Just fitted my Modern Player Plus with these Lace Sensors. It's exactly the sound I've wanted, does so many genres exceedingly well. I find the single coil nature of the blue combined with the dark humbucker sound of the Dually Red makes for some great versatility, with the middle pickup being almost Strat-like. It's been hard to stop playing it and your video was very helpful in researching the pickups. Great demos and great points here as always!

This video is phenomenal, Joe! My best friend and I have been revisiting "The Bends" and Jonny's tones on there and I had to share this with him. We found a Deluxe 85 at Guitar Center for $250 and hoping to pick that up (pun unintended). Gotta convince him to get a Tele Plus next haha. Thanks for the cool tones and really helpful discussion about how the lace sensor pickups are such an important part of the Jonny sound!
I think your demo of Sulk really nails everything you're talking about: Hot Rails + Oxford Drive + AC30 = Whoa that sounds great. That's really close considering it's not really the same gear. The OD is evidently a great pedal. Dually Reds + OD + AC30 = Ok take that back those Lace pickups are the difference. Amazing how much closer it gets you when the hot rails already sounded really similar. Can see the benefit for a tone obsessive. Dually Reds + OD + Eighty Five = Jesus fuck that's literally the exact sound of the record. I don't know what you think but it seems to me the Eighty Five is almost *the* key component. Pickups and pedals get you 85% there but that amp thrusts the tone into virtual mimicry. Really impressive.
Awesome man. I did the same mod to my American tele back in 2017 using the same Sigler 920D control plate, pick guard and lace p/u’s. Wish i had an AC 30 but I’ve only got the Eighty Five (an eBay purchase back in 2002ish. Keep up the great content!
Great work. Was wondering how your new Tele would tackle that There There lead passage, and then I assumed you must have covered it before on your channel, but - gasp - you haven't! Methinks he's driving it with an SD-1...
I play in a blackgaze group, but Johnny’s tone has been super influential on me. I’m using two duallies, a Red/Red in the bridge and a Red/Blue in the neck. On the amp side I’m using a KSR Ceres, straight into a Cabzeus emulating a Jensen and a Vintage 30. With the mid hump in the pickups, I scoop the mids quite heavily. I get a very aggressive tone, but with really good note clarity, which is essential since I’m using a lot of four and five note chords, which tend to get really muddy with high gain. Johnny’s tone is legendary though, wish this video had been out so I didn’t have to go through so much trial and error - solid vid, man.
Thank you ! Most tele plus demos seem to have the audio recorded with their phone, it's nice to hear em nice and clearly. I've been wondering, is it worth modding my guitar to a tele plus if I don't plan on only playing radiohead stuff ? The internet is quite divided towards lace sensors with comments ranging from "those are sterile and lifeless" to "I've had them for 30 years and never looked back" so it's hard to tell how good/versatile they are.
Of course! You know, it’s a tough choice. I do think Laces are really unique/cool-looking and sounding pickups. They don’t really sound like traditional Fender pickups. They CAN be versatile with the right wiring (I.e. being able to split the Dually Red since it’s very dark and uniquely intense as a HB). They nail Jonny’s thing but I was actually able to get some other pretty cool tones on a cover of How Soon Is Now also… But that being said, the guitar does lose some of its Fendery/Tele”ness and gets a little more Gibsony. If you like high gain tones the Dually distorts crazy well. If you like a nice fat Les Paul neck humbucker the Lace Blue is way thicker sounding than a standard Tele or Strat neck. But then again, plenty of great, huge guitar tones were made with regular old Tele single coils, so YMMV!
@@JoeEdelmann3 Thank you ! I was actually dissatisfied with single coils in general, the only way I could manage to get a sound I like out of them is by rolling off the highs by any extent possible. But I'm also not totally satisfied with the Gibson sound, which I find a bit too mid heavy and uhhh "dad rock n roll-ish". So it was either the lace or p90s, lace sensors are noiseless and they allow me to play jonny parts as well sooooooo I hope they'll be as nice as I think they are !!
Wicked.....it’s an unruly sound that diametrically sounds so melodic and gives the listener the sense of it completely coming apart and off the rails. I’m just building my first tele and I haven’t the balls to go this far. I’ve got some gorgeous neck and body wood but stayed in the traditional lane. Kudos.... and a great distraction in the middle of chaos. So much fun it hurts. Like Andy Summers, these iconic tele sounds are so unique yet birds of a feather.
Another great video! I did the 920D full upgrade with the lace sensors and control plate. Love it. Have been playing it for a couple years now. ... I honestly don’t think I could live without the TBX tone control ... it’s such a fantastic thing. I think a lot more people would love this type of tone control if they only experienced it. Especially as you say when needing to clean up heavy low end for certain pieces or when playing certain amps. Thanks for the great videos!!!
Towards the end you comment on modding or altering the sound of a hot rails. Do you know of any articles online or in magazines or even RUclips videos which goes into more detail about this, please?
Another Lace Sensor tone god was Michael Houser of Widespread Panic, although he used the Tele Plus Deluxe through Soldano SLO 100's and Mesa cabs. If you like JG's tone check out some old Panic from before 2001.
Hi joe I have couple of question to ask. first of all I'm just wondering how that lace sensor in your tele sounds in clean channel comparing to hot rails ? and second is what pots are you using 500k or 250k ?
Hey there! I’d say both the Lace Dually Red and the Hot Rails have a dark, low-midrange, crunchy sound through a clean channel… and I’m using a 250k volume pot with a TBX tone pot!
I had lace sensors on a telly. My experience is: They sound great if you have other guitarists in your band doing rhytmic stuff I wouldn't recommend at all if you are the only guitar player, lace sensors does not "breathe"... Johnny was great in picking the right instrument for his band. Doesn't really work well in other projects
I’ve got a fender 85 deluxe and use it with a G&L ASAT classic + shredmaster and it gets surprisingly close to the JG sound without using humbuckers. I do like the sound of the lace sensors in that tele though, sounds spot on
I've been thinking about building a JG tele for awhile. It seems like if you're starting from scratch you could get a Fender Player HH tele (MIM) and then swap the pickups and electronics and maybe no routing required at all. Also, great video. I have really enjoyed your Radiohead videos especially being similarly obsessed with them but far less musically adept than you or them, haha.
I have made a tele plus from a fender modern player. The advantage is that there is very limited routing needed to the body. I also went the 920d control route and had a custom pick guard made by wd music.
The Strat and Telecaster Plus models all had, along with Lace pickups and roller nuts, a "swimming pool" route. The cavity under the pickguard was fully routed like a rectangular swimming pool rather than just spots for the pickups. I'm in the process of putting a Lace dually in a Squier baritone Telecaster, so I cut out a lot of wood while I had it taken apart. I also have an early 90s Strat plus with the swimming pool route, and I love the sound of that guitar.
What’s your thinking on a Dimarzio Chopper T for bridge? I know it’s high output but I’m not in to (IMO cheesy sounding) hard rock and they’re the only reviews on them I can find. It’s not a Lace but I want a versatile Tele that is more in to being distorted than twanged that would be happy to play Radiohead. My Lil 59s aren’t very happy playing Radiohead.
I hear good things about the Chopper! Never tried one. Also I think dimarzio makes a super distortion in that configuration as well. I think the irony is that the Lace Dually Red is kind of designed to be that hard rock/metal type of pickup also - it’s just how Jonny applies it with the rest of his signal chain, and especially how he uses its “clean” sound that’s unique. So I think if you’re looking for a pickup that handles gain in a similarly smooth way, the Dimarzios could be a solid bet.
Thanks! Yes it is the newer AC30HW2 (with the Greenbacks not Blues). I’ve never played one of the 90s Korgs, but to my ears it has all the mojo and sparkle of a classic Vox (even with Greenbacks). I typically use the bright switch on the clean channel since I like more shimmer. And the top boost channel has a nice grit when pushed and using those interactive tone controls.
Hey Joe, would you recommend getting a fender 85 on reverb? I’m thinking of getting a 85 but a little bit hesitant knowing most 85s online are second hand.
Buying used gear online is always a bit of a leap of faith, but I’m glad I got mine on Reverb! I had to quibble a tiny bit with the seller for a price adjustment since it was a little more beat up than advertised but it still works and sounds great! The real risk of course is as a solid state amp it’s a little less serviceable under the hood than tube amps.
I made a Tele Plus out of a Modern Player series Telecaster. Although I did it because I wanted quiet single coils for doing live loops so I wasnt looping 60 cycle hum again and again, I was super excited to get "THAT" tone, too.
Are both bridges string-through? If so is it possible to use the same string holes? I'm planning on doing this same thing on a Fender Meteora (Parallel Universe Model). I'm going for a more metal sound(B standard) and its a sweet bonus that Greenwood uses these pickups!! And do you know the make/model of the humbucker bridge you used? Thanks!!
Oh cool! Yeah these pickups (the Dually red especially) are killer for metal, very saturated sound with gain. The new and old bridges were both string through yes. The bridge I got was the Gotoh Humbucker bridge for Tele, and I got it from Warmoth!
@@JoeEdelmann3 Hey man thanks for the reply. Thats great to hear about the high gain. I was almost gonna go with a single Lace Red in the bridge because i worried it may have too much gain. But your vid convinced me to go with my gut and get the dual. I play alot of B and C standard stuff like Crowbar and Acid Bath. But Radiohead is my favorite band on the otherside of that scale. Was listening to Crowbar when i asked the the question and listening to Radiohead when you replied.. lol
Hi Joe, gotta ask I have had the Jonny kit (both shred and MXR SBD, 85, lace sensor tele) for a while now and I have only just managed to make it sound quite similar as it never sounded right at all for a while (regarding distortion) - weak and missing a cutting, sharp ummff sound. I realise that the one thing I am missing is the TBX, does this contribute much, do you think he uses it when he records or plays live distortion parts, or not? I am probably just being a perfectionist as many people say that it sounds nothing alike unless you mic it up. (Also I have been doing this ‘Jonny Project’ for months now and I have probably watched this video a least 100+ times so thank you very much)
Hi there! Glad the video could be of some help. I do find the TBX can definitely be helpful to give you additional sharpness/cut when you turn it up (trim some of the low mids of the Lace Red). The EQs on the shred or SBD can also help some but they’re both fairly smooth, saturated distortions so it’s hard to get them as bright as say a RAT or other Marshall style stuff. Not sure exactly how Jonny’s 85 settings, mic placement, tbx usage (or not?) and technique all combine to get that bite hes so famous for, but there’s plenty of room to tweak and get a sound you’ll dig!
I used a control plate from 920D Custom that had a 250K Bourns push pull pot (to split the bridge bucker) and a TBX (ie dual gang) tone pot, which I believe are a 250K and 1M pot in tandem for hi or low cut. I’m not confident Jonny kept the stock TBX on his 90s Tele plus, but I do feel like the 250K volume pot at least was the best choice for his darker bridge pickup sound. I briefly experimented with 500K but it was a little sharp sounding.
Great video Joe, I've watched it many times now as a reference for my Tele Plus build! I was just wondering, what pickup height do you have for each of the Dually Red and Blue? Lace recommends 0.17" across the board, and forums seem to recommend setting lace sensors as close as possible to the strings, but I just wanted to know what your preference was. Thanks!
Glad it helped! Mine are currently at just around 5/64” (both equal) to the string (with the string pressed at the final fret), which is I guess about 0.08” and would be close-ish to the spec without fretting the string. Though experimentation is never a bad idea!
Pretty nice and informative, thanks for this bro!! btw what compresor do you use? in "sail to the moon" with the tele you get a nice warm bat edgie and with denition sound.. nice.. it has compresor on ??
Glad you enjoyed it! Nope, no compressor there (or anywhere in the video except for the full band context samples, and a bit of master limiting for balancing the audio)!
Having heard a single red on its own (using the coil split on mine)…. It doesn’t really sound the same as the fat lower mid punch of the humbucker…. It is still pretty aggressive and distorts well though! Just a little bit brighter
Thanks! If I remember correctly I think everything (bass/middle/treble) is around 5 or 6, volume is at 1 (this thing gets LOUD haha) and no reverb. Sometimes a slight push in the mids. The King of Gear has a good settings breakdown on the 85 that I followed.
@@JoeEdelmann3 much appreciated! How much do you think the tele plus with lace sensors is needed to get the tone and is there anything that you can get off the shelf today that would be similar?
@@throgersrockband9927 the lace sensor Dually red sounds like no other pickup I’ve ever heard. It is SUPER saturated in the low mids (hard to get a bright clean tone out of 😅) but it really excels into a distortion like the Shredmaster and a solid state amp. All three of those ingredients really contribute something special to the sound. A regular hot humbucker like a Duncan JB would still work pretty well though, as long as you had one of the other two ingredients.
Thanks, Joe. Super insightful as usual. I have the triple (‘91 Tele Plus, Fender 85, Shredmaster) and I still struggle to dial in the tone to my satisfaction. There’s so many variables at play besides the guitar, amp, and pedal, with playing style probably being the most impactful. I think the room you play in, maybe even the leads you use all have something to contribute. Do you find that the recorded sounds are more faithful to Jonny’s tone than what you hear when you’re playing ‘live’?
You’re right, to quote David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, exact science is not an exact science 😆 the room and how you pick are also important factors. I’m sure there are also moderate (though not severe) amounts of eq/compression in what Nigel or the front of house do to the miced and mixed signal. These samples to me show the essence is there on the recording, but it does feel pretty similar to me in the room also. (I have my amps in a side room with the door cracked and PA speakers feeding out the miced up sound to blend.)
@@JoeEdelmann3 I also wonder if playing volume might be a big factor. I’ve read (maybe on TKOG) that Jonny’s 85 volume setting is around 2 or 3 and he has the Shredmaster volume on full. Last time I tried that, Mrs. Jim threatened to throw me (and my gear) out of the house 🤣 Unfortunately ‘bedroom’ volumes are none too satisfying.
Have you tried the lace Red single coils? Or the Hot Gold Single coils? Im picking both those up used and will put them in one of my strats! For recording do you think its worth getting the Lace humbuckers for a strat over the Singles? I like single coil sounds too, but Im worried even Lace Singles will be too noisy for recording. Any suggestions?
I have tried the single Red in the sense that my bridge humbucker can be split! In that mode it’s got a nice, brighter sound that splits the difference between humbucker and single and still takes gain really well. I hear great things about the Golds/Hot Golds too though. Red is still a more aggressive sound than gold which is trying for more vintage fender. I think the Lace tech of how they make the coils makes them still very quiet even as single coils. I also think any pickup, humbucker or single coil, is going to make noise if you use really high gain sounds, which is why I always keep my Decimator noise gate close by. But YMMV!
how loud do you need to crank the AC30 to get this tone? Creep sounds awesome with both the Oxford and the AC30. More true to the original than with the Fender amp. What was used in the original? And what was used in Body Snatchers?
I don’t have my AC30 very loud at all (relative to what it can do haha). Master volume and channel volume are both around 9-10 o clock. Creep was definitely the Eighty Five. I think bodysnatchers may have just been the AC30 and boss overdrive pedal though (I’ll have to go visit my friend The King of Gear to find out 😂)
@@JoeEdelmann3 Thanks for the reply. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to get an amp modeler or the real thing mainly for convenience purposes. I love the ac30 tone but I had heard you need to crank it to achieve that chime. Good to hear that it sounds good at low volumes too. Does yours have alnico blues? Is it the modern ac30?
@@jeffkung5088 mine has greenbacks actually (like Jonny’s).. it’s the Handwired series (the white ones). I think it sounds incredible and even at reasonable volumes. I’m not Brian May so I’m not looking to dime it anyway 😂
Hey Joe! I've got two questions about the mod ¿It's possible to apply it on a squier Tele? ¿Is too expensive to install the pick ups? Would be very helpful if you answer. Great video, you are amazing!
Hi there! You should be able to do this on a Squier Tele, the specifics may differ based on what model it is (standard style or a deluxe or humbucker style one). The pickup install you can technically do yourself if you know how to solder, the wood routing is another thing (some people are comfortable with it, i wasn’t). It could cost a little over $100 for those two things (not including the pickups or other parts themselves), so not cheap relative to the price of the Squier. But if you have one, you like it, and you wanna try it I say go for it!
Just a comment on your vid. Most people would be turned off by how much you talk. I personally however, love the detailed dive in your gear, as most people gloss over major build details. So while you probably aren’t for the majority crowd, I get what you’re doing, and I really appreciate it. I can’t imagine any seasoned guitar player not liking your vids. Really great detailed content
Great vid, I'm mid-way through getting the parts together for my Tele upgrade based around the 920d / Lace pickups....albeit a few other bits special treats including an epic new neck (!)....like you say probably only slightly cheaper than buying a Plus outright but in my opinion....my Franken-caster will be better anyway :-)
Thank you for this great video Joe ! Just a question, I'd like to put Lace Blue and (single) Red on my MIM Telecaster because the tone of my bridge pick up (texas special, single coil) is too "single coil" for what I do now, I'd like something more versatile. I know that it will not sounds exactly the same, but I'd like to get closer to that JG sound. do you think it could be an alternative to put a single red on Bridge, to avoid too much change on the body (place for humbucker, etc...) ? Thanks ;)
Hi there! So the telecaster single bridge pickup has a sort of unique shape which mounts it to the bridge plate with three screws in slightly different locations rather than 2 on the outsides (like the Laces or a standard strat pickup). So unfortunately you wouldn’t be able to put a single red either without a different bridge or some sort of jerry-rigged mounting assembly. But the single red definitely sounds good and is hotter and a little bit closer to the Jonny thing (but the humbucker is still pretty unique). You might be better off with something Hot Rails-like (like Duncan’s, or the DiMarzio Super Distortion T) or another hot single coil designed to fit in a Tele space. Hope this helps!
@@delislemusic6982 The Lace Sensor RED on a Tele bridgeplate is now available from the UK. lacepickupsonline.weebly.com/store/p113/Lace_Sensor_Tele_RED_Bridge_%28Red_Lace_Sensor_on_Tele_Base%29.html
Hi Joe, So a couple of months ago I had someone mod me a player tele HH with the lace sensor blue and the dually red, and the blue’s volume is louder than the dually red. Is it supposed to be that way? This is the second time it happens, the first time I could barely hear it on the amp. So got in contact with Lace and they told me the dually red may be defective and sent me another one. This time is a little bit louder but it’s still lower than the lace blue. Idk what to do lolz. Anyways, love your channel!!🤞🏾
Hey Jose! That does sound odd… the Dually Red should be plenty loud…. And kind of dark sounding bc it’s so hot/overwound… maybe you got a bad batch? Sorry !!
Back in the 60s when distortion wasn't very desirable in amp making, a lot of the amps from that era were linear volume amplifiers - that means there's no dsitrotion on any volume. Such amps are a great pedal platforms. With todays curcuit designs headroom is dependent on the wattage of the amp.
Hi Ronald! There is actually the slightest bit of what could be perceived as a volume drop, but what’s really more of a “gain drop” as that midrange saturation lessens. The Dually is just so hot/loud that even split to one Red it feels a little quieter. But not so much as to be too distracting!
@@JoeEdelmann3 thx for your answer ! I'm interested with the hot gold dual to have a fatter tone for punk songs but keeping a true single coil sound for surf/country
I have owned a 1991 Tele Plus since I think the year 2000. I bought it from a guy who bought two teles, a normal one and mine, and he never played the Plus so it still had all the tags and stickers on it. It is the only guitar I've never sold. They're excellent guitars and yours sounds pretty close.
@@JoeEdelmann3 To be honest, after playing mine as my primary guitar for 20 years now, it has just become part of how I play. I have noticed for most people, getting used to the lace sensors takes some time because the output is so high. I primarily play it through a tweed fender style amp and rarely use the drive channel, I just play hard and drive it that way. Doesn't sound at all like Radiohead, but I love the sound and the feel. Its excellent for clean tones as well, if you play really softly and let the sounds bloom.
@@cf5914 totally agreed, it’s an adjustment thing but you actually come to appreciate the sensitivity! And it is definitely more versatile than just the Jonny sound even if it nails it!
Do you find that the TBX tone pot is quite stiff in comparison to the push-pull volume pot? I've got the same control plate from 920D custom and I've found that to be the case (I've also found that the knobs are a bit off axis and the killswitch washer exposes the hole for it slightly, but I think both of those might be easily fixed).
The TBX pot is definitely a little stiff around the center detent at first, but it gets a little looser after some use. The knob may seat a little funny on the shaft of the push pull because it’s a knurled shaft and the knob has a set screw, that’s why there’s that little metal band that goes over the shaft ridges to give a flatter contact for the set screw. You may have to loosen the screw to move the knob a little flusher before retightening, but either way that’s normal and shouldn’t interfere with the knob operation as long as it’s not dragging against the plate excessively. I didn’t notice the killswitch hole through its washer though. Overall, I think the folks at 920D did an excellent job with the plate (really neat, nice wiring).
@@JoeEdelmann3 that was a quick reply! I'm yet to put it in, but overall I agree that the wiring is great. I think the knobs just need to be reseated and the washer shifted leftwards a bit. I'm sure I'll have more questions if something goes awry ;)
Hey man, I am getting Killswitch popping noise when pushed , from the 920d kit. You don’t seems to have this problem?! Awesome video as always!! thank you!!
The killswitch “popping” is actually normal if you are using it with a clean/cleanish guitar sound! Since it instantly mutes the sound wave of the guitar (by passing the signal to ground), if that sound wave was near its peak amplitude when you press the switch the effect will be heard as a pop rather than a smooth fade out. When you use distortion (like Jonny does), your guitars sound wave becomes more compressed and “square” and so you do not hear as dramatic of a noise. Try it that way and see if it helps!
Just wish Fender would do a signature Jonny Greenwood guitar. I would buy in a second.

Set reminder on 👍
Wait I’ll be at work 😬😬😬
I’ll look forward to seeing this at 2-3am then 😂😂😂
They nail Jonny’s thing but I was actually able to get some other pretty cool tones on a cover of How Soon Is Now also…
But that being said, the guitar does lose some of its Fendery/Tele”ness and gets a little more Gibsony.
@@JoeEdelmann3
Thank you !
Brilliant Joe!! Loving these
Wicked.....it’s an unruly sound that diametrically sounds so melodic and gives the listener the sense of it completely coming apart and off the rails.
I remember the lace sensor comment i wrote a year ago, it finally came true.
7:26 AHA! I knew it!.

Whoa sail to the moon AND the trickster? Killin it
Hi joe I have couple of question to ask. first of all I'm just wondering how that lace sensor in your tele sounds in clean channel comparing to hot rails ? and second is what pots are you using 500k or 250k ?
Hey there! I’d say both the Lace Dually Red and the Hot Rails have a dark, low-midrange, crunchy sound through a clean channel… and I’m using a 250k volume pot with a TBX tone pot!
I had lace sensors on a telly.
My experience is:
They sound great if you have other guitarists in your band doing rhytmic stuff
I wouldn't recommend at all if you are the only guitar player, lace sensors does not "breathe"...
Johnny was great in picking the right instrument for his band. Doesn't really work well in other projects
what kind of kill switch did he use? which one are you using?
@@isaacstanfield4743 oh interesting. I didn't realize they were swimming pool routed
I have the same amp! Except mine is more of a tribute to Kevin Shield's use of the Red knob twin, awesome lovely amp
So I think if you’re looking for a pickup that handles gain in a similarly smooth way, the Dimarzios could be a solid bet.
the edge of breakup muted guitar tones all over in rainbows man love that shit.
Nailed it!!! Great job! @Joe Edelmann what Vox AC30 is that? The newer hardwired one? How's it compare to the 90s Korg Vox?
Lately I’ve loved the middle Position of my “Jonny greenwood” tele with my lace blue near flush
It’s a great sound!
@@JoeEdelmann3 indeed
I made a Tele Plus out of a Modern Player series Telecaster. Although I did it because I wanted quiet single coils for doing live loops so I wasnt looping 60 cycle hum again and again, I was super excited to get "THAT" tone, too.
That’s awesome! They’re a very cool and unique sound.
@@JoeEdelmann3 Definitely! It justifies having more guitars, too. Which never hurts
@@thebreakfastmenu 😆 ideal guitars = current guitars + 1
@@JoeEdelmann3 Your a blessing mate, cheers.
One thing to get closer to the tone is increase the treble then it's 100% the sound
Great demo thanks!
Joe can you recommend pots and tone caps to use with the lace sensors to get Johnny’s sound?
@@JoeEdelmann3 amazing, thanks Joe! I'll give 5/64" a try and experiment from there.

Pretty nice and informative, thanks for this bro!! btw what compresor do you use? in "sail to the moon" with the tele you get a nice warm bat edgie and with denition sound.. nice.. it has compresor on ??
btw i have a fender telecaster highway one 08' and i can get pretty much the sound of jonny or john frusciante .. both main of my influences
Glad you enjoyed it! Nope, no compressor there (or anywhere in the video except for the full band context samples, and a bit of master limiting for balancing the audio)!

@@rasmusdavidandersen7195 no worries! On eBay or Etsy I believe!
would a lace sensor red single coil be good enough? don't really wanna spend that much money on dually reds
Having heard a single red on its own (using the coil split on mine)…. It doesn’t really sound the same as the fat lower mid punch of the humbucker…. It is still pretty aggressive and distorts well though! Just a little bit brighter
Now do we wanna go down the rabbit hole of different ac30 reissues an their tonal difference LOL 🙏. love the Chanel duder
Awesome job! Love your videos. What are your amp settings?
@@jimbaaab hahah yep that’s another key limitation. I can’t be blasting out to an ampitheater of adoring fans either 😂
But YMMV!
@@JoeEdelmann3 Awesome dude! Ya that makes sense for sure! Thanks so much for your feedback man! Great Channel!
The fender amp works best with the Lace Humbucker sound.
how loud do you need to crank the AC30 to get this tone?
This is SPOT ON!
@@JoeEdelmann3 thanks for the help Joe, you're a great musician, cheers!
Just a comment on your vid. Most people would be turned off by how much you talk. I personally however, love the detailed dive in your gear, as most people gloss over major build details.

Time is a flat circle
Sorry !!
@@JoeEdelmann3 it was just a pickup height issue lolz😭
Back in the 60s when distortion wasn't very desirable in amp making, a lot of the amps from that era were linear volume amplifiers - that means there's no dsitrotion on any volume. Such amps are a great pedal platforms. With todays curcuit designs headroom is dependent on the wattage of the amp.
I just did this exact same thing (down to the gotoh bridge) to my Mexican Tele. I did split the dually with a new volume pot. Nice job!
spoke too soon. You did the split too! I just need to get a 22 fret neck
Hi Joe, thank you for your vidéo ! Do you confirm there is no volume drop when you split the dual like a "regular" humbucker ?

They're excellent guitars and yours sounds pretty close.
awesome! Wow, glad you think so! ☺️ this one plays really nicely too, good solid, slightly chunky neck which I like!
@@severenr sure, happy modding!
Hey man, I am getting Killswitch popping noise when pushed , from the 920d kit. You don’t seems to have this problem?! Awesome video as always!! thank you!!
I have the same problem
The killswitch “popping” is actually normal if you are using it with a clean/cleanish guitar sound! Since it instantly mutes the sound wave of the guitar (by passing the signal to ground), if that sound wave was near its peak amplitude when you press the switch the effect will be heard as a pop rather than a smooth fade out. When you use distortion (like Jonny does), your guitars sound wave becomes more compressed and “square” and so you do not hear as dramatic of a noise. Try it that way and see if it helps!
Curiously, these are some of the same lines from an episode of Flash Gordon in 1943 when Dr. Zarkov explains time warp theory.
what are you doing at 12:50 to cut the guitar output off by tapping?
That’s a kill switch! It temporarily mutes the signal. Jonny has one installed in his tele plus as well
bro the fender deluxe 85 sounds better than the vox ac30 imo for creep.. such a full and evil sound
Are you using a vol coil split? And is it 250k or 500k? Thanks!
Yes, the coil split is on the Volume pot! And it is a 250K Bourns push/pull pot.
Dude. Awesome....
Do you think I can get the same tone on Strat with the same pickups?
With these pickups, most likely yes! They really do have a distinctive character
