    Thanks for the video. I have below questions.
    1)what is the difference between the small cell and hENB(home enode-B gateway)?
    2)Can small cell connect directly with the core network (MME in case of 4G as small cell has its own BBU) or it should connect to the macro cell and then the core network ? (I got this question when you explained different types of back-hauls)

      Hi Shreyas. Home eNodeB gateway is used as an aggregator for Home eNodeBs or HeNBs or Small Cells. It's not strictly necessary as 4G small cells can connect directly to the core. The problem is that if there are too many of them, configuration for each of them becomes tedious and time consuming. HeNB-GW takes away that complexity. It also contains security gateway that makes connecting them more secure.
      Now, what we argue is that Small Cells are all in one unit, so BBU + RRU. In US, RRUs that are deployed on the lamp posts, etc. are known as Small cells too. Basically small cells are small form factors in the USA. This is where is becomes tricky as BBU would be close to the cell site, tower, lamp post, etc. or in case of C-RAN it's in a central BBU Hostel. Again, connecting to the core can be direct or via a separate gateway for security reasons. Many different options are available.

    Thanks for the great video. I have not seen many small cells using a xDSL backhaul. Wouldn't PoE be a more common backhaul?

      Only residential (and maybe enterprise) Femtos use xDSL.

      Hi Jason, that's not necessarily true. It depends on where the backhaul is coming from and what spectrum a small cell is using. If for some reason, the small cell doesn't have a backhaul and it uses the macro as a backhaul (this operation is called relay) then it will use the macro capacity. Think of it as redirecting the capacity from one place to another. This is not common. In some cases, the small cell uses the same spectrum as macro. Let's say that is a poor coverage in a building from macro outside. Here, you can use small cell with the same spectrum. There will be some areas where there will be interference. The macro/small cell will have to work out how to avoid interference (this feature is called eICIC) and there will be some loss of capacity on both the macro as well as small cell.

    Great explanation, love how this one is... My question though is this.... if Service Provider A rents or buys a few macrocells in an area to spread coverage of one of their newly acquired frequencies... Do they have to report these rented locations to the FCC or some entity? How do they keep track of the "map" of coverage from new towers and cells? Likewise what happens if an owner of one of these buildings that the antenna are placed on, doesn't want to rent it out anymore, is there a database or something that will keep track of every cell site, specifying their exact operating frequencies?

      We don't think they have to report to regulator as they have purchased the spectrum. There are departments within the organisation who keeps track of all macro/small cells, cell id's, frequencies, etc. Sites go up and come down all the time so not an issues. Many other public organisations and hobbyists also maintain databases. Cell Mapper is one good app in the UK, assuming it's available in the US too. If you have an android phone, you should be able to download it (if available).

    Can 5G enabled phones act as small (femto) cells?

      No phones can act as small (femto) cells. In theory this is not difficult to do from technology point of view but it would be a nightmare managing interference. So you will most likely never see one.
