Function @ 2:05 and following. Earlier comments from minions kinda miss the point.

Just like paint by numbers. Music by numbers. Better to say play by feel than the usual saying “play be ear”. Tom says by “feel”. Personally I feel
It’s best to know at least the two inversions of the triads on string set 1 and 2, for minor and major. Those triads tell you all you need to know to do everything else. Play a chord, scale, the chord tones of the moment; in any key. And it’s easier to locate and remember like someone’s face a three note shape than a single note in a faceless sea of single notes.

@JunkYour925, this video is purely about whether it is better to think of notes by their name or function, not how they relate to each other through triads, arpeggios and scales. Those things are of course important to learn to visualise the fretboard and put the notes in context as you say :)

I'm sorry but i learned absolutely nothing from that guy or did i miss something?

@robertalbert6175, if you took away from this video that it is important and beneficial to learn the function of notes, just not the names, then you've learned something very important. It's then up to you to do the work :)

The guy never explained anything about what those functions where and how to use them in your guitar playing.

I was just reading through the video description again before the comments to see if I misunderstood. But no, you summed it up perfectly - it explained nothing. Click bait title.

Ummm, I'm pretty sure it clearly explained the difference between learning note names and learning note functions and the benefits. It's not a matter of how to use them in your playing as it is more about how to learn notes via the relationship they have at any particular moment. This will allow you to use the notes you already do in more melodic and deliberate ways. Of course, a single RUclips video is not going to do the work or you :)

Clickbait title?? I'm pretty sure the video clearly demonstrated the difference between learning note names versus note functions and why you want to learn note functions in addition to note names, hence how to learn your fretboard. Not sure what is clickbait about that.

I wouldn’t call it clickbait, but I do agree for a 12m video it explains very little. If you talk about functions you need to talk about tension and release and let us hear those functions. The why could be way better illustrated. Same for his 3nps scale video. The why is essential.

I am ill right now but when I am liberated I want to concentrate on the intervals ... from the 6th string C ... across the neck ... etc. etc. in one spot ... as a apart)
