'The Amazing Malleefowl' featuring Dr Joe Benshemesh

  • Dr Joe Benshemesh has a longstanding interest in the habitat and ecology of the iconic malleefowl and has been involved in research and conservation of this incredible bird for over 30 years.
    In this short video Joe gives an insight into the interesting life of this mound building megapode and details the unusual method it uses to incubate its eggs.

    This was a fantastic presentation. Really enjoyable narration, clearly a lot of passion but also straight to the point without too much poetry. Very interesting to hear about the radical early life these guys go through and the way the adults can manage such a complex construction project with such precision.
    Just to throw out a wacky scenario, imagine if these birds were able to be domesticated and trained to work on infrastructure projects. They are like tiny excavators, I don't think I've ever moved a tonne of earth in a day!

    They are an incredible bird and very protected these days. The issue I have is with 10-80 which is used extensively by local councils and the like which does kill them off along with any other animal that relies on a seed based diet...

      Not sure about 'very protected', a local at little desert NP told me recently about a campers dogs knocking a couple off :-(
