Pizza has ancient origins but the one with tomato was created when this ingredient was imported from the American continent from 1500 onward. The “pizza margherita” is the best known, and tradition has it that in 1889, when the royal family visited Naples, Queen Margherita of Savoy asked for a pizza to be brought to her. A pizzaiolo named Raffaele Esposito then prepared a classic pizza with tomatoes, to which he added mozzarella cheese and basil; the colors of these ingredients recall the colors of the Italian flag (green, white and red). Over time, other types of pizza with different ingredients were added in addition to the margherita pizza.
Nah, German here. Not totally wrong or right. The truth is, the tomato *didn't even arrive* in Italy *until* sometime in the *sixteenth century,* when it *was initially considered "poisonous".* Tomatoes are actually a New World fruit with wild ancestors still growing in Peru, Ecuador and northern Chile. *Germany:* *(1550/1553)* The oldest tomato illustrations were made in Germany and Switzerland in the early 1550s. The Spanish "explorer" brought them 1st to the EU continent. Tomato's original color was orange, in most cases, BUT there were also different versions back then like *purple.* > Similar to the *"Ur-"* version of the *carrot,* which was a *dark purple* color.
Italian here. You got the pronunciation of the double consonant right. The sound is more prominent (it's quite difficult to explain this through text LOL). It might seems strange but it's the same in english: you can tell the word "pepper" has a double consonant. "Peper" would sound a bit silly.
Nor how to say "knife and fork"!! Like most Americans, Connor thinks of "fork 'n' knife" (as if it's an _action_ 😂 instead of a _description_ of two eating implements?!!)
In answer to your question, Wikipedia is your friend: "Modern pizza evolved from similar flatbread dishes in Naples, Italy, between the 16th and mid-18th century. The word pizza was first documented in AD 997 in Gaeta and successively in different parts of Central and Southern Italy. Pizza was mainly eaten in Italy and by emigrants from there." And you are right, Connor, tomatoes originating from North and South America "were introduced into Italy via Spain. They were first referenced in print in 1544 by a physician named Mattioli. At the time the fruits were small, about the size of cherry tomatoes, and were yellow in color. He named them pom d'oro or “golden fruits”. " Source: Pueblo County Extension
To answer your question about the double letters like in “latte”, yes, you are correct. As for the “sound” of the syllables you mentioned, it should be noticed that that person had a Neapolitan accent, which is peculiar and different from the rest of Italy of course (we have lots of dialects which have huge impact on accents). If you watch Italian news or a movie where people speak an Italian with no accents, you can hear a slightly different “rhythm”. I am Italian, by the way. 😅
Connor, the biggest problem was not the italian man using cutlery to eat his pizza. It was you saying ‘’fork and knife’’ - you made my jaw chatter, eyes squint and muscles tense up and then spasm, it’s KNIFE AND FORK!!!! PLEASE! BTW I love your channel, you’re great! Love from Scarborough in the UK. X
Is there anything you can eat in Naples that isn't extraordinarily exquisite? Well, maybe the "trippa", and the "sanguinaccio" I wouldn't dare to try. I have friends there and I visit them whenever I can. Neapolitan cuisine is incredibly more varied than the average tourist thinks. Eating in a Neapolitan trattoria is a taste of heaven, but when you are lucky enough to try the food made by my dear Signora Pina, mother of my friend Roberto, you are already straight in heaven. Please, if you go to Naples try to try something other than pizza and pasta, because if you don't you will have missed something great.
Yes when there is the double letter you have to push more on that letter, a easy word for exercise is caffè, or tetto (roof) so you got both normal t and double t in it and can learn better the difference

You seem to be basing your opinion on the worst thing that America has done to the pizza. We use knives and forks because eating a real pizza with your hands is both uncouth and messy because you loose much of the topping as it’s more liquid than American pizza toppings and the base can’t support it’s weight. Don’t get me wrong, I like American deep pan pizza, just as I like say a corvette but I’d take a Ferrari in preference without even thinking about it. The very thin base is part of what makes Neapolitan Pizza so much better, the ingredients in the topping have such a fantastic fresh flavour, local Marzano tomatoes and Fior Di Latte, the very last thing you want is a great thick slab of bread detracting from or overpowering that flavour. While in the US, the toppings are so over processed in comparison, a slab of dough underneath is a good thing!

In Italy, not only in Naples, pizza is eaten with your hands, but to cut it into slices you need cutlery, unlike in the USA where the pizza arrives at the table already cut into slices!
Why do Americans say " fork and knife" when the rest of the civilised world says " knife and fork " !? Only America uses " cups" to measure ingredients.

I’m a bit of a pizza philistine. I love deep pan pizza, and the pizzas I had in restaurants in Italy were all thin crust. I liked them, but they were a bit fancy for me. I was indifferent to the pizzas I had in New York City. Slightly disappointed considering how much New Yorkers go on about pizza! Also, who only eats a single slice of pizza?! 😂 I had a decent deep pan pizza in Las Vegas that I really liked. But I don’t think any of them beat my favourite local takeaway pizza in my town in England for me. 😂

Pepperoni especially 🤮
An insult not to Italy only, but to a sense of taste in general

Pizza in Napoli has a soft bottom, it's not really stiff. The pizza isn't cut so you need a knife and fork to cut it yourself.
