With unfettered access to the Zappa family trust and all archival footage, ZAPPA explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time. Alex Winter’s assembly features appearances by Frank’s widow Gail Zappa and several of Frank’s musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others.

The film confirms all that I write in Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa - Ruth's emotional connection with Frank, Gail's pain dealing with Frank's infidelity, Frank's workaholism and more, stuff I witnessed while living and working for Frank 1968-1971.
So very glad I backed this crowdfunding campaign. The sheer volume of Zappa content (audio and video) recovered and restored is staggering. It could be used for albums, videos, or innumerable other future projects.
Just watched it today. So good. Incredible footage. Very emotional at times as well, but that's expected. Personally, I think it's such a tragedy that despite how intelligently advanced Frank was, so many people never took him seriously because of how abstract and "goofy" his music was. Frank was a genius.

Saw them on Thanksgiving Nite in '80. It was the midnight show and I went with my buddies and we were tore up and just loved the best show ever!! The best!

I've got to see this. I saw the Mothers during the Absolutely Free and We're Only in it for the Money days. It was one of the best shows I ever saw. Having said that, I found out that he really never shared any of the wealth with the band and only paid them Musician's Union scale, like about $250 per week at the time. He made millions. That was not too cool, and I wasn't too interested when he went fully instrumental, but that was good too. I love hearing how Philharmonic Orchestras around the world have been performing his works. It sounds JUST like a Mother's Record, without the singing.
