  • Composed in 1910, "The Melody Shop is" one of bandmaster Karl King's most famous original compositions. The popular march was originally written for the "Robinson Famous Shows" circus, where King began composing and performing music at only 19 years of age. After an extremely successful career as a circus musician, King went on to start his own music publishing company (K.L. King Music House) and lead the Grand Army Band in Canton, OH. Karl King's marches capture the essence of the circus with their fun melodies and swift harmonies; and his legacy will live on in the fingers of euphonium-players everywhere.

My band is playing Cyrus The Great by Karl L. King and I was going to send this to our band director as an idea to play at maybe a slightly slower tempo. Then the euphoniums came up and went crazy. "Hmm, maybe they might have to practice". Then they came back, holy crap

Marches in this style are the original American music, these bands' job is preserving American music (and specifically military music), they know they're gonna play a lot of marches when they join lol

3:46 The conductor practically said “Y’all ain’t ready for how fast we gonna go.” Then at 3:50 that’s when all thoughts of playing this piece at a reasonable tempo went flying out the window along with every single one of those sixteenth notes. 🤣

If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly👍

Trumpet player 3rd grade turned Baritone/Euphonium player in High school, Drum Major and played in college marching band. Much deserved respect for these gentlemen. For Euphionium players the Melody Shop has been a well know audition piece....non-stop 16th notes and playing in the upper register (Tenor) of the instrument (French Horn range). Requires extreme articulation, breath control, and triple tounguing...very difficult. You are literally playing the same melody as the FLUTEs lol. Henceforth the Melody Shop. See you brothers are the next TubaChristmas

As a euphonium player in a good community band, I am trying to play that euphonium part up to tempo. I keep referring to this trying my best but it very difficult for me.

From a Euphonium player that has played this, the soli at the end is all slurred so all you have to do it’s get the fingerings down.
