Burbot are a native fish that not many people have heard about. They are North America's only freshwater member of the cod family. More often targeted in the winter months when they are more active Burbot can be caught year-round and are found in many lakes and and rivers throughout Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Often referred to as poor man's lobster Burbot has firm white flaky meat that is considered choice for edibility. In this video Sidra and I spent a couple evenings targeting Burbot while camping in the Selkirks.

The kokanee trolling videos are great and very informative, but I definitely enjoy your videos where you target other species, river fish from the bank, hike in, etc.

Hey Tyler, I enjoy your videos, knowledge and insight of the North West Pacific Fisheries. They've helped me revisit what I learned as a boy and am now passing on to my 11 year old son. Fishing is a right of passage as they say and I'm pleased to say my son is hooked! Your videos and tutorials helped us land some nice rainbows and kokanee this summer. Now his sights are set on fall salmon. This video on Burbot is awesome as this fishery is often overlooked! We're north of the 49th around Vancouver BC in the lower mainland, if you're ever up this way, drop a line (no pun intended)!

Glad you made a video on this. Most of what I can find on catching them is exclusive to ice fishing.
Flaming gorge has them and they're invasive. So you have to kill any you catch.

My favorite lake. It's where I first tried all your tips and tricks for Kokanee and we slayed. Yeah, they're tiny kokes but it is a great beginner experience and was a confidence booster for a newbie.

If you like burbot you should plan an ice fishing trip to flaming gorge this winter. They are huge in there and they have tournaments to try to reduce their numbers. Some bucket biologist introduced them years ago and they took off. Unfortunately they eat the Kokanee and not the stunted lake trout.

If you want to charge up glow-in-the-dark lures fast and have them be bright, use a UV flashlight. I've got one for UV resins that I use for fly tying that I bring along when fishing with glow lures. Works fast and charges them bright.

Ling: Member of the cod family (Atlantic)
Ling Cod: Not a member of the cod family (Pacific)
This is why taxonomy is WAAAY better than "common names", even though it isn't always reliable either. LOL
I REALLY want to catch a few of those. Bucket list fish, entirely because they're weird and ugly.

It is funny that lingcod are not a close relative to burbot as burbot are to cod. I am unfamiliar with burbot but they sure look like lingcod to me. The folks who study phylogenetics complicate the way we classify organisms but it is really interesting to see how everything really relates on the genetic scale. Great work catching neat fish!!
