Beat Culture & the SP-404: Dibia$e, Flying Lotus and Ras G
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 апр 2019
- In the early 2000’s, Los Angeles cultivated an underground hip-hop beat culture, where every budding producer were on the same wavelength, experimenting like mad scientists in laboratories, and producing their next instrumental masterpieces.
A community formed around these artists who crafted a lo-fi, gritty sound that warbled and hissed like worn cassette tapes and vinyl. Glitched effects, samples and loops-driven along by a minimal kick/snare/hat groove-were created and performed on the Roland SP-404 Sampler.
This video shares memories from Dibia$e, Flying Lotus and Ras G but barely scratches the surface of a scene that grew from the roots of Project Blowed, Sketchbook, Boombox and Low End Theory. Now, from dedicated RUclips channels to SP-based Beat Maker showcases to loyal online communities, this underground beat culture from L.A has now found a global home.
On April 4, #404DAY, we celebrate every producer-from the lo-fi pioneers to the aspiring beat maker-that has chosen a Roland SP sampler to be your instrument and voice.
#roland #sp404 #sp404sx
I know my real heads peeped how long the video is.....Peace and Blessings to all the REAL producers as well as the Beatmakers....!
That was the first thing i saw!! xD xD
Happy #404Day!
@@rolandglobal Peace and Blessings!!!!

-OY3AH!
Props to the editor for making the video 4:04
Thanks for noticing 😎
It really is 💡
S/o 2 Dibia$e for being gracious enough to let me film him doing a Rhythm Roulette and S/O 2 Ras G It was great performing on the same stage at 808 Fest (2018) in Atlanta along with my Controllerise Family. S/O 2 Flylo for being a pioneer in this thing as well as a great inspiration. Thankful for this movement and so happy for the continued international growth of the beat culture where beatmakers/producers can get well deserved recognition Happy #404DAY
Thanks for sharing! Happy #404Day!
props to STLNDRMS + controllerise for keeping the movement going in atlanta too
@@birocratic_ Facts also to my homies Blkcubes, Micxsic and the rest of the mob
I love how roland creeps into their own product after 20 years of becoming a cult icon.
Like how Dilla is your producer’s favorite producer, these Roland machines embodies just that. Especially when many of them swear by their MPC’s and the Roland is the secret sauce. Hell even Dilla used a 303.
@@TheWutangclan1995 Man, I swear by my MPC but still... the SP's have a diferent soul. It's like you ask me with leg I like the most, I need both to walk properly.
Rip ras man. Will always be remembered
BIG UP!!! OHHH RAAASSSS!!!
What's eerie and crazy about the end of the video is that they looped Ras G's voice so as to point to the fact that he will go on forever...shortly after this dropped, he passed. RIP Ras G
Rip ras g 😭 I swear 2019 taking everybody !
WHAT? T.T ! nooooo
The question is where are they on they journeys now? Peace upon all
Iconic. If you dont know Flylo, Ras, Samiyam, Mr Dibiase, GLK, Daedelus, Lorn, Tokimonsta, Madlib, Dilla, Doom and all them ... you cant know me.
You automatically get my Love & Respect just from that list!!! I need friends/ a wife like this .
Proper list homie!!
In b4 all caps when you spell the man's name
Ohbliv
BREADBAUX damn. Sneaking Dilla in there like that. JDilla if you please. Godfather of modern deep hip hop.
Hearing flyo for the first time back in the day was a great experience. Opened up a new world of music for me. Great video. Would've been dope to see Samiyam on this too
We had a long list of people we would have loved to include, including Samiyam, but the story and community is just too big for a short video. Maybe one day...
@@rolandglobal Very true. You guys still picked 3 amazing artist for this though!
seriously. I've never even thought music could be like that when I first heard him and it was like a new universe
@@rolandglobal would kill for a full on doc. what an amazing thing that would be
A dude in my local record shop recommended FlyLo's Los Angeles to me when he saw me buying Madlib's King of the Wig flip.I popped the CD in, heard 40 seconds and was like " What the hell is this?" then the beat dropped on Breathe Something/Stellar Star and I have been hooked since.
Man Ras G and dibiase are the reasons I bought a sp 404 10 years ago. Much respect to the fellow generals from Los Angeles
Much respect, Happy #404Day!
They are everybody’s reason for buying an sp
Is the SP u bought back in the days still alive?
I come back to this video from time to time. Just to see, and hear my brethren again. And "add another layer to that sound"... RIP Ras G.
I am a Japanese. I love his beats!!! beat is a universal language! 💓💞
THE GODS !!! Flying Lotus is personally in my top 3 MUSIC ARTISTS OF ALL TIME IN THIS UNIVERSE!!! Much Love to this channel, those in the video, and everyone reading this & who is also watching this like me. I Love all of you and hope to have the pleasure of working and socializing with people like you guys soon. You are my people !!
Wordup homie!
Its rare _these days_ to read a comment like yours(on YT) but its a good reminder that even though civilization fronts civil frequently and humanity acting humane feels like a rarity, there are _still_ redeeming qualities laced throughout society.
*blessings not strssing* fam.
@RolandChannel Great tribute! Love the 4:04 duration 😉Hello to all SP404 lovers!
Back in april 2014, we had the chance to have Ras G for a party in our club/radio here in Paris. Lovely memories.
Happy #404DAY!
Wishing this was 4 hours and 4 minutes. Could listen to the OGs talk about the beat scene for hours
Was a cool little moment la beat scene I love the trip hop beats they would play for the kid’s seems so long ago ✌🏽
LA beat scene pretty much created Lo fi beats
fire
Respect STLNDRMS 🙏
STLNDRMS yr the reason I got one of these!!
RIP Low End Theory, Blessings to the Torch Bearers!
magical era
Since I was 15 these guys have been the reason I love beats. They're the reason I'm who I am. Knowing a SP 404 is what helped them get to where they're at I've been trying to invest in one for a year now (I'm just super broke) because I want to be just like these guys. I would never enjoy or appreciate music the way I do if it wasn't for them
AlimiAlpha buy a cheap phone & do it on nanoloop. All this hardware is overrated
Mad luv to these dudes, especially Dibia$se, such a chill dude, almost like he doesn't know how influential he has been man
dope to see this subculture growing
We couldn't agree more 🧡
We need a updated Roland SP404 XL with a LED Display screen and 8 track sequencer.
K Hardy oh snap got a like from Roland.
And the possibility to pitch samples without using the pitch effect!
Instead of having to resample and bake the 2nd FX into a sample to use more than 1 FX, a FX chain type option where a machine has 2 different banks for the FX setting, switchable so as to be able to, [pretty fluidly, be able to control the parameters 2 different FX on one sample (real time) without having to completely switch FX would be an awesome addition to the 555’s FX memory option.
Akai force
@@anonymousmc7727 to damn big and not portable.😂
Sampling is magic, the good things about sp404 beat in your backpack sampling everywhere.
Ras g is such a poet...
"Some people wanna have a fly outfit, i always wanna have a dope ass beat"
Man I hope they drop a full documentary on this. I do dig the time length on this one though 👌
RIP my friend. Miss you forever.🙏
Dope, interesting small insight to the LA beat scene of back then, heard the name Low End Theory mentioned a lot over the years.
Happy #404Day! We ❤ your channel.

When SP404 was released i was working for Roland from Brazil, and the first time that i saw 404 was on the pic of anime Tokyo Tribe 2, Roland and Santa Inuoe became partner to promote SP404 model when was released in Japan, bytheway released in five diferent colours, black, red, blue, yelow and the classic chrome !
I Luv so much this sampler and this change my life, all my idols use that and i'm so lucky to be living in this era of lofi beats !
Thanks for playing a part in the SP story Rodrigo!
These three guys are so special... around this era I caught Flylo a number of times in NYC and Boston and had the chance to meet him too! Love that Alice Coltrane pin he's wearing at 3:55. Dibiase and Ras G are straight-up SP magicians..
SP Magicians! Perfect description 🧙♂️
Thanks for the mini video Roland, the SP series helped propel a revolution in like-minded beat-heads and cement the idea that guys like these could make music in their bedrooms that could spread love across continents.

Happy #404DAY!

🧡🧡🧡
much respect for all of the scene! Art, love and respect!
Peace!!!!
🙏🙏🙏
HERE FOR THIS.
We are here for you, big fans of your work Sarah 🙏
ras g is a whole ass vibe
Funny enough, I never liked the SP404. I’ve always gravitated torwards my trusted friend the SP303, what I didn’t like with the SP404 is how it sounded digital when you time stretched, but on the SP303 it sounded like a warped tape. When a friend of mine(shout to Ross Da Producer) bought the SP404 I locked myself in his room for 7 days straight & churned out about two TDK 90mins tapes of 2minute beats. Aaah, the good ol days. Now I just rock it on my iPhone & my GAMEBOY DMG 1 with a nanoloop 1.7 & Mono cartridge. I’m going to make beats till I die like Dilla!!! I really appreciate videos like this cos it reminds me of how long this tradition of beat making has been going.
inspirational.
🙏🙏🙏
Loved #404 day! Good job Roland 👌
Thanks for celebrating with us! See you next year?
@@rolandglobal Definitely!

Same, positive vibes and he seems like he is just bursting with the love and enthusiasm.

I'm glad that there is finally a platform for beat creators I've been making beats for a long time and I'm grateful that we can finally share our visions
Peace to the all mighty Dibia$e!!
✌
This was Soo DOPE! Thank you!
🧡🧡🧡
Excellent video Roland people 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🔥
Thanks for watching, happy #404DAY!
Love that Ras G chopped & screwed voice
In my reckoning, the LA beat scene actually has had a subtle impact on the pop mainstream. Young producers influenced by this scene mingled in the post-brostep, trap-friendly atmosphere of soundcloud. Among them, Flume eventually rose to great significance and has since imprinted in the edifice of the top 40 the faintest shadow of sonic-freedom and funk.
MADLIB
DiBiase deserves to be here without question!!
Flying Lotus and and Pharrell my two favorite musicians
You see something with Flying Lotus in the title, its a given. You automatically give it a thumbs up!
rest in peace Ras G,forever love u
Respect to all these artists. I've known about them for a good while. And I like the style of this video. Vibesss all day.
RIP 2 RAS G 🛸🪐🙏
Didn't really know what Dafuq this calculator looking thing was in the local music shop in Ottawa. I had seen a vid of Elaquent playing and jugglin' on the 404, and i said fugg it! First piece of gear after my acoustic guitar. I remember walking out the store and the old head man commenting to his coworker in the shop ''hey steve, i wonder which generation this guy belongs to''... hehe yep, this the wave in the now. If you dig it and it sounds good, KEEP DOING IT! if not... KEEP WORKNG ON IT. Big Ups all of y'all. Keep it slappin' and stay true. PCEPCE
These the guys really putting in the work I’m glad to see them getting recognition!!
This video was the inspiration for me to start making my first beats, lol. Thank you!
I really, really wish there was a scene like this in Toronto.
fam that's what I'm saying!!! The beat scene in the GTA fuckin SUCKS lol. There's nobody out here. I'd organize shows and shit but I don't have the resources for that.
DIY. If you can’t, team up with like minded folk and then get it done. If you really want it, you can’t be stopped!
Yo! I’m out here. Let’s make it fuckin happen
Well done guys, this was shot beautifully 💪 from a MPC Live user!
Man, I haven't given my sp 303 or 404 the love they really deserve. Time to make some music this summer
FlyLo a damn snack
🤣
"...and add another layer to that sound." Great video throughout. The people who use this kind of gear have interesting thoughts!
So Dope seeing 👀 ppl in their element 🤜🤛💯🤜🤛💯🎹🎨🎛
