Little Feat had the soul, the funk, the blues, the rock, the roll and a smattering of jazz. These guys were players for real. They carved out their own.
with some Cajun spice to the stew.
I could not have said it better myself. And I am a conceited narcissist. :-)
@@elwood4939 A little bit of Cayenne Pepper and Garlic
Heavily New Orleans influenced, country, funk, blues, R&B, jazz in their musical gumbo.
Lowell George's slide guitar playing on this is sublime.
A band that was far more talented than their limited success would indicate. Little Feat was one of the most highly respected rock bands, by other musicians. They never quite reached popularity, with their best known song, "Dixie Chicken," receiving a fair amount of radio play, but never breaking the top 100.
They are not necessarily a funky band, though those last two tracks prove them quite capable of it, but a very diversified band that touches blues, rock, soul, and country pretty much equally in their writing (or George Lowell's writing).
They are their own genre, and should have been in the R&R hall of fame years ago
It's like old Bootsy said. ..
Sometimes the Groove is so deep you can't get out 🤠
Amen that Brother!
You gotta, Feel The Groove.
You guys would love the live album that everyone is telling you about, Waiting for Columbus. Dixie Chicken!
Definitely do the whole album! Followed immediately by their legendary live album Waiting for Columbus. This song was written and sung by Paul Barrère, one of the key creative leaders of the band. Lowell George was the Feat’s leader and guiding spirit, but his ongoing drug issues throughout the band’s history often made him unreliable. I’d argue that this album was Lowell’s creative peak. From this point on it was Paul Barrère and Bill Payne (the keyboard player) who picked up the slack
Waiting for Columbus is must see
I know it divides some Featnatics but I think these guys would enjoy "The Last Record Album".
John, I totally agree with your assessment. I've been a Feat's fan since just a little after they started. "Skin It Back" is one of my top five.
Agree with others that have commented about checking out the live versions. Waiting For Columbus is one of the greatest live albums ever made, and the version of Spanish Moon on that one will change your life. Hoy, Hoy is another live album and it has a killer version of Skin It Back featuring the Tower Of Power Horns. Check that stuff out if you really want to hear what they can do.
I'm gonna chime in with everyone else that you need to do a full album reaction to "Waiting for Columbus". Every track is worth doing. One of the best live albums ever. "Fat Man in a Bathtub", "Spanish Moon", "Dixie Chicken", "Willin'/Don't Bogart That Joint" are some highlights.
Beautiful brothers, back in the day they were know as a musicians favorite band...Lowell George put it all together .....RIP.
Listen to Bonnie Raitt and you will hear echoes of Lowell George which is where she learned the slide guitar.
I was fortunate to see Little Feat with Lowell twice at the Fox in Atlanta. I believe it was '76, Bonnie Raitt was the opening act. She had the crowd fired up. About half way through her set the members of Little Feat would wander out song by song and join her band. She sang backup during the Little Feat set. I've seen hundreds of concerts since, but that one is definitely top five.
Little Feat, Highly underrated group IMO. They stay on the Top of my playlists!
To give you an idea of how this band was a musician's band, it was Jimmy Page's favorite American band. High praise, indeed. For me, they don't even need to sing. I can just listen to that musicianship for hours. So much talent, so many tasty licks being laid down all around. They had some success, but never got that big, but there's a long list of bands who were influenced by them. Some of those who recorded their music were The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Robert Palmer, Linda Ronstadt, Van Halen, Joe Walsh, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), and Gregg Allman. Just to name a few.
This band has a pretty diverse catalog. They definitely have a funky element but also have blues and country sounding songs. They're definitely one of the best!
Little Feat...yes, yes, yes!!
Welcome to Little Feat! They do the full damn thing…..all things Americana. On tour in your back yard….and 40 years on, they play this as near as dammit as the original. Great new members with the “old guys” holding up well!
Feat got da funk! You've gotta get deep into that "Waiting for Columbus" live album with the Tower of Power horns! There are two distinct "Feats" : with Lowell George and post Lowell George (RIP!). Both great, but it was Lowell's band and the early stuff is where it's at for me. Albums with Lowell: "Little Feat", "Sailin' Shoes", "Dixie Chicken", "Feats Don't Fail Me Now", "The Last Record Album", "Time Loves a Hero", "Down on The Farm", and the live albums "Waiting for Columbus" and "Hoy, Hoy". As far as singles go, I think you'd dig: "Spanish Moon" "Mercenary Territory" "Fat Man in The Bathtub" "Dixie Chicken" the red hot scorcher "Tripe Face Boogie" "Rocket in My Pocket". You will eventually want to consume it ALL! It's lifetime music!
I actually love "Time loves a hero" album. "Day at the dog races" displays their best music and vocals. "Cold, cold, cold" endind is a treat.
So killer. This was underground when it came out, and still is.
Vocals by Guitarist Paul Barrere, who also wrote this catchy tune. Though they are geographically from Los Angeles, the members are from all over, and they sort of have a New Orleans feel to their music. But they are truly citizens of the world. Little Feat are one of the best, yet most underrated bands to ever grace a stage. Had the pleasure of seeing them about ten times over the years, they are STILL active, and if you can get to one of their shows, DO IT!!! And yes, do the whole album, and the next, and the next. Etcetera.
Paul and some of the other members are the backing musicians on the Nicolette Larson album "Nicolette". Eddie Van Halen also makes an uncredited appearance on one track.
Paul Barrere on vocals on this one. Great live version on Waiting for Columbus.
Little Feat are my go to~
Yes, yes, yes - Now you've gotta listen to the live Waiting For Columbus . The groove and funk are double delicious. Listen to this Old Man; get that funk rolling. WAITING FOR COLUMBUS the entire album.
Oh, how I have forgotten how wonderfully FUNKY these little feat are.
Love Little Feat!! ❤️ Two Trains is another one of my favs. All the songs suggested are great., Mercenary Territory, All that you dream, Fat Man in the Bathtub, Down on the Farm. Back in the 60's and 70's rock was a blend of influences and so were the bands themselves. This time period was one of the most creative time periods in music.
You guys are ROCKIN IT!!!!!! Been a Feat addict nearly my entire life. Went to music school, became a singer, and just wanted to sing backup to Little Feat - after hearing Dixie Chicken . Richie Hayward is one of the best, tastiest, funkiest drummers you will EVER hear. He and Sammy Clayton on congas --- a dream - then there's Billy Payne takin' everybody to church each time he hits the keys ....... boy do I miss them all.
We listened to Little Feat every day in the 70s! I still have all my vinyl. One of my friends was so obsessed that he insisted we only listen to Little Feat because nothing else compared.
Always loved little feat
All their albums are brilliant
Yes sir guy's I love Little Feat man they're excellent Lowell George excellent voice
I continue to be impressed by these selections. Zappa the other day, and a pair from Little Feet? You’ve got a knowledgeable family of viewers. Congrats…
Spanish Moon keeps that groove going.
"Lowell George met Bill Payne when George was a member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Payne had auditioned for the Mothers, but had not joined. They formed Little Feat along with former Mothers' bassist Roy Estrada and drummer Richie Hayward from George's previous band, The Factory."-Wikipedia The name actually comes from a comment Zappa made about Lowell having the tiniest feet he had very seen on a man.
Little Feat....great band. I know you previously did Spanish Moon, but that tune is sooo much better live. Really, they take it up a notch live and the album "Waiting For Columbus" is considered one of the all time greatest live recordings. If you get a chance, go back and do Spanish Moon live from that album. Either way, continue on w/ this band...all 6 releases in the 70's are classic.
Waiting for Columbus is worthy of an entire album review.
@@mikecavaretta2621 Agree 100%....the songs come alive and the Tower of Power horn section add so much. Little Feat a California based band that stayed intact to this day. Unfortunately, of the core 7 original members a few have passed away along the way.
Either this music is timeless or you guys were born late! You guys recognize the funk of a Southern Rock Band. I was a northerner just absolutely loving this sound as it was coming out. Couldn't get enough. Spanish Moon was funky too with horns aplenty.
Little Feat was Robert Plant's favorite band in the 70's Richie Hayward the drummer for Little Feat played on a few Robert Plant solo albums. Good Stuff!
👍👍👍👍👍
RIP Lowell, Paul, and Ritchie
Just found you two last week. LOVING IT. " The Fan" on this album is up there on my criminally unheralded list.
Yes another great dig!!
Back in the day, Lowell George was one of the 1st using 16 track recording on his recordings. Excellent quality tracks. Listen to Down on the Farm, you'll love it! So many to hear. They do it all. Jazz, country, funk, everything...
Saw them live 3 times, and it was a party!! They touched so many in the industry you've no idea. Don't pass it up.
Keep on rocking!!
Little feat were definitely underrated and under ground
Always just a hint of New Orleans in everything they do. I dig that!!!
Little Feat is the best. Please checkout their double live album "Waiting for Columbus". So baddass.
Reminds me of a Dead type Jam Band with more funk
I love/loved seeing them live where they turn a 4 minutes song into a 20 minute jam.
Waiting For Columbus album. Listen to the whole album. Your ears, heart, soul and mind will love it. 👣
Lots of great blues songs from this era. Great choice.
The musical beat / count is just enough off / different from mainstream that it POPS! Can't unrember the beat...skin it back....love it....they are NO secret to 70's rock lovers.😊
Lowell George another Frank Zappa desciple! Always with the Funk!
Awesome aren't they. I been a fan for 40 plus years! you need to react to Rock and Roll Doctor! A true loss to the music world when Lowell George passed Lead singer and played guitar. The founder.
Little Feat!!❤❤ Just another of my favs. I remember eagerly anticipating their new releases. Not wildly popular, but that makes it better!!
Great music with a sense of humor. Dixie Chicken always makes me chuckle. Old Folks Boogie - you know you’re over the hill when your mind makes a promise your body can’t fill. I agree with everybody about Waiting For Columbus. Put on the ‘phones and listen from start to finish. You’ll be better off for it….😎☮️❤️
I have always loved that verse from Old Folks Boogie. I am now living it ha ha!
@@bradsense7431 Same! And for a while I could relate to “fat man in the bathtub with the blues…” 🤣🤣😎☮️❤️
Keep ON with this amazing group! What they do with funk and time/rhythm are incredible.
It's about time you guys got to this.
"Gimmie some skin" and "skin it back" were expressions used as acknowledgement or when something was truly righteous you would hold out your hands and say "gimmie some skin" and pad each others palms and the response for that is "skin it back" then you repeat the hand action, followed by, cool man.
Wrong, in this case. “Skin it back” is centered around the uncircumcised penis. If you had one of those, and you were wanting a little something from a female…you’d tell her to skin it back. Don’t believe me as it relates to this song…look it up.
A great band with an incredible catalog of great music Kiss It Off is a short song but possibly my favorite, hard to pick a favorite Little Feat song
Little Feat is such a great band, with consistently great, catchy songwriting, fantastic playing and like I just mentioned on your Chaka Khan video, killer grooves (with a lot of the groove attributed to their drummer, Richie Hayward....RIP). A lot of people will say that their best material was during their early period with Lowell George (and that is great), but their 1990 album Representing The Mambo is incredible. I would highly recommend checking out the song The Ingenue from that album. I think you guys will love it because it's got a lot of jazz influences, some killer riffs and horn parts, including an incredible sax solo by the legendary Michael Brecker.
Song Meaning "Skin it back" is an age old expression used by musicians and people living in the Delta. It means to "Roll up your sleeves and go harder".
Makes me wanna dig out my platforms, bell bottoms and see if I can get my hair to grow again… an infectious groove to make you move.
When you find some time, you should react to Down on the Farm - Little Feat. It's a great song and it gives even more insight into their sense of humor while throwing down great music. Be well fellas!
Sampled? Fellas, their song “Fool Yourself” has been sampled in 99 hip hop/rap tracks, including A Tribe Called Quest (“Bonita Applebaun”), 2Pac (“Papa’z Song”), Mobb Depp (“G.O.D. Part III”), etc.
I looked it up after we recorded this. Tons of samples!!
Hell yah! You got it! I got to see them live with Lowell George the year before he died so so prematurely. I can see and hear that performance today, and I'm 65. I'm so blessed.
Bringing the pulse here .
One that drives their Train :
"HI ROLLER".
You didn't notice the car is a Lincoln......Lincoln, Monroe and Washington. Inadvertently 3 presidents. A slick painting.
Feat had a strong following of dedicated fans. Not a massive following, but substantial enough. The band never had any hit radio singles, but lots of good tunes and albums that were all killer, no filler. Sad that mainstream radio never really got on board.
Not many of the original members are left now, but the music lives on.
Jamband to max !
My 'go to' band all the time
Hey guys.... this just might get you out of your seats dancing....Samba Pa Ti - Santana (Live in Mexico)
I love me some Little Feat! Their Waiting For Columbus live album is so classic! Been in my play rotation constantly since the 80’s
I’ve been obsessed listening to their song
“Easy to Slip”
Great song. Try it!
Great stuff
little Feat from LA. Funk plus blues plus rock plus Nawlins. You guys have excellent taste in music. Try their live album, Waiting for Columbus. Enjoy!
You guys said it: dope.
Fat man in the bathtub from the Old Grey Whistle Test is an incredible live performance.
Great reaction, legendary band 🙏❤️
My favorite band, the term Skin it back refers to the fact that the writer Pail Barrere was uncircumcised.
Yay! Love Little Feat....like others have stated, their live albums are oh so much fun and funky. Can't help but start groovin. Brings me back to my college days in Oregon.
The Feat are great! Saw them a few months before Lowell died. Yeah, I'm old.
Go for "The Fan" from the same album.
"Easy To Slip" is probably my favorite Feat tune.
Don't recall hearing this song before? Love Little FEAT! I played Waiting For Columbus album on the daily, some how I missed this one..but not now. Would enjoy more from this album! Feats don't fail me now...☮️
Always great finding a new, old song!! Thanks Bros. Air Play Beats all the rest. Getn FRESH views by two musicians... GREAT CHANNEL 🔥⭐️👍🏼 "FUNKY"
The singer actually sounds like Walter Becker who barely ever sang in Steely Dan but has a low key incredible voice .. checkout his track Hard up Case and Down in the bottom off his 11 Tracks of Wack record also Girl next door to the methadone clinic the one where he’s playing to his gf holding a vhs cam is one of my fav performances ever
The phrase 'skin it backs was a reference to an uncircumcised man's.... No joke! Paul Barrère, lead singer and writer said that.
They got some DEEEEEP groves thanks for putting me on to them
Little Feat's music ain't for everybody It's just for the really cool folks 😆 Glad y'all are enjoying them. That album is a good one. Rock and Roll Doctor is my favorite on it. The Dixie Chicken album is another good one, and also the Time Loves A Hero album.
If you like the funky feel of Little Feat, I'd suggest the band, The Meters. Check out the song Fire On the Bayou or Hey Pocky a Way. They won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award a few years ago.
The Neville Brothers are another band in a similar style.
Who thought of putting George Washington and Marilyn Monroe in the car? That would be the artist Neon Park (RIP).
He did all of the artwork on their album covers, and they're all excellent.
The slide guitar is incomparable. Dirty nasty funk going on here.
Keep on goin'......the whole album.
If you like this check out ,Right place , wrong time by Dr John , also Red streamliner by Little Feat
Saw them in 2003 in Hamilton Ontario .They played this song
You guys are uncanny in your song selections. Little Feat had 3,4,5 albums that are stone cold classics, full of great songs. But you picked my 2 favorite songs (Spanish Mood, Skin it Back) from my favorite album to do. Nice. Kind of like when you did Free Fire and Water instead of the usual. Nice. I 2nd everyone saying you should do some live stuff from Columbus, it is very very good. Always fun to watch your stuff.
It’s so good skin it back is on there twice
Hoy Hoy album was mostly from a tribute concert for Lowell George’s family after he died. He hadn’t really provided for them (life insurance). The live versions of studio recordings were exceptional. As others have mentioned…Waiting for Columbus is exceptional. Michael McDonald, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson and others were all on Hoy Hoy. Gringo song is my favorite…Mr. Bill Payne{ 😊
Check out Time Loves a Hero (studio), And the Waiting for Columbus ( live album) I’d like to hear what you think of them.
"Day at The Dog Races" from Hero always freaks everybody out! Not Lowell's favorite, but it's a Bill Payne showcase!
Funky as heyyyyyylllll
In case no one else answers, they were from LA. Lowell George had previously been a member of Frank Zappas band, The Mothers Of Invention. Ya gotta hear Cold, Cold, Cold /Tripe Face Boogie which is the final song on the album.
BTW, the digital transfer of this album is criminal. We used to use the vinyl as a reference for Hi-Fis. If you ever have an opportunity to hear it on vinyl, jump on it.
Thats flat out funky
What else can you say about L.F.? I think everything has already been written...! They are (were) absolute, fucking great musicians and song writers. Their stage presence was great and so was the sound. I agree with @John Hoerl, you should definitely hear "waiting for columbus" complete and present it here. I already wrote it for your "spanish moon" vid - but nobody listens to me 😂. Thanks for sharing and keep it up, I`ll stay tuned. Best regards @all from hamburg (germany)
Somebody once said, in regard to Little Feat, " Nobody is playing what you're hearing". Which I guess is a kinda, ' the total is greater than the sum of the parts' type of thing. Anyway, it made sense to me at the time. Admittedly, I was pretty stoned. 🙂
Feats Don't Fail Me Now was my first 8 track in my 77 dodge.
Cover art by Neon Park, Skin it back refers to those of us dudes with the turtle necks still attached!
Love me some feat! Thanks guys
Little Feat are a cut above.
That walking bassline is nice
Little Feat!! You guys are simply the best haha
Like others have said, Waiting For Columbus is an essential live album but I would say that their studio albums are just as good, especially SAilin' Shoes and Dixie Chicken. This was led Zeppelin's favorite American rock band
Their most famous studio album -- and maybe their best -- is Dixie Chicken. But it's certainly not their only essential album -- as evidenced by the one you're listening to and all the people shouting out for Waiting for Columbus. Their best known songs are probably "Dixie Chicken", "Willin'", "Spanish Moon" and "Fat Man in the Bathtub" -- but man they have a lot of good songs. They're a mixed race group like so many of the best groups (especially West Coast groups) from that era: Sly and the Family Stone, War, Tower of Power, Love and others. I wouldn't say Little Feat is obscure from classic rock fans back in the day, but probably fans younger than boomers don't really know them much. Their leader, Lowell George, died in the late 70s. After a break they restarted and made good music without him, though never at the level when Lowell was at the helm.
