Our food bank is like that too! Sometimes they give you things, but usually you can walk through and choose your own. It's very convenient. Definitely less waste.
It is a blessing for them to be there Yet they're giving out food that's getting ready to expire or already expired. I've been lucky so far I haven't had that resort to that. And even if I did I don't think I would go because I don't do expired foods.
