Today I went to a food pantry and went through the process. I am sharing with you all that it entailed in today's video.
I mentioned checking out ‪@weepingwillowhomestead‬ for more great content that shows her food pantry haul and how she uses it.
To understand, we have a limited budget this month so I decided to try and see if there would be a little help. Please don't base assumptions on this video alone, there are multiple videos where I have shared a lot so you can have a full and accurate picture.

You do not have to be nervous or feel you have to explain so much as to why you went to the food pantry. You are doing what is best for your family.

Okay, we need to talk sweet lady. If someone else was visiting a foodbank or pantry, would you tell them to only try and take what others wouldn't? Of course you wouldn't. It is okay to be a person who needs help. It is okay to take the help. I don't think one person is more worthy than another... that includes you. Please take what you need and accept it with grateful heart. Times where we need help teaches us so much... what more is needed, how to help others in the situation, it helps givers know they are doing good too. When you accept help, you are accepting others need and agility to help. You are just in a season of need and it is 100% okay! I hope you found a really fantastic pantry in your area. I can't speak of where you live, but here we have things like churches that give away produce, break and a meal once a week. There are churches and organizations where you can get free clothing, books and other items.... there are free roadside pantries where you just stop by and give what you can and take what you need. If you can just give or take it is all good. Find every resource and really go for as much as you can supplement. I always advise people to save the last $20 in their pocket to fill in what the foodbank doesn't give. For your size family last 50 minimum. That is for the first month... after that you plan on going and go the day BEFORE your payday. Allow the foodbank to fill the cabinets... then on payday finish filling the cabinets if possible... holding onto that last 50 in cash to keep you topped up later. Turn it into a working cycle of help received and not one of a struggling cycle of need. This makes sure you make the most of the help given and really reduces your stress. Sending lots of ❤ and good wishes for the future.

I used to only go to the pantry when I was really in a bind. When you have a low income and as many mouths to feed as you do, I highly recommend going on a regular basis. It will help you gradually have more food security and you will be surprised how much it will help in other areas of your budget. Food pantries want to help, and it looks like you found an amazing one. I used to cry when I first started going, I was so embarrassed. Now I'm grateful and sometimes can pass along some help to others. Thanks for sharing

I love Weeping Willow Homestead. She,like you, is very down to earth and works so hard to help make her ends meet. I bought a boneless pork roast yesterday, which was definitely not in our budget. It was five pounds and I will get five meals and probably have enough left to freeze for two or three meals more. There are so many things you can do with a pork roast. I Also buy big bags of chicken legs and thighs. There are usually ten to twelve in each bag. Sometimes I cut them apart and freeze legs and thighs separately. I love to grill them on the bbq grill. Since we live on social security and a small pension check, meal planning is a priority in our house. I have planned meals for all of our Fifty three years of marriage. 😂😂

I don't think she's complaining or whining she just explains that she has to have certain dietary needs.
All I can say if you don't like her don't watch her and those of us that do like her will watch her.
I help at a church food pantry so I know a lot of what is given out is sugary and not the most healthy foods for those on special diets all we can do is pass out what we are given. We are at times given fruit and vegetables but those aren't available every week

There’s no shame in going to a food pantry…times have been really hard on most of us! I’ve seen so much generosity with food pantries, and among people who share different items they are given that they can’t use. Most people don’t know that a lot of the food at food pantries is donated by grocery stores because it is close to or at expiration date, and otherwise the store would throw it away in the garbage. So, utilizing it when you need is helping reduce food waste, and provide enough food for people who need it. Different areas have different resources. Most areas you can call 211 to find social services (such as food pantries, day cares, etc) in your area if you don’t know where to find them. I’m glad you got a lot of good food! That bread is fantastic, and you got a lot of healthy things, and some fun snacks, too.

You can zest lemons and limes and freeze them flat in zip lock bags and it doesn’t take up much space, just break off what you need and squeeze them and put some of the juice in the fridge to use and freeze the rest of the juice. Depending on how much juice you get you can freeze them in ice cube trays and then put in a zip lock.

I am lucky as I have never needed to go to food banks but I have supplied large amounts of vegetables and fruit over the years. When round 600 lbs of cantaloupe melons are put into the vehicle I find places to donate them, I can only eat one every 2-3 days myself. I used to visit carrot growers and raid their piles of misshapen carrots or stock feed carrots. Perfectly fine just a slightly different shape I am retired now but still donate the excess from my own garden. Somehow I cannot grow only 1 tomato plant but need to grow 10, way to many for me!!

Limes and lime juice can be frozen at home - I'd have grabbed them. Depending on the condition of the peel of the lime, I'd either quarter the limes and toss them into a freezer container or I'd squeeze the lime juice and freeze it in ice cube trays. If there were LOTS of limes, I'd try to do a combination of both quartered and squeezed.

You have the right to take what is offered. Im pretty sure that nobody else would give two thoughts to keeping from their family to give to yours. If it’s offered just say thank you. The first time is kind of intimidating. Especially I went to a town 30 miles away after making an appointment. And they were very rude. Told me everything was put away. One lady told him to make me a box. Well I’m pretty sure he dug it out of the garbage as it was unrecognizable. But you get what you get and I still feel blessed♥️🙏

These pantry are there to help you do not have to justify yourself for feeding your family I go to them only because I take care of my grandma and we are barely making it with the price of everything I dont get food stamps I make 10 cents too much so food banks are a must for my family to survive anyway good haul hope you continue to share

Recan those things that come in the #10 cans. I got 3 of those large cans of whole cranberry sauce and I recanned them in 1/2 pints. Now I have enough for a couple of years on my pantry shelf. And they were free from our drive thru food giveaway.

My local dollar tree sometimes gets the “good” more expensive breads that are about to reach the best by date. I will get several loaves and freeze them. You can freeze a lot of stuff. You can dehydrate marshmallows also and they get like the ones in cereal.

Pantries are for everyone who needs extra help to feed their family. It would be trashed and wasted if not for people getting g to pantries and using it.There s a time in life to be a giver and a time to receive. God bless!!

God Bless You Honey, I am so glad that they decided to serve you . I have run our Church food pantry for 10 years now and I have never understood other pantrys with all their ridiculous rules .smh If you want to help feed folks then feed them ! We don't care where anyone is from or how much money they make or how many are in their home. It's hard enough for someone to come and ask for help already there is no need for further embarrassment., Sorry for the rant but this makes my blood boil I Pray that God will Bless you and your family P.S. Yea I know people will say that there are those who will take advantage of our Ministry , But we have chosen to let God sort those out

If you are offered a box of limes...or any citrus again...take them. You can juice them and freeze in ice cube trays or flat in ziplock bags. When frozen put all of it in gallon bags...use in recipes. Great in salad dressings, on fish, chicken, in soups, desserts, etc. Nothing wrong with utilizing a food bank. If you need it, you need it. We can only get commodities here once a month. If you miss it you're out of luck until next month.

Limes freeze great, whole or just the juice if you have freezer space..and just incase you happen upon a box of limes again. ;-) we can't always use a bag up, so I often freeze them before they go bad. If I have time I will juice them first. If not, I chuck them in a baggie in the freezer whole. :-) You are very thoughtful of others and kind.

The golden rule at food banks is take what YOU CAN USE.( means leave it for others if you cant use it)
Not take what they cant get rid of.

After many, many years I have learned that shame is not a constructive emotion. Treat yourself as you would treat a good friend. When we look back over our early years I have no idea how we made it financially. (Inflation was up to 14%.) I wish I had know where to go to get a little help. Things were bleak. The good news is that 40 years later, we are still here and able to donate to our local food bank. Those early years made me more empathetic. ♥

If it helps reduce the food waste without adding a burden to tax paying citizens, I'll do it! Which is why food pantries are helpful as well as the mobile food pantry. Its not meant to be a full support but suppose to help! :) I look forward to the day I can help and donate back as well.

40 years ago I believe there weren't that many food pantries or food banks around. I remember my Mom struggling for me and Dad too, but there wasn't any help around bcz we didn't live near family. There wouldn't be such a thing as food insecurity! All I can do is try to fix my little corner of the world 😊
