an emergency, the teacher should have respected that, especially considering the situation. It's clear that her frustration with the “stupid test” came from emotional overwhelm and fear, but that shouldn’t have been directed at someone who was just doing their best under a stressful situation.
      I can totally understand why you’d feel confused and upset by the teacher's actions. It sounds like the teacher missed the bigger picture and failed to handle the situation with empathy. The whole thing seems like a series of misunderstandings that led to unnecessary stress for everyone involved.

    Fast forward many seasons, Bay meets Angelo, her bio dad. He gets into a serious car accident.

    • @GoldenHorizonCinema
      @GoldenHorizonCinema  Месяц назад

      I completely agree. Family absolutely comes first, especially in a crisis. No test, no matter how important, should ever take precedence over being there for loved ones when they need you most. The emotional weight of that kind of situation can’t be underestimated, and it’s difficult to focus on anything else when your family’s well-being is at stake.
      In an ideal world, there would be more understanding and flexibility in moments like these, where family emergencies are recognized, and accommodations are made to ensure people don’t have to choose between their future and being there for those they love. It’s moments like these that highlight how important it is to balance empathy with rules.
      How do you think that situation could have been handled differently to allow for both family support and fairness in the testing process?

      SATs are a joke- honestly? They don’t fucking dictate a damn thing. Do You know what they are meant for? Determining the effectiveness of Heck the ACTs make more sense! Those actually go to your college record- You take the appropriate SATs in late elementary and middle school!
      Besides, accommodations like that legally have to be followed. You don’t? It’s a lawsuit. Families have sued and won. Wanna know why? It’s an abusive power trip and an ADA violation.
      I should know- while i didn’t have it on me, my phone was required to be in the room and on for panic and anxiety disorders so they could let my mom know. I also had extended time for adhd, AND had a mandated time to leave for medication. I had those followed. This is not difficult-

      If the student uses their phone at all their test is thrown out. If the device goes off in a room full of students, all of the students’ exams are technically supposed to be thrown out as well. Whether the school paid for the test or students paid individually, since some people take the SAT outside of their mandated year or date, it affects the other students. Rescheduling her personal exam for a different test day would make the most sense, but it costs money and it may be the last one of the year, so she would have to delay her college applications for a while

My dad and my sister were like, you aren't performing the surgery, and only two of us can be down in surgical ICU. Stay in here and take the test...there were no makeups allowed. I broke my tablet, and didn't even have a way to take it anymore. A coworker loaned me his iPad, and I took my test. I passed. My graduation happened on the day of my mom's last surgery, a brain surgery. So, I obviously didn't attend that. My case study partner took a picture of my name as it scanned across the main screen, and sent it to me. It was so sweet, and two months later, my mom was thrilled to see it.

    I've administered the SATs many times. For context, it's run by the college board not the schools. Everything is super strict. The students in this room are too close together. The phone ringing is a huge violation. The test doesn't require listening so no modifications needed. You have to apply to the College Board for special accommodations and most requests are denied. Not following one rule could cause the whole class could have their scores invalidated. If it's more serious the whole testing group at that location can be invalidated.
