As a game designer, that team-up mechanic is extremely fascinating to me. It has the potential to create some crazy gameplay variety, but at the cost of some huge risks: players feeling like they can only play a hero if the team-up is available, players getting mad at teammates for not picking a hero that creates a team-up, team-ups being generally extremely hard to balance because they can't be easily accounted for, etc. The only solution I can think of is to create a truly insane number of team-ups so you're usually benefiting from one, then ensuring each and every one is balanced enough to feel viable. Much easier said than done! As cool as the mechanic is, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing gets scrapped before release.
I think it could be really awesome if the game encouraged people to run Teams of Characters associated with each other. Like imagine if every character is apart of the Mainline Avengers. Instead of just two characters getting a buff, it's everyone on that team and they just get a smaller one to compensate. Hulk and Wolverine getting the Fastball Special together seems like a no brainer. A Hulk being able to just use a Wolverine player as a high damaging projectile that enables them to also close the distance could be devastating. not surprised at all at the weakness of melee character. The voerwatch devs wanted genji to be primarily melee but it was too hard to balance, so they gave him his ult and shurikens

As a veteran Overwatch player, I’m looking forward to trying this game and I welcome more competition in the industry. Both of the dev teams can learn things from each others’ mistakes and will try to outdo each other to get more players. Kinda like how Apex’s pinging system was adopted by every other shooting game afterward. More competition in the industry will always benefit the consumers
4:35 I will say I’ve seen some pro genji’s getting the hang of spiderman and absolutely deleting people, and some hulks learning how to dive effectively and really pressure people. But bp seems a little weak for sure. And the melee’s have a surprisingly high skill floor
It's the usual Doomfist, Genji, Hammond, etc.. these kind of dynamics, characters who are super demanding, but they can delete people. However, as a Doomfist masochist, it's frustrating how you have to work twice as hard to generate the same numbers of a Orisa. Same goes for this game it seems, you have Spiderman moving around like a thunderbolt and maybe killing one or two opponents, at the same time you have the Punisher just firing a machine gun and killing the same two opponents, lol it's a messed up concept, it will never be truly balanced, people only keep playing with super demanding characters like these because they enjoy the unusual gameplay, but the game itself does not reward their efforts, Overwatch "2" is all about rewarding low skill, most likely this Marvel Rivals will be the same thing... I think this is a defective design, but they have to attract new players somehow, so we will have plenty of people struggling with Spiderman, while Scarlet Witch just kills everyone with auto-aim like Moira, same bullshit, different game
its necros, he found a one shot combo on spider man which is pretty similar to genjis one shot and ngl as an genji player he’s pretty similar to black panther and spider man or at least you can play them like you would play genji and at the end of the day genji players are already used to playing characters like that, high mobility, fun, but weak characters, that’s also why doom players would probably also find a way to make them work
That first person vs 3rd person rant just got a sub out of me lol I told so many moba people stfu with the same reasoning back when smite was first announced and they lost their shit over it not being birds eye view
I felt like this one of the first review were I felt no inherent bias one way or another. You spoke about how you felt but acknowledged that it has room for improvement like an alpha should. I'll be back to watch the beta review if you drop one.
The third person aspect is the best part I think of Marvel Rivals, imagine playing Hulk in first person it just wouldn't feel right, there are other characters as well but my main point is I want to see these heroes/villains in third person it just makes sense.
I find it so nuts that way back any team based hero shooter would have been a Team Fortress 2 killer. Heck, even Overwatch was labeled that at one point. And now, with so much time having passed (and TF2 being in a state of neglect), now they're called Overwatch killers.
This game cherry-picked the best aspect from the best shooters/melee games to create the best possible version of the genre. You can see influence from Overwatch, Paladins, Borderlands 3, PVZ Warefare, etc. They did NOT hold back. Every single character feels as if they could be staring in their own campaign game and i really really like that.
It's awesome, the fact you can swing around with Spiderman, the animations looks similar to the PS4 game in a hero shooter, lol that's crazy, hope the engine is robust enough to allow Spiderman to wall ride sideways (he can already run in straight lines), you can literally reenact the PS4 game, swinging, wall riding, but instead of punching random thugs, you will punch goddamn Magneto
It should be the entire game. They could add in an arcade mode for the worthless casuals that want to play without building an actual well-rounded team.
@@DBTHEPLUG The way I see it, the normal mode of a game is for the casual players, so they can just have fun with the game they want to play. Ranked, literally the mode for people who give a shit about their k/d ratio and dumb shit like that, is where the role queue should reside, because that's where a balanced team matters. The normal mode, nobody should be giving a shit, most people just wanna have fun in the game. Are stupid team decisions gonna get made, probably. That's why it'd not be in ranked. Doing it for the entire game is stupid though, a lot of characters that people like are gonna be put in the same class, a lot of people are gonna want to be strikers and defenders. Probably not supports nearly as much. There's a reason both usually exist, one is for the people who want to fuck around, the other is for people who just want to win and that's it.
@manicbeyond Nope. Casual game mode is for people who want the ranked experience without them having to worry about losing their ranks. Imagine not wanting to play ranked, but the casual game mode isn't the same as ranked and is more like a party mode...
Your take about role queue is fair enough, I give you that. The initial footage looked so chaotic, as a traumatized Overwatch player, I immediately reached the conclusion that lack of role queue is the reason why the game is so unbalanced and crazy looking. And hell, even with role queue Overwatch "2" is a goddamn abomination anyway... but yes, it's a fair point, the game is on alpha, people are going to test stuff, play all the characters they want, etc.. but I hope when the game is close to release (a shame it will take at least 6 months or so), the devs apply role queue and balance the game accordingly. There's many reasons why Overwatch died and the lack of balance and horrendous matchmaking were at the top the list, if this Marvel game somehow mitigates those issues at release, offering a enjoyable 6v6 experience for all kinds of audiences, this game is going to become a popular phenom
I play the game and immediately feel in love with it. The chaotic neutral gameplay is what I so thirst for after 8 years (7 years OW1 and 1+ years OW1.5) investing my time in Overwatch
Which is awesome, lol Dr. Octopus mechanical arms are way stronger than Spiderman, but he moves around like a pest, so it doesn't matter. I am super curious to see how they are going to design Wolverine, translating his ferocity to a game like this. Overwatch was able to do something similar with Doomfist, this character can hit you really damn hard, maybe Wolverine will be like that, maybe Colossus, etc.. lot of potential for cool stuff

The role queue is what really kept me from getting back into Overwatch years ago. Overwatch 1 on launch was ridiculous fun. Then they started nerfing everyone and limiting ridiculous team comps. It just felt really bland after all of that to me
People don't play games like these in a "free flowing" way (that would be great, but sadly it's not the reality), they are going to find loopholes and abuse the system. It's not fun when you face the same exact teams over and over again, no role queue actually incentivizes stagnancy. Most likely this game will have a "free for all" mode, but the main "competitive" modes will feature role queue
I like how when describing how groot is nearly impossible to kill you described the oak from pvz battle for neighborville, except that one usually has 3 healers strapped to it
@@tamas8950I think it's meant to highlight that the devs are very willing to explore the fun mechanics that every character can bring to the game as opposed to making one dimensional and easy to balance kits.
Honestly, role queue was what made me finally quit overwatch back when the feature launched. It sucks to not be able to play who I want especially in casual without having 30+ minute queue times. Hearing overwatch players complain about it not being in this game is hilarious to me.
The original idea was to swap between the two thumbnails intermitently as a funny bit, turns out people do not like funny bits and wanted my blood, so it will remain for the forseeable future
we have ptsd because of goats, and trust me, especially if marvel rivals devs are anywhere close to blizzard people will start begging for role queue as soon as they find an equivalent to goats
NGL I love the third person because the one thing that annoyed me the most about Overwatch and Apex Legends is that character skins aren't visible to you. Like sure the FP view models have changes, but I bought the skin for the whole drip, not their arms.
I am actually genuinely excited to play this game! I personally like the 3rd Person perspective both because it makes playing flying heroes not only feel better but also look better, and allows team ups be seen by the player. Also you can actually see your favorite heroes and any cosmetics for once, instead of seeing it in a 4 second transition cutscene and then the victory screen if you do win a game (no shade to FPS games I just find 3rd person to be very interesting)!
The "Team Up" mechanic reminds me of a similar mechanic in the mobile shooter "Frag", where if you have two specific characters on your team they perform what's called a "synergy" (iirc). It was completely and utterly busted there but it might not be here in which I'm glad since it's actually a pretty concept for a class-based shooter
to the comment about role queue, that was literally invented to prevent overwatch from killing itself. if the game can actually function without forcing players into a set of roles, I’d call that an upgrade
The Team Up mechanic seems like it will likely cause problems in the future. It significantly limits design space in what they can put into it, and it heavily restricts team comps by forcing certain pairs. Team sizes being 6 does mean you have 5 chances to get your other half, but as the roster expands this will likely get harder and harder to manage. Then there becomes the problem of team up abilities make or breaking characters, if a character is unplayable without it then its completely reliant on someone else picking the other half to even have a chance of seeing play, essentially making character decency dependent on another.
It's tricky, but I think this feature will remain a thing because team ups is one of the most popular comic book gimmicks. Buffs and nerfs all the way, until the character feels fun to play regardless. I think Spiderman is already a positive example, because he functions well by himself (if you are a masochist, in other words, Doomfist players, Genji, Hammond, etc), but he will have team up abilities with Venom, Peni Parker, most likely Spider-Gwen will show up, etc that spices up his "kit" a little bit more, but the character remains a valid pick if there's no other Spider people around (there's also some surprising dynamics, Mantis of all characters, she has good synergy with Spiderman)
As someone who's played Overwatch pretty much since release and has scrimed with pros. Role queue sucks. I also disliked the restriction to one version of each hero per team especially when we had a much more limited selection of heros. Both of these just remove player choice and creativity causing the game to become stale.
I always had the two thumbnails and thought it would be a funny bit to change between them, turns out people found one of them much less funny than I did
Hey now hold on a second, I could've sworn this video had a slightly/VERY different thumbnail. Either you changed it, or I need to get better medication, and the voices seem to incline towards the former.

This game is dope as hell, especially the team up boosts, I never even heard about it before this video
I love how the devs really tried hard to make the character don't fell like a character from overwatch, the skill set from each character are either a mix from abilities that are similar to abilities from different characters from overwatch or are totally original
Clickbaiting with that thumbnail is really annoying lol, next time don't mislead people like that, you're driving engagement for this game down

omega clickbait though it was a good review
@@Swuh Yeah, I loved the video! It's just that the clickbait is leaving a wrong impression on people's mouths. It's very bad for the game and it can legitimately impact the people's view before it comes out.

The people who complain about role que literally were not there for the first couple of years Overwatch was out. That's what Overwatch's foundation was literally built on was being able to change to whatever you or your team needed to counter and win.
OW2 players trying to ruin a good game before it becomes its primary competitor lol.
Yeah, like, you weren't even there for Overwatch and now you want to bring the worst thing about it here? Nah, get out of here.
I was there since May 2016 and role queue definitely was a great change, as was 5v5. Besides that, they f'ed the game up, so I don't even play that crap anymore.
Untill people find the goats equivalent and people beg for role que
@@Tatercon Believe it or not, GOATS was balanceable before taking the nuclear option of forcing role queue.
But as demonstrated with the format change to 5v5, the OW balance team has a knack for taking the nuclear option over just nerfing the characters that enable the problematic comps in the first place.

I remembwr when hero/class shooters were called Tema Fortress 2 killers. Surprising that theyre now Overwatch killers, when Overwatch kept doing everything in its power to kill itself since game 1.
Third person is good for melee combat, i like it.
Definitely, just wish some of the melee guys were a bit better
not surprised at all at the weakness of melee character. The voerwatch devs wanted genji to be primarily melee but it was too hard to balance, so they gave him his ult and shurikens
He needs to watch Necro( aka the genji main) playes spider man. He found how to do like a near oneshot combo with spider without the ult
knowing Necros you probably need ridiculous mechanics to even make it viable though
@@Grizzy6122 he basically shoots them with a web, string them closer, uppercut and melee one or two times for lower health characters and get out with the web swing, wait for cooldowns to disapear and do it again
i mean necros is a genji otp, hes used to play characters like that lol
@@Grizzy6122he plays spider man pretty similar to genji ngl, you hit the webs, “dash” to them, upercut melee and they die, which is basically the genji combo
I think a good way to buff all the melee heroes is increasing the base movement by 20% .
i love how you said a character isn't like pharah, so you just described echo instead lmao
I think this is a defective design, but they have to attract new players somehow, so we will have plenty of people struggling with Spiderman, while Scarlet Witch just kills everyone with auto-aim like Moira, same bullshit, different game
its necros, he found a one shot combo on spider man which is pretty similar to genjis one shot
and ngl as an genji player he’s pretty similar to black panther and spider man or at least you can play them like you would play genji
and at the end of the day genji players are already used to playing characters like that, high mobility, fun, but weak characters, that’s also why doom players would probably also find a way to make them work
The art style is super cool and eye catching with the colors and distinct designs of the outfits
That first person vs 3rd person rant just got a sub out of me lol
I told so many moba people stfu with the same reasoning back when smite was first announced and they lost their shit over it not being birds eye view
I felt like this one of the first review were I felt no inherent bias one way or another. You spoke about how you felt but acknowledged that it has room for improvement like an alpha should. I'll be back to watch the beta review if you drop one.
If i get a code and they change enough will be sure to review it
**Add Venom to the game** that aged well.
The third person aspect is the best part I think of Marvel Rivals, imagine playing Hulk in first person it just wouldn't feel right, there are other characters as well but my main point is I want to see these heroes/villains in third person it just makes sense.
7:18 Role que is what killed Overwatch
Love that you point out the issues and say "it's an alpha"
because for some reason people aren't treating this game like it's in alpha...
I would like for there to be a random heroes mode like in overwatch.
that would be super fun
MILKMAN YOU ARE BACK!!!
I was working on a long ass video but figured I'd upload this real quick in the meantime
The team up mechanic reminds me of marvel contest of champions synergy and that made the game much more complex so I’m excited to see how it goes
Team-Ups go all the way back to Ultimate Alliance, interesting that it keeps popping in other Marvel games tho
Bruh people are saying that the marvel heroes in marvel rivals are ripoffs of Overwatch heroes when it’s been the other way around💀
Role queue should only be ranked for these type of game, if at all TBH
@@DBTHEPLUG yea see this attitude is why competitive games die
@manicbeyond Nope. Casual game mode is for people who want the ranked experience without them having to worry about losing their ranks. Imagine not wanting to play ranked, but the casual game mode isn't the same as ranked and is more like a party mode...
@@DBTHEPLUG nope that’s what ranked is for, if you want to practice scrims, there’s custom games for that

"Adding role queue would take away the creative freedom-"
*The same 5 Brawlers on my team EVERY damn game with like a singular teamup.*
9:54 your wish was granted
Thanks for making a proper review. This is fantastic.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
I play the game and immediately feel in love with it. The chaotic neutral gameplay is what I so thirst for after 8 years (7 years OW1 and 1+ years OW1.5) investing my time in Overwatch
5:05 never heard a more accurate description of spider-man 💀
Which is awesome, lol Dr.
I love that you changed the thumbnail from 1 star to 5 star didn't see it till now

Rocket and Groot having a team up bonus is narratively awesome and I love this idea
Idk if this is just me but I feel like people are automatically hating on this game cause of how bad marvels record has been recently.
The role queue is what really kept me from getting back into Overwatch years ago. Overwatch 1 on launch was ridiculous fun. Then they started nerfing everyone and limiting ridiculous team comps. It just felt really bland after all of that to me
I hate role queue removes player expression just for dumb eSports balance
People don't play games like these in a "free flowing" way (that would be great, but sadly it's not the reality), they are going to find loopholes and abuse the system. It's not fun when you face the same exact teams over and over again, no role queue actually incentivizes stagnancy. Most likely this game will have a "free for all" mode, but the main "competitive" modes will feature role queue
I like how when describing how groot is nearly impossible to kill you described the oak from pvz battle for neighborville, except that one usually has 3 healers strapped to it

THE THUMBNAIL CHANGED LMAOOO

we have ptsd because of goats, and trust me, especially if marvel rivals devs are anywhere close to blizzard people will start begging for role queue as soon as they find an equivalent to goats
NGL I love the third person because the one thing that annoyed me the most about Overwatch and Apex Legends is that character skins aren't visible to you. Like sure the FP view models have changes, but I bought the skin for the whole drip, not their arms.
WAIT THEY GOT THE MOTHERFUCKING PUNISHER IN THIS GAME??? I GOTTA GET IT
Punisher looks like Marcus Fenix and I can't unsee it.
This looks like the type of game i’ve wanted for a long time
Ah finally, the real overwatch 2😌
I am actually genuinely excited to play this game! I personally like the 3rd Person perspective both because it makes playing flying heroes not only feel better but also look better, and allows team ups be seen by the player. Also you can actually see your favorite heroes and any cosmetics for once, instead of seeing it in a 4 second transition cutscene and then the victory screen if you do win a game (no shade to FPS games I just find 3rd person to be very interesting)!
I don't care if this wins, I just need overwatch to lose.
You know as soon as the game comes out, they're adding deadpool and wolverine. Gotta get that movie tie-in.
I'm glad it's 3rd person. I always hated the fact that Overwatch was 1st Person, cause I could never fully enjoy the skins I'd get. (for free)
I'll take every PvZ Garden Warfare reference that I can. Those games is too underrated on the internet.
to the comment about role queue, that was literally invented to prevent overwatch from killing itself.
if the game can actually function without forcing players into a set of roles, I’d call that an upgrade
"add venom to the game" you'll never guess what happened today...
The game isn’t even close to coming out yet… to be honest I wouldn’t want people trashing my game before it’s out too
if Deadpool isnt in the SHOOTER GAME, i wont play
I love the thumbnail switch from 1 to 5 stars
I thought it was humorous
As someone who's played Overwatch pretty much since release and has scrimed with pros. Role queue sucks. I also disliked the restriction to one version of each hero per team especially when we had a much more limited selection of heros. Both of these just remove player choice and creativity causing the game to become stale.
Lmao the thumbnail change, yeah idk what you expected the reaction would be from the original one
