Oh the times have changed. Back in '95, a friend had a S12 and I had the '95 200SX (non SE-R, fwd crap). The friend w/ the S12 gawked over my '95 since it was "newer". We were young and stupid.
I let my uncle talk me out of a mint turbo 300zx for 2k because "turbos go bad". Then i had a s13 picked out and on the way there stopped at a another car lot and fell in love with a geo storm and went home with it instead lol.
As a Z31 owner, these are great cars, the VG30 is a solid engine, the 71C (NA spec) is the S13/S14 5 speed. They also come in turbo and the 87-89 turbos have a 30A 5-speed (used in Z32’s and GTR’s, yes, bad MF) and a CLSD. Buy a cheap Turbo Z31, boost controller, BOV, intercooler, and you have a very fun car

The aw11 is my favourite car of all time, im really glad it made it onto this list because not many people talk about it! If I remember correctly toyota wanted the mr2 to be a luxury car but then changed it to be a sports car! Also finaly someone gave the s12 some much needed love
i own an is300 (toyota altezza), i was able to get a turbo kit from a scrapped is300, and it makes roughly about 480. the only downside is that its automatic, but since its the 5 speed (instead of the 4 speed AWD variant) its able to be used in triptronic. i have one of the shifter buttons on the steering wheel linked to a 2-step, just hold it down, ramp up the turbo and let go.
the thing with cars that have mismatched fenders. that "5 grand" is a hidden sucker cost. That sw20 you posted was smacked pretty good in an accident and if you remove those fenders and bumpers you may find all kinds of compromised chassis under there, the car might not run straight - not something you want with an eventual lots of power when you "Build up" to the dream from the project. Any time you buy a crashed car, you also have to deal with rust hidden deep inside the hollow cavities of the frame that you cannot see until they are basketball sized bubbles of flaked metal. Something to consider. Your page seems to be on the ven-diagram of mid 20 something, more enlightened (read: semi-enlightened) but not quite there yet to see that the magical "5 grand car" can simply never be; they are all contingent on the idea of "becoming" your dream car for cheaper and that is never the case. and I mean never.

I managed to get a 1973 Chevy Nova for 2800 bucks in running condition with a 400ci SBC, a TH350, and a 10 bolt rear. You can get all kind of gems if you put in the work Moral of the story, you can even get good ol muscle cars as the people that owned them are passing on now, and their kids/grandkids are inheriting them and not knowing/caring what they are and flipping them on marketplace. Also, I could fit a full queensize bed in the back with the rear seats folded down.
Yes, it is a carb car. I have a carb cheater from Thunderhead289 and Ive welded the rear end, put on leaf spring stiffeners and converted the front to coils, motor runs happily NA for now, with plans of doing old school blow through carb turbo'd. Currently sitting happy at 430 wheel.
Had an 1984 S12 with the CA20E in high school in 1988/89 and it was the first car I broke 100mph driving. It was my dad’s car and he gave it to me to use while he drove a used Sentra. I would race my friend who had an 1989 Prelude Si 4WS everywhere in that car. Unfortunately, some idiot without insurance T-boned the car while driving across an intersection in 1990 while I visited home from college for the summer. To this day I have been looking for another but all I see are ones that have been trashed and had the diff welded, I’d like one with the CA or the 1.8 Turbo.

Note on the MR2 Spyder, the 2000-2002 are a lot cheaper than the 2003-2005 cars. These are the ones you'll find for 5k. A lot of the "facelift" cars are starting at like 10k

Many ppl tend to stay away from it because of the bad reputation it has of being unreliable, but again if you wanna use it for fun or project then sure but as a daily better have a second car.
They were marketed as luxury cars (which makes sense as they were sold under Toyota’s luxury marque Lexus). The vast majority of people who buy a luxury car don’t want to and/or cannot be bothered to drive a manual. Luxury cars are about convenience and relaxation without having to lift more than one finger or foot at a time. If it’s not as comfortable as the couch they have in their living room, they won’t buy one.
Z31 can be reliable some are cheap but prices are sky rocketing. Mines never let me down. Its not going to do what a normal sports coupe does it cant drift or handle all that well without a ton of mods. I love mine

Great video but you need to do more research. The g35 does not have the HR at all unless you get the sedan variant as a 2007 or newer. The coupe only comes DE.
At least in Oregon MR2s are INSANELY expensive. I think a MUCH better choice is the 7th gen Celica. I went with a 141K mile GT-S personally and you get the 2ZZ. Yeah it was a lot more than this, but still with upgrades, it's been pretty amazing and very practical as a daily. IS300 prices are also insane, even for crap. I feel like I made the right choice. Also I have an 88's Supra so don't even listen to me about value lol, but out of everything on this list, it's the most luxury and plush and if you look around, they aren't crazy expensive.
Them bimmer boys are thriving. (Iam the bimmer boy). On a serious note, you can find the 1990s and Early 2K BMWs for very cheap. Mines is 323i for $2000
Man , if buying a car is hard for you guys, Its hard to believe in my country, i live in brazil and dream of living in the U.S. and buying a car, but the cheapest new car there costs like 70k. Meanwhile, the minimum wage here is about 1600 or something like that. It's tough to find a good car that doesn’t have a history of speeding tickets or whose documents aren't being chased for some reason. And we can't forget that our currency is like 6 times weaker-1 dollar equals about 6 reais. Here, there's this guy who made RUclips videos. He lived in Japan, bought a JDM car, and when he came back with his custom ride, his girlfriend (who’d been asking him for money for school) said she needed a big sum. So, he ended up selling his dream car just to help her, and she disappeared, leaving him heartbroken. Really crazy story, and if you seen the before and after you will notice, is not just a car, its a dream, its like your partner, Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck. Don't give up on your dreams! God bless you all, Sorry if my english is bad, I learned it playing Minecraft and COD on my Xbox 360.
I have to put some light here. Realistically I would never recommend any of the cars on this list. Unless, and heavy unless, you are willing to put funds into the car for an extended period of time. At $5k or below that vast majority of these cars are not worth it at all. 1. MR2 Spyder is known for burning oil depending on on model year 2. MR2 SSW. You are going to spend more money than it's worth simply due to the age like most cars from that time. Also decent examples go for way more than $5k 3. IS300. Gas milage is dogshit. The rocker panels are very known to rust. You can find good examples of this car, but do your due diligence when going to look at one(Seriously most of these are clapped by idiots. Not talking about those who use it for motorsports, but the takeover crowd.) 4. G35. Buy it from a good used car dealer. Most good ones have a reputation to uphold. That's where I got mine back in 2012. Buying from a private seller is very risky (Due to most of these, again, being used for some foolishness.) 5. 350z. Read 4. 6. NB Miata. It's fun to drive, but a lot of people have brought them strictly for clout like all these cars listed. Also, at least for me the horsepower becomes a factor when pretty much everything on the road is passing you. Modifying is not worth it as there is already faster platforms available. If built the car is cool, but is a rolling death trap due to the weight and wheel base. If stock just keep the maintenance up and fix whatever issues it has due to age. 7. NA Miata. Fun to drive, but like the NB you might get to a point you are chasing horsepower. If you like it stock just keep up with maintenance 8. Z31. As I mentioned UNLESS you are ready to put money into it for an extended period of time do not buy this. 9. 200SX S12. Not worth at that age. Parts are few and very far in between. Car will live on jackstands 10. MR2 AW11. See line 2, but more money involved

Bought a 92 sc400 black with tan interior for 3k, running and driving, working ac, already on tien coils and wheels. For a cheap drift platform the Lexus SC is a steal right now. The infamous A80 Supra was designed off of these cars and they come with either a 2jz or a 1uz both fantastic platforms for reliable drift cars to get seat time in and beat.
I also bought and still own a 99 sc300 silver with black interior in beautiful shape for 5500$. Sure it has some small blemishes but the car gets thumbs up from old Porsche drivers and Ferrari drivers, for $5500 you have to love it. It’s as reliable as a Camry, I daily drive it, and it handles like a mk4 Supra once you do suspension and wheels. Even with the 99 automatic transmissions you can daily drive it comfy as can be, and still downshift it and slide it anywhere anytime
Then people laugh at a $5000 civic thats is in half-decent condition. Years later said civics are gapping hellcats.
Some civics definitely would be on this list if they were RWD
@@hakosan86 they would be one of the most sought after jdm cars if they were rwd
Yeah with a motor swap. Definitely not gapping a hellcat stock... 😂
With 100k in mods 😂😂😂
@@jesusm7754 you could gap a hellcat with 30/40k into a civic lol even less if you cut corners
Man... I had a 86' 200sx back in 89/90 exactly like one you found for sell...thing was not fast but was fun to drive. I've totally forgotten about that car but now I want one again.
Hell yeah bro love your channel
Thanks bro! Really appreciate your support!
A year ago I got a FB RX7 for under 5k. Gotta fix the clutch now but god that car is a blast to drive!
nah that harris clip at 35, right after "IM BROKE MAN" is almost..... too perfect lmao
The aw11 is my favourite car of all time, im really glad it made it onto this list because not many people talk about it! If I remember correctly toyota wanted the mr2 to be a luxury car but then changed it to be a sports car! Also finaly someone gave the s12 some much needed love
It’s one of mine too! Thanks for watching!
3:25 you found the mf with the dream, im here
IS300 AND IS 350 are gold. 💯
please gatekeep z31 i have been saving up for one dont want the prices to skyrocket 🙏🙏🙏
I think they will stay cheap for a little while longer with this terrible economy so you got time
Fr, need a $5k vg30et
To late old dudes want 15k for a auto n/a car. In the last year prices are already rediculous
we should start spreading rumors of how unreliable they are to keep prices down
Good list I remember some of these & liking them but a lot of people didn't and now they are classics😂😂
i own an is300 (toyota altezza), i was able to get a turbo kit from a scrapped is300, and it makes roughly about 480. the only downside is that its automatic, but since its the 5 speed (instead of the 4 speed AWD variant) its able to be used in triptronic. i have one of the shifter buttons on the steering wheel linked to a 2-step, just hold it down, ramp up the turbo and let go.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING SOME LOVE TO THE NB
the thing with cars that have mismatched fenders. that "5 grand" is a hidden sucker cost.
I was glad to see both Miatas on this list. My goal is to snag one this year for a few grand.
i can find 2008-2014 Miata's all day in wa state for about 5-7k. cool cars just low hp for slides also love that over half the car edits your showing is local wa folks ive met at spirit peaks in wa
I managed to get a 1973 Chevy Nova for 2800 bucks in running condition with a 400ci SBC, a TH350, and a 10 bolt rear. You can get all kind of gems if you put in the work
Moral of the story, you can even get good ol muscle cars as the people that owned them are passing on now, and their kids/grandkids are inheriting them and not knowing/caring what they are and flipping them on marketplace.
Currently sitting happy at 430 wheel.
i had a 1985 300zx turbo, and a 350z. Loved those cars. Now that i'm older i just retired to my easy driving WRX lol.
I daily drove my Mrs when my girlfriends car when is the shop. This was also when I was carpooling with my brother because we lived and worked together. I could fight our lunch’s, two gym bags, some tools, and a passenger in my car and had a little bit of room left. The space is bad but it’s not as bad as some say
Yeah i definitely agree. The storage space is just not as easy to get to as opening a trunk
Note on the MR2 Spyder, the 2000-2002 are a lot cheaper than the 2003-2005 cars. These are the ones you'll find for 5k. A lot of the "facelift" cars are starting at like 10k
i have a spyder super fun , you can also turbo the 1zz if you don't want to engine swap
i got my sw20 for 5k 2 years ago best purchase of my life so far i love it
Awesome vid but please do more vids like this for other types of RWD cars like euro spec. There's many dope cars out there like the miata's cousin the porsche 924/944 that you can still find for around $5k
I definitely will! Thanks for the suggestion
Also the older sw20s got that snap oversteer.
True true
Usually down to user error
you know your stuff finally a good list
Thanks bro!
We just had two crazy hurricanes here. Do not buy a Florida car rn. Hell my neighbor literally drove down to Jacksonville from Orlando to sell his flooded car cleaned it to make it look mint.
Damn man. Did they give him non flooded car value?
@@hakosan86 nope sold for the regular pre flood price
another option is a lotus 7 replica, you can build a lotus 7 replica for like 3-10k and driving one will probably be way more fun than most sub 10k cars, but you need a garage, a lot of books, a lot of tools, and a lot of time
Is300 love. One of the most underrated cars ever imo
You need to make a video about potential cheap engine swaps. Like for example Nissan Bluebird with ca18det, mazda 929 with 13B, ke70 with 4age. "Cheap" and "easy" engine swaps that will make a boring daily commuter into a cheap drift track car. Thats about the last cheap way to drift or race a 80s or 90s classic japanese car under 5k these days. If you know what you are doing here you cab do it reeeaally cheap
same as the is300 but should have mentioned altezza's. i got mine for cheap has the 3sge beams motor and a 6 speed manual, fantastic car. better powertrain than the is300 if you ask me and far more common to find with a manual trans.
I absolutely love my gs400! Got it for 2500!
W list aw11 is definitely a great car but be warned if you want mods or replace trim parts the support is not really there compared to other platforms
Nice video keep un the good work
I was looking at that Miata today. Came up on my marketplace search
Finally Mr2 getting shown some love I just wish I could afford one right now😢
How far away are you from affording one?
I got a 1999 nb Miata 5 speed 10th anniversary 144000 miles with one owner for $2700. He was an old dude who drove it to work out of town for 20 years. No postings on the internet I just found it on the side of the road. Just saying if you look hard enough you can find a steal.
Totally agree
If you put all kinds of bumpers on it how do you drive it in the city? I mean any car from this collection
we increasing prices with this one 🔥🔥🔥
😂😂😂
Is there a pretty straightforward engine swap for an S12?
The miata description is spot on 😂
The Nissan Sentra/200sx SER’s from 1991-1999 came with SR20 DE’s Also the 01 Sentra SE’s came with the SR20DE RR and lastly the lnfiniti G20s aka Nissan Primera came with SR20DE’s as well
There is a turbo SW20 hardtop near me for 5k doesn't run and has major rust in the rockers it's honestly not a bad deal in today's world if you can do the work yourself
everyone forgets about the rx8 😭 bought mine for $3k, original unopened Renesis, and she’s still kicking. Fun Mid-front engines rwd car that comes with a limited slip (6 speed only option), and able to rev to 9500rpm. I beat the snot out of mine and daily it. You can find clean body RX8’s for around that $3-4k range, you just have to know what to look for when buying a rotary car
Many ppl tend to stay away from it because of the bad reputation it has of being unreliable, but again if you wanna use it for fun or project then sure but as a daily better have a second car.
hey good lookin on the lexus!!!! thats game recognize game on that one my boy!!! im gonna get one!!! thanks
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Nice vid. Very funny. Any more recommendations for performance sedans?
I could definitely make a video on the best performance sedans out there! I’ll put that on the list
Main issue with the IS300 is 90% of them are autotragic and the manual ones swapped or factory you can almost never find under 5k.
If it’s not as comfortable as the couch they have in their living room, they won’t buy one.
the MR2 was my buddy’s grandpa’s. he offered it to me for 4k before listing it on marketplace but I couldn’t afford it 😭
That Kamala brain fog meme was FIRE.
Z31 can be reliable some are cheap but prices are sky rocketing. Mines never let me down. Its not going to do what a normal sports coupe does it cant drift or handle all that well without a ton of mods. I love mine
it's sucks that we don't have this type of car here in brazil, or when we have it the price is just so freaking high
Honestly here in Canada I have only ever seen an S12 once and never even seen one for sale, they are incredibly rare. Also every car under 5k is gonna be rusted out here haha
Good list in the BMW world A E39 chassis 528/545 6 banger w a 5 speed or the 540i w a 6 speed manual. The key is Maintenance on any older car you buy.
I owned a 1987 s12 notchback in 1998. I regret selling that car to this day. I wish i could find one.
Great video but you need to do more research. The g35 does not have the HR at all unless you get the sedan variant as a 2007 or newer. The coupe only comes DE.
was that mr2 up at Berryessa? cali in the house
How much would insurance be on the is300 be for a sixteen year old in Florida
Them bimmer boys are thriving. (Iam the bimmer boy). On a serious note, you can find the 1990s and Early 2K BMWs for very cheap. Mines is 323i for $2000
theres a clean mr2 spyder by me for 4k on FB, its got damn near 200k on the engine but still
Do another video on another 10 cars for a daily under 5k :)
My Z31 300ZX was extremely reliable it had over 400k miles on it I daily drove it for 2 years and took it to 135mph
Damn man. Seemed like a great car. Still have it?
I have a Z31 300zx and I love it, I just hope the car doesn’t go up too much in value😭
I'd add the mk2 celica supra, or the ra60 celica to the list. Both fantastic under appreciated cars, that can be had for bargains.
0:33 damn bro you got the pre-order for living in 2025 already? 👀 (prob not that exiting tho tbh lol)
is a mitsubishi vr4 galant a good investment? (listed for 1,400 usd)
For you Americans it is cheap but here in Greece an 3l engine is 1050 euros per year at minimum (and prices are way higher here )
Damn man u gotta move over here man
And thanks to this video they went up above 5k ........... Thanks a lot
Really crazy story, and if you seen the before and after you will notice, is not just a car, its a dream, its like your partner,
Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck. Don't give up on your dreams! God bless you all, Sorry if my english is bad, I learned it playing Minecraft and COD on my Xbox 360.
What if... Busa swapped sw20?
You can but your not gonna get it for a budget of 5k😂
@@hakosan86 Yeah that's gonna be 6k at least. Unless you find a sw60 with a blown engine it's gonna be a little more cash.
I have to put some light here. Realistically I would never recommend any of the cars on this list. Unless, and heavy unless, you are willing to put funds into the car for an extended period of time. At $5k or below that vast majority of these cars are not worth it at all.
1. MR2 Spyder is known for burning oil depending on on model year
2. MR2 SSW. You are going to spend more money than it's worth simply due to the age like most cars from that time. Also decent examples go for way more than $5k
3. IS300. Gas milage is dogshit. The rocker panels are very known to rust. You can find good examples of this car, but do your due diligence when going to look at one(Seriously most of these are clapped by idiots. Not talking about those who use it for motorsports, but the takeover crowd.)
4. G35. Buy it from a good used car dealer. Most good ones have a reputation to uphold. That's where I got mine back in 2012. Buying from a private seller is very risky (Due to most of these, again, being used for some foolishness.)
5. 350z. Read 4.
If you like it stock just keep up with maintenance
8. Z31. As I mentioned UNLESS you are ready to put money into it for an extended period of time do not buy this.
9. 200SX S12. Not worth at that age. Parts are few and very far in between. Car will live on jackstands
10. MR2 AW11. See line 2, but more money involved
Did you call the 300zx a Chevrolet ?
You guys missed the R34 skyline GTT. They're still around $5,000.
Where do you live because here in Florida they are way more than 5k?
@hakosan86 Trolling. Got mine for 35 this may
@@professorsecret4960 i was about to say😂😂
what do you think of ke70 4age swap?
the big one for me is a Lexus cost 1.5k to 2.5k that's tagged or close enough and isn't in bad condition
bro, many of these cars like the is is around 10k as an auto, and the z and g35 and around 7-10k alot of the time, but like theyre still cheap compared to other cars tho so I aint complaining
I've never in my life seen an mr2 under 10k. I might move to the us at this point
Liked just because he mentioned the spyder
