  • It was normal for Elizabeth Vargas to deal with the pressures of her high-profile career in television with drinks after work. On top of that, she felt a need to numb her deep-rooted anxiety that clouded over her since childhood, but ultimately she began to feel the misery outweighing the magic that alcohol provided.
As she continued to function at a very high level, with relapse seeming like a normal occurrence, she finally found freedom when everyone backed off and stopped judging her journey.
Tune in to hear how she is now helping to forge a supportive community devoted to helping others find their own freedom.

My daughter (11) has experienced the same anxiety/panic attacks over that past few years, exactly as described by Elizabeth. It amazes me that we are able to witness the human evolution first hand, by witnessing the grace, understanding and compassion we are able to offer the next generation. I recognise that my own anxiety was repressed and internalised even before I entered the school system. The school system makes it much more visible and confrontational. Thank you for a beautiful and important conversation. xx

Her book Between Breaths was one of the first ones I read when I was questioning my own drinking. This was about 3 years ago. It resonated a lot regarding the anxiety and using alcohol to manage this. Excellent read.

Elizabeth seems like someone who I would have been friends with in school. I too, am anxiety-driven, a voracious reader, and I even majored in Broadcast Journalism. I truly felt a kinship with her when I read her book, including the addiction part. I truly enjoyed this interview!🙂

I’ve discovered my own anxiety has been life long. I remember truly relating to her story 3 full years before I started to try to quit.
It took several attempts but just reached 22 months.
Geez. I remember being in kindergarten and just clinging to my Mom like my life depended on it over and over again throughout childhood.
Teenage years were just dripping with anxiety. Ugh.

@@stokedonsobriety3892My Dad traveled for work. He was gone for months at a time. I remember my Mom taking me to Kindergarten and I would chase her car in an absolute panic. One day during recess I missed my Mom so much I walked home. All these decades later and I still remember the poor teacher pulling up in front of our home with the cops in the hope I was there. I remember my my Mom was sleeping so I went outside to wait for her to wake up.
A few years later my Dad died and my Mom began drinking.
The separation panic 😱 got worse.

Congrats on 22 months. I think we do a much better job explaining anxiety and emotions in general to children now.

Great interview. I have watched and loved Elizabeth for years. You always looked professional, could never tell you had problem. Loved how you brought up the book “Moment of Clarity”, please read that book everyone. Annie , thank you for having Elizabeth on. I still have her interview she did on 20/20 in 2016 on my DVR. She is beautiful and admire her so much for her journey to sobriety. I feel exactly like her, going back to that drinking person is not an option. And lastly, Elizabeth I truly hope you can put away that shame you feel for good. I had that same shame for awhile. But now Instead of ashamed, I’m proud to have conquered such a serious addiction. You should too Elizabeth,. I am going to find your podcast. Thank you again for sharing your great story❤️

I am so grateful to Elizabeth for her amazing forthright stand in the face of the persecution she has experienced. Even Diane Sawyer's interview with her, I felt, had a slant of shaming her. Which is utterly reprehensible, considering the addiction in that industry not only to alcohol, but pedophilia, sex, other drugs....including Diane Sawyer's own nebulous connections to various nefarious agents in media and other predatory world players. Amazing amazing job Elizabeth. Thank you so much for your courage and willingness to stand in that blast furnace and stand for truth. God bless you guys.

It is only in retrospect that I realise I had a first panic attack around age 11 or 12. For approx. 36 hours, I was convinced I was going to die. And my mother mocked me.
On later developing anorexia - & then bulimia - said mother repeatedly mocked and punished me for being sick, as well as for the habits involved.
I have experienced intrusive depression and anxiety since approx. age 10.
I now realise that my concept of 'anxiety' actually includes approx. 70% fear - which at times can elevate to terror, or panic - and that my concept of 'depression' actually includes tremendous sadness.
Struggling at the minute to cut back/abstain from alcohol.
Struggling also - at age 49 - to find reasons to do so.

I agree with Bob Wiley-maybe not put away the shame but release it. Try: Dr. Kristin Neff's work on self compassion, Dr. Jeffry Martin: 45 Days to Awakening, Byron Katie, etc. Also I believe that Elizabeth would have had a lasting and earlier recovery if she had been schooled in the ideas and practices of This Naked Mind. Annie your recovery method is truly revolutionary. Have you considered opening a rehab using your methods?

Disgusting that they made her do a public interview, especially considering she’s far from the only one who struggled with addiction in that industry.
