The Swans are beyond reproach. They are eternal. From the very beginning up to this current day. I have a bunch of their albums from all over their career and they are entrancing and disturbing and out of this world. Glad you stumbled upon them. You are going to be left speechless. Michael Gira is an excellent artist as well. He is a GOD. You should also listen to the band Slint their album Spiderland is a game changer. J
This track has a meditative quality. In meditation we encounter the urge to move, change our position, resist the stillness. Meditating is not the resistance of those urges, but acceptance. That’s what it made me think of anyway.
I saw the swans in 83 or 84 in a little punk rock bar we called the Rat and they were quite intense, dramatic performance, very loud but clear bass driven sound, they stuck out in my memory as being innovative. They were different. that was before Jarboe joined. I saw them with Jarboe a couple years later, she added a lot to the group with beautiful vocals. There is a recording of Jarboe singing Love will Tear is Apart, it’s a gorgeous. Great reaction.
A former bandmate(Scott Henderson, producer, Dayglo Abortions - also gifted me 'Killing Me Softly with Islam'), cited them, Einsturzende Naubauten too, '85. Never heard them 'til now, cheers. Back now to vid #2, realized I should seek this out.
This album is incredible. This is one of my favorite songs, but the closing song The Apostate is one of the best songs Swans ever made. Also the Title track is a trip. Overall amazing album, amazing band.
That did definitely wet my appetite, look forward to hearing the rest. And in the category of weird music, but not as dark, you should check out The Residents album Not Available. Weird and hypnotic.
Einsturzende Naubauten- “Sehnsucht” in my humble opinion the greatest industrial band, I just love this song. Definitely something you should check out if you haven’t yet seen them. Their later stuff is much more melodic but I feel it’s important to see their development.
Probably in the early days, but they definitely built their own instruments. When I’ve seen them they definitely had long time constructed instruments that were unusual. Like a jet turbine I think it was.
@@Hartlor_Tayley Test Dept. did, because they didn't have money to buy "real" instruments. E.N. used to use shopping carts and electric grinders on their live concerts because they just wanted.
@@cleantheocean test Dept. Thanks for reminding me of them. EN made their own instruments thanks. I did see them in their early days and maybe I read it or someone told me that because of shipping equipment from Europe was expensive, they were scavenging from scrapyards. I can’t remember what exactly they were using but a local Boston band the Concussion Ensemble was inspired by that show and I knew those guys which is who I probably heard about the scrap metal story from.
Awesome! My first listen, too, and I'm already impressed. (Although, that "innocence" pun did instantly remind me of Art of Noise's 1987 album "In No Sense? Nonsense!" so it felt a little... well... copied, somewhat.)
Interesting, I don't know thi sband, thanks for sharing the discovery. Will look into them a little bit now and also follow along as you review their music.
It's cool you're discovering Swans for the first time. I found them in the 1980s, and I can recommend their early 'noise' material - it's repetitive and grindingly awesome. Their 'break-out' LP is undoubtedly 'Children of God', which I think is their absolute best. If you get the chance to see them live, don't miss it: I've seen them quite a few times in London, both in the late 80s and in the noughties. Mindblowing ....
This album resembles the sound of nails scraping down a chalkboard in the classroom. The musical composition, I cannot explain. What is going on with this album cover. The group is called Swans but, there is a photo of a very scary looking wolf or dog or a beast. It looks like CUJO from Stephen King's novel. That's a nasty looking animal. This album is terrifying, Daniel! 😯
Well, I found this interesting and parts of it quite beautiful, however repetitive noises tend to drive me over the edge so I can't say I enjoyed it. And for me music needs to be more enjoyable than challenging. I'm still keeping an open mind though and will partake in the second song with you. Beyond that I cannot say at this point.
Now THERE'S a coincidence! Turn 18, and Swans sing "Your childhood is over" to you. Auspicious, surely. Welcome to adulthood!
Haha. Good comment
I was also 18 the first time I listened to this album.

That Yorkshire Terrier looks pissed.
Wow! I did not expect such a melodic (albeit ominous) opening number. Excellent piece. I think this is going to be a tremendous journey.
This is my favorite album of all time. It's like music for some lovecraftian ritual sacrifice and I love it.
The lyrical part was like a hypnotic chant. Am I under a spell now? Must hear what's next.

I saw Swans when they were touring their follow up to this album, To Be Kind. Incredible show.

The first swans song I heard. Got hooked instantly lol. Saw them live in 2017 in Brooklyn omg it was something else
The drums on Seer are awesome
That did definitely wet my appetite, look forward to hearing the rest.

Didn’t they salvage their “Instruments” from local junk yards before each show ?

Wow. I never expected any reactor to hit Swans. Excellent choice. Try their “Time Is Money (Bastard)”. Less melodic,. Very industrial.

Whoa…that was interesting. I’m going to listen to the rest of the album now. Sorry, I can’t wait for you.
Hope you take the time to listen to the rest of the King Crimson albums.
Always spooked the everliving shit outta me.

Rn Lunacy is my favourite Swanc's song
The Swans is a black hole, a one I'm glad pulled me in. There is no turning back.
Also you should do Slint
If you have a chance go and see them live. It’s like watching an orchestra of melodic, abrasive noise. Bring a good pair of acoustic ear plugs.
Aahhhhh Swans are amazing
😁 thank you, friend
Thank you:)
Please check out Pink Floyd Pulse concert, the song Comfortably Numb.
Lunacy is a good one - not so sure about the rest of the album !!!
They do a cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”

not my favourite album by them but still fucking amazing, try to be kind or the glowing man
The Glowing Man keeps getting better with time.
this album is incredible but... this is nothing compare to there other album Soundtrack for The Blind you gotta do a reaction to it
Daniel is in for a shock when he checks his email
