Hey Kit! With the new Boox Note Max coming out, I wonder if it’s a perfect partner for the Nomad? Well, at least for those who don’t want/need colour screens? I’m excited to see what you think of it.
I find the SuperNote software cumbersome to use and much prefer the RM software and even the Scribe software. I am giving the RM Pro a shot given the larger screen, the addition of color and the front lighting. I have not tried Boox since I have iPads and see no need to get started with Android. I think that RM’s new CEO is driving them in the right direction. A new well designed and manufactured device as they can manage one, good accessories and meaningful software updates. All of this stuff is expensive, but there is always paper and pens galore available at low costs. I like personal tech and I think we are on the verge of transformational products. In the meantime, it is a lot of fun.
I’m a Rem 1 user since KickStarter seven years ago & I use my tablet almost every day for everything. It’s a joy to have & use. Unless it’s in my work bag, I rarely carry it with me because of its size so I have an Amassan A7 notepad & pen attached to my iPhone magsafe case. It’s ideal for noting down quick thoughts and reminders when I’m out and about and it’s always there when I need it. Probably cost about £10 from Amazon with a stick-on magsafe ring. I’ve ordered a Rem Pro, looking forward to its arrival. Well worth a punt given the 100 day return. Colour docs and pens plus a backlight are the big draws, as is the screen size. It’s a niche product, I’m an engineer and the ability to sketch and rub out, move things around and importantly, keep notes to hand no matter how old make my R1 indispensable. I’m not bothered about the details, it’s the fluency of workflow and undisturbed focus that work for me. Won’t be like that for everyone. I have a Plaud recorder, I thought that might replace my Amassan but it doesn’t - it’s used for transcribing meetings and phone calls.
I plan to get one device this fall. No apps or shape perfection tool seems to knock out both the Remarkable and Supernote. I plan on waiting for the next color Boox device as a do-it-all
I've pretty much decided to use my Go 10.3" as my primary, and supplement it on the 7.8" side (at least for now) with my re-purposed Nova Air2 (I added a paper-feel screen protector). I have the Nomad, but I've decided to sell it off -- I'm not wild about these devices that have closed operating systems. I'm happy with monochrome -- I have a Mini C but the color doesn't do anything for me. Also the Mini C has significant straight line (marked using a plastic ruler) distortion, especially in the lower right corner and even when I checked it flat on a wooden table -- a real PITA when you are using form templates. Some complain about all the Boox and Android icons on the screen, but those can be stashed into groups. I also reduced the number of NaviBall functions to four, reduced the size and transparency, and made them into a stack instead of a fan. I wish Boox would give us two things: (1) a Go 7.8" and (2) an optional home page interface with a choice or 4 or 6 window panes.
Was waiting for the a5 supernote successor to release, just ordered the remarkable pro because I am done waiting and have heard bad things about the durability of supernote tablets
I get reports that the colors flicker too much. It is normal for the technique, but it’s unbearable. Is it possible to fix via a firmware update? Is Amazon holding off until they get it right? (Color update the Scribe) -that would, if it’s true, be a very “Apple” move…
Hey there! Thanks for all your reviews; very helpful! I'm in the market for an e-ink device and am trying to find one that checks all these boxes. Thoughts on which might be the best option? 1) I want to use it to take notes at work so I need it to convert my handwriting to text and/or be able to search my handwritten notes easily, 2) I want to be able to read Kindle books on it, 3) I’ve heard security concerns on Boox so I'm trying to resist getting one of those as I'm sensitive to that but I may give in if it’s a clear winner, 4) I don't want to use a front light normally (so some of the color options are probably out) since I like long battery life but I want the option for a front light as sometimes I read at night in a low lit room. What do you think?
Sounds like the Supernote is you best bet. (1) Can set up a note book that automatically converts all your writing to make it searchable using an OCR engine on the device. (2) Has a kindle app. (3) Allows direct-to-computer transfers (4) Has no frontlight.
@@corwin-7365 thanks! I probably wasn’t super clear on #4 though. I want a front light, I just don’t want to have to use it all the time to be able to read clearly. I read at night in darker rooms a fair amount but during the day I don’t want to mess with it and drain the battery.
@@ksu67337 oops. I missed the last part of that and only saw " I don't want to use a front light"! *blush* Supernote has no frontlight. :-( The Remarkable Pro doesn't read Kindle books. I'm not sure about the Boox (they have a lot of different models).
I have been almost completely happy with my Kindle Scribe except for the fact that I can't add tags or keywords to pages to allow me to search my notes. I don't need complete OCR on device, but at least enough to have searchable notes. Amazon has never added this feature. Color isn't as important to me as the ability to search. So I'm going to get a reMarkable Paper Pro and see if the search ability makes it worthwhile. I'd really rather not have two devices, but Amazon isn't stepping up to the plate to add features to their OS. So if the RMPP is a keeper, I'll use my kindle for reading books and the RMPP for note taking. It seems to silly to have to have two devices.
I had a similar situation and felt I really needed to be able to search my notes otherwise I feel it’s actually more difficult to find notes on a tablet than in a physical notebook. So I returned my Scribe. I don’t want to fork over all that money for the Remarkable and want a device that can let me read and take notes on it and am frustrated feeling like it doesn’t exist.
I use GoodNotes on my iPad and as a project manager the search function is a requirement. I didn’t think the remarkable had a straight search feature - it’s why I never bought it
@@MyLifeInTheDesert you are right. You can only use Tags with the remarkable. You can add them to a page then search for it across any notebooks at the same time. I do a lot of handwriting. I don’t use typed text much when I’m thinking. So my thoughts are never converted to type. Nevertheless, handwriting helps me remember things and helps me think more deeply. So tagging will work great for me. I love the writing feel of my Scribe and the fact that it goes for more than a week on a charge. Neither of those two things are possible in an iPad. I’ve tried to emulate feel, but I just can’t. I admit to some concern though that the glass surface of the RMPP might feel similar to the iPad and that won’t be nice.
@@ceciland7773 I don’t think tags will work for me. I don’t always know what I’m going to have to search. If someone says to me down the road “you never said I had to order that device” I can search my GoodNotes for the name of the device name. I can’t tag everything. I don’t understand why this isn’t feasible on the remarkable.
