Good point about ensuring the valve cover is centralised by the engine frame bolts on eithee side. The first time I tried to remove this cover I could not remove it until I realised that the engine was not sitting centrally. If the engine is not central and needs to be nudged to one side then ensure that all hoses etc are looosened, otherwise you might crack the thermostat, radiator brackets, etc. And, if the engine is moved then take a note of where it was and ensure it goes back in the ssme place (count number of exposed threads on bolts either side before moving) because that can alter chain alignment; basically, the engine was where it was for a good reason!
Hi, my 7r is 2002 I have had it since new, the engine has done 18500 miles and it quiet but recently I have heard a noise which I think is coming from the cam chain and that possibly the cam tensioner is worn. Have you come across them wearing out and what do you think of the manual tensioners or should I stick to an original Kawasaki one. Thank you and great video.
Always stick with kawasaki. Unless you have a pretty modified emgine. Idk. I have a J model with around 20k miles and everything is fine with the engine. Zx7r are notorious for a loud valvetrain. Not saying there isn't something lose in your engine but even my 03 has slight valve noise
Thank you for such a quick response, it is service time anyway so while its stripped down hopefully I'll be able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Thanks again for the advise and keep filming more zx7r content 👍😎👍
Hey Bro, first of all, dope Video. Helps me a lot. Thx. But I have a question. When you pause the video at 4:36 you can see that you measured for IN 1-1 a clearance of 0.10 with a 2.95 shim and you want to go for a 3.00 shim and adding 0.5. So you will end at a clearance of 0.15. Thats still below the lower limit of 0.17. Can you tell me why you have done that? Greetings from Germany
@@sunsetsportbikes9435 okay maybe I have seen to much numbers and have made to much measurements in the last couple of hours and my brain is just fucked for today, but do you agree that when I want to make the clearance bigger, the shim has to be thinner and vice versa ??🤔🙈 So in your example at 4:36 IN 1-1 with a measured clearance of 0.10 and a 2.95 shim, installing a 3.00 shim will not let you end at a clearance of 0.15 but instead at 0.05 ? Sorry for annoying you but I’m a total looser with my math and just want to make sure.😄

Really wish I could find a video or information on how exactly your supposed to even measure them. I’m stuck. I have the service manual and everything I need but I just don’t get how I’m supposed to measure correctly. I got the cyl #1.4 at TDC lined up correctly at the bottom 6 o’clock mark, but I can’t get any of my step feelers to fit . Also says crank the engine 360 degree while your taking the measurements, I’ve been stuck trying to figure this out for the past 7 hours at this part 🤦🏻♂️. I got a 96 P model. But all I can find is guys taking measurements of even older 7R’s. literally read the instructions back and forth like 100 times by now but I feel there a bit vague and the description and pictures kinda suck 😕
You dont need to find TDC on any of the cylinders to take a valve adjustment. You just need to Make sure your cam lobe isn't pushing down on your valve spring. Easy as that
Thanks a lot man. See that makes sense to me but the manual I felt was totally messing with me when it brought up the TDC while turning 360 and then told me what valves to measure but for me it’s the complete opposite side as well. I’ve never done this befor and I’m a new mechanic. Still in trades school. But Thanks a lot for getting back to me in a very timely manner I really appreciate it. I was definitely over thinking the situation but I definitely appreciate your help man. Now I can keep what ever hair I have left from all the ripping out I did lol your a legend dude 😎👉🏼
Well there is one more thing. Kinda left at another dead end here from thanks to the manual again. Do you have any idea how to take the cams out lol? I have the tensioner removed. And I’ve been trying to gently roll them out of the chain for awhile here now I get so close but im a little nervous about damaging anything if I give it that last little bit of convincing. You got any tricks for this?
@@andrewlawson3798 first make sure the intake and exhaust line match up. After they do I just grab the far side of the cam and pull up and pop the chain off the sprocket.

Remove the cam chain tensioner
Then the cam caps then the cams can be removed
