    Jack just nailed this role! - I love how his Joker could be charming - still sees himself as a ladies man - he can be both goofy and playful with the gimmicks and pranks at one moment - but turn on you on a dime - become very violent with a sadistic sense of humour - I personally find that ‘unpredictability’ the most scary and unsettling!!
    Heath was smart and scary - but never goofy - none of the pranks or gimmicks - you would never see him as anything but sinister and evil - anything but a threat
    Phoenix’s Joker didn’t even understand the concept of how jokes or humour worked
    I’ve always loved Jack’s version and to me it’s the most comic book accurate interpretation of the ‘Bronze Age’ Joker I read in the Batman comics I grew up with in the 70’s and 80’s
    He’s my favourite silver screen Joker
    The actor himself is a God - there will never be another Jack Nicholson!!!

      I think that a lot of people now realize, thirty years later, that Nicholson’s Joker is the definitive Joker. Ledger and Phoenix did variations on that character…but they weren’t “the Joker”. As you pointed out, they were generally too dark without the humor necessary with that character. Nicholson IS the Joker because he’s one of the very few actors who could pull off such a tight rope act of a performance. It was cosmic timing and the greatest inspired casting for a film ever.

    • @Aivottaja
      @Aivottaja 3 года назад +8

      There's yet to be a live action version of the Joker that's truly loyal to the source material. Ledger emphasized Joker's creepiness too much and he wasn't a guy who fell into a vat of chemicals.He had no fun.
      Nicholson was closer to it, but he was still a fifty-something, pudgy guy who had a couple of prank gadgets on him. He was more like an unhinged gangster. Leto is just the definition of "trying too hard". Phienix's Joker is is not bad - as long as you don't think of him as The Joker. It's more like Taxi Driver, but instead it has a clown.
      The Joker should be funny, charming, flamboyant, but also an unpredictable murderer. Like Mark Hamill's voice work come to life.

      @@bigblueassbaby9074 - The man himself is allegedly extremely shrewd when dealing with studios (and also remarkably supportive and kind to other actors, but that's an aside) - from his perspective he was taking a risk because in 1989 most people's awareness of Batman came from the '60s TV series, and this movie was essentially pushed hard as WB's blockbuster for that year - it was never going to flop, but it wasn't outside the realm of possibility that it could be edited into a campy mess (a la Schumacher), which could significantly harm Nicholson's career. By engineering that deal, Nicholson effectively told the studio two things; firstly that he was all-in and willing to stake his reputation on the movie; so they'd better hold up their end of the bargain and take it as seriously as he did - and secondly that he was going to secure himself a sizeable payday whatever happened, and every cent of that payday was coming out of their pockets, so if they wanted to make maximum bank, they'd better make him look as good as he made them look.

After the 1989 movie, people like Mark Hamill, Heath Ledger and recently Joaquin Phoenix pretty much took what was pretty much blueprint of Jacks version of the Joker and put their own spin of it. And now, the Joker is one of the most recognizable villains in comics and movies.

    Jack made 60 million for this. He also said it's one of his favorite roles. At one point he watched it once a week for a year bc he loved watching it so much. I'm sure the 60 mill helped. Lol. He got a % of the back end & % of the joker merchandise. They wanted jack so badly they kinda pissed off robin William's. They went to robin asked him to do it & he said yes they went to jack & said " ok if u dont do it robin said yes & jack agreed. " robin was so angry he was just used as bait to get jack. So when WB asked him to play the riddler he refused. He said he would never do another WB film until he got an apology. It is a great blue print bc as they say they got marlon brando by offering him a % of the gross. Marlon to this day holds the record for most money made for least amt of shooting. I think they paid him 4 million in 1977 $ & 12 % of the gross which the film made over 250 million. So I think I read in my sons recent guiness book that he made like 30 million in 1978 for 7 to 10 days of work. Remember hes only in the beginning & what was cut bc in the 2nd film they tried to use his footage as it was intended but tried to screw him out if the back end of the 2nd films gross. Yes everyone signed on for 2 films as they shot them both at the same time & had to bc of time finish up the 1st & had 75% of the 2nd in the can. Anyway the point is it's a good formula when superman & batman were the first comic book films to get a brando & later a Nicholson bc it gives it instant clout. So they were worth their weight in gold. Without nicholson no way would people been as excited. I mean jack is the joker. Literally.

    I was six years old when this movie came out in 1989 and it was instantly by far the best movie I had ever seen at that time and I became a huge fan of Batman, and I absolutely loved Jack Nicholson's role in that movie, it left such an impression on me and set a standard for what the Joker should be. I did watch the Adam West series of Batman before the Tim Burton movie came out, but I absolutely loved what they did with the joker character with Jack Nicholson. Don't get me wrong, Heath Ledger did an outstanding and amazing job and I absolutely loved the colourful character of Joker he played, but Jack Nicholson's version has always had a huge place in my heart because it wasn't just that loved the movie, it was because when I was a kid when my family was still together and all of my family members were still alive. So maybe it is a Sentimental thing to me that I have a bias for that movie and the actors and actresses who played in it.

    What some people don't realize, when the argument comes up "who was the best joker?", is that Jack Nicholson was the one who transformed the Joker into the psychopathic, darker than the original version character that the Joker originally was. Yes, Heath was a great actor and Phoenix even took it further, but I guarantee a huge part of character study was focused on the original Jack Napier, making Nicholson the greatest to play the part.

    From what I know about The Joker, he's highly intelligent, highly unpredictable, lives for chaos and has very little fear. Interpreting him as an actor has to be very difficult. When you struggle with it, you get Jared Leto's try hard performance.
