Dunwich - the city lost to the sea

Once the 2nd port to London, Dunwich is all but lost to the North Sea through coastal erosion with only a tiny village and the ruin of the Greyfriars Monastery behind the sand cliffs.

Is this from a gradual sea level rise, or is it just corrosion? Has it been eroding more in the last century?
