I love this man and his work! Herman gets most of the guitar playing attention when it comes to DF, but theres no argument that Sam is the genius behind their sound. Thank you Sam for your music!
seems a lot of people here are butt hurt/envious of this guys talent. sam seems really cool about it tho, he's just a guy who loves metal and wanted to put his own twist on it like any genuine artist would, play music they wish existed. and if you don't like it you can fuck, right off, some of us love dragonforce! you can't do that it's too fast, the solos are too long, waaah! that's what they said about every so and so great pioneering, trailblazing band. dragonforce could've tried to please you, but then they wouldn't be dragonforce, they'd be just another mediocre power metal band, already were hundreds of them out there when dragonforce got started.
the reason why I don't like Yngwie is exactly the opposite why I love Sam :) while Yngwie is full of himself, Sam is just a guy who just happens to play the guitar REALLY fast :D but the whole band are a bunch of cool guys, I appreciated that after a show they just came out of the tourbus and talked with us like.. you know... normal people :D I still have a photo with Herman and an autographed CD by Marc :D
Personally as a fan of the power metal genre I had high hopes once Dragonforce broke big in the US around 2006 that more of the really great power metal bands such as Gamma Ray, Helloween, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian and Primal Fear would get more label support and promotion to show the rest of America what great power metal is. However that was not the case. Personally I have always felt Dragonforce is probably the most limiting of all the power metal bands because almost all of their songs are between 180 and 210 bpm with a fast trot beat and very little to offer beyond that. They play well but little is left for the listener. The other power metal bands offer so much more and I think it is a shame the US never truly embraced power metal on a bigger scale.
SO FUCKING AGREE! I will say, that yes, I've listened to Dragonforce since 2003 when they came out with Valley of the Damned, I was there before Guitar Hero put TTFAF in their game, and I was there when they changed singers and all that. But, my thing is, that when people think of Power-Metal, the first thing they say is: "What's that?" And you explain it to them, and they'll say: "OH! Like Dragonforce?" Dragonforce is not the only fucking Power-Metal band on the planet. I loooooove Dragonforce, they're my favorite band. But, bands like Stratovarius and Rhapsody are such amazing Power-Metal bands. I really just feel like people are missing out on what Power-Metal has to fully offer. And I always encourage people to listen to other Power-Metal BESIDE Dragonforce.
Their newest album is a step in a more diverse direction. Ever since Marc joined the band they've been getting better.

Lol it's sad that you are not acquainted with THE EARLY USA POWER METAL scene....Omen, Jag Panzer ,Leige Lord, Attacker..I can go on with the list lol... *Such posers*
I enjoyed the interview. He is a quirky fellow. But is it me or did he seems like he was on some sort of upper? The first time I had a reminder of a tweaker I knew (not saying it was meth).
Wesley Zimmerman I went to school with him and hung out in my late teens a lot with him.. he’s a rad dude.. he sounds so kiwi even wit the return of his English accent
7:28 "I wanna bring across (live) what you got on the album" yeah? You do? Seems to me like you want us to have two different experiences. "If you want to hear the album go listen to the album!" is what I feel like I'd be told, hahaha I'm sorry I had to. They have gotten so much better and I do appreciate that HE appreciates backing vocals live. It IS important. And I'll always appreciate the more they improve live.
Lol the low key roast at the beginning: Dragonforce has such complicated and incredible music, so when I met its writer and creater I was disapoitned when didn't find someone more smart and well spoken but instead I found THIS idiot. LOL jk I know that's not what it said (quite) but it did feel that way a bit, knowing Sam.
"serious scholar of music and a real academic....." lol, you Americans are priceless. Good metal requires a sense of irony; did you expect Sam to have a doctorate,? Wtf are you even talking about?! lol
Some european power metal bands are very cool and compose beautiful music. I don't like this guy, he is a good musician but there's no point saying that other bands are 'not cool' or 'ugly'.
The bit about Manowar, "just one guy singing, where is all the power?".. well, Eric Adams has more power in his littlefinger than any Dragonforce song. Speed and Power is NOT the same, Totman, I've enjoyed some Dragonforce tunes since their debut, but they will not reach Manowar to their ancles in terms of power and quality in my ears. - Hail and Kill
WindRider he wasnt saying the band is not good or powerful, he was saying that the big chorus wasn't there. I also think like he does, when you hace multiple voices on studio you need to have those voices on stage.
tomazo tomazo fair enough, though I have seen Manowar lots of times live and they are great on stage, and I haven't heard any lack of power. Some time ago they were the loudest band out there and they do not need a bunch of samples and layers live to get the power across. I get what Sam is saying, he obviously likes it pompous and over the top on every level, but Manowar don't have to compensate for anything when it comes to their music. I really was into Dragonforce back in the day, when they released their demo and was called Dragonheart, but they have become a bit boring to me over the years. I still enjoy the songs from time to time, but it's often a lack of substance in my opinion. Sorry for this "heavy" response, i'm done now. Stay metal!
Pretty straight forward and honest guy, I like him.
I love this man and his work! Herman gets most of the guitar playing attention when it comes to DF, but theres no argument that Sam is the genius behind their sound. Thank you Sam for your music!
Yeah right, Sam is the genius behind their sound. Without Sam the is no Dragonforce, Sam is Dragonforce.
💯
You're a legend, Sam. You're probably the reason I was able to find the music that I truly love and still do to this day.
Sam trying to ignore the fact this interview was going to be unusable for a documentary
seems a lot of people here are butt hurt/envious of this guys talent.
sam seems really cool about it tho, he's just a guy who loves metal and wanted to put his own twist on it like any genuine artist would, play music they wish existed.
and if you don't like it you can fuck, right off, some of us love dragonforce!
you can't do that it's too fast, the solos are too long, waaah!
that's what they said about every so and so great pioneering, trailblazing band.
dragonforce could've tried to please you, but then they wouldn't be dragonforce, they'd be just another mediocre power metal band, already were hundreds of them out there when dragonforce got started.
5:23 "You can't really mosh to our music"
Tell that to the people (including me) at yesterday's gig in Newcastle, UK :P
DolchiO07 u can mosh during the game and edge of the world
@@tyreekmurillo4524 You guys should watch the *In the Line of Fire* DVD, almost every song the audience is moshing to it.
Last November I only entered the deathzone for through the fire and flames. I wish I had done it in the beginning haha
Every interviewer: OH MY GOD YOU GUYS ARE INSANE HOW DO YOU GUYS DO IT Just about every member: uh yeah we just kinda play music
"all a bit ugly" what a guy
Great not too humble nor aggressive and yet cool attitude x')
Drinking game: take a shot every time he says 'like'

well i can kiss my liver goodbye now
No problem, I'll keep on drinking, and compare the count to the number of how many great songs you've written compared to Sam Totman.
No listen to half of chapter 3 by slipknot and every time they do a pinch harmonic take a shot
Sam is seriously unique and underrated
Sam is a true talent
Thank you, Banger TV.
met him back in 2017. very chill guy
He’s like the Keith Richards of metal.
I thought i was the only who saw him like that
Yeah but can he play Smoke on the Water?
maybe.
This is literally the funniest thing ever. I've never cried tears of joy before this. It was a spiritual adventure.
Smoke on the water is beneath Sam Totman.
When Sam interviewed Sam
When Sam interviewed by Sam

Sam Totman is probably the richest guy in power metal
How do you think he pays for all those pinball machines? :)
This is hilarious, but also kinda sad. A lot of the people in the scene deserve more
LOL! Man, Sam took a not so discreet swipe at Rolf & Running Wild, LOL!!!!!
He kind of reminds me of Janne from Children of Bodom
they have the same birthday lol
My favourite living musician.
he looks like Mick Jones from The Clash
the reason why I don't like Yngwie is exactly the opposite why I love Sam :) while Yngwie is full of himself, Sam is just a guy who just happens to play the guitar REALLY fast :D but the whole band are a bunch of cool guys, I appreciated that after a show they just came out of the tourbus and talked with us like.. you know... normal people :D I still have a photo with Herman and an autographed CD by Marc :D

I'll have a pint of.... Guinness
He is a scholar of all things metal.
R.I.P DIO
Dont people usually mosh to fast songs? I've never seen moshing or wall of deaths during slow songs.
he's referring to breakdown riffs
I enjoyed the interview. He is a quirky fellow. But is it me or did he seems like he was on some sort of upper? The first time I had a reminder of a tweaker I knew (not saying it was meth).
fuck yeh greatest 2nd guitarist
Five dislikes? For fuck's sake, people...
And he is a Kiwi!!!!!!!
He was born in England, moved to NZ then back to England when the BLACK METAL band split
Wesley Zimmerman I went to school with him and hung out in my late teens a lot with him.. he’s a rad dude.. he sounds so kiwi even wit the return of his English accent
Idk what is he saying..i just wanna see him talking
lmao he's literally me

Bloody Kiwi 🤘✌️🏴☠️🇦🇺
what?
The experience he wants is to make accusations at them and claim they are piano players who know none of his music
Alguien cree que se parece a German :v

How many times does this div say the word “like”
To be fair, he drinks quite a bit so that probably contributed to it. He probably picked it up when he moved to London, it's quite common here
Its like "eh" in Canada. Or Dustin Johnson of golf saying, "you know?". ;-)
"serious scholar of music and a real academic....."
lol, you Americans are priceless. Good metal requires a sense of irony; did you expect Sam to have a doctorate,? Wtf are you even talking about?! lol
Ironically, Sam actually does have it. I met him IRL, he still doesn't give a shit.
HES CANADIAN GENIUS

Nailed it.
