I had this idea for a gag gift called "the box of unsettling noises." It's just an empty square decorative wood box where the bottom portion has a hidden compartment for a haptics device and a speaker. The haptic device would be a hammer that will occasionally make a loud thud once or twice a day. The speaker would play something that sounds like an airy laugh or crying.
Fantastic and incredibly atmospheric. I'm about to make something using a piezo mic and had a similar idea using springs and a music box. The rubber on the side of the box sounds so eerie. Inspirational.
Man EATEOT has some real competition, the second the note box started playing the entire experience became 5 times as haunting and the sense of dread that came with it just kept getting stronger as new sounds were added. This is some really good stuff!
Hi, I built a Noise box a few days ago too. I have to admit, your creation is much better. Also the little music box on top is a super cool idea. Perhaps I’m gonna add one in the future. ✌️
So I want to make something like this but I don't know how to actually output the sound... how the piezos get send to the output 1/4" jack. Any suggestions?
I was waiting to hear the sound of that square purple piece but then i realized it is not part of the instrument but it is just the cat tree in the background
Beautiful! I am a director of school plays and will be building one of these for an upcoming Grimm’s Fairytales play around Halloween. A could questions… 1) Does that rubber mallet have a name? Is it a common percussion mallet or some other object being used for this? That plus the bow (plus your hands themselves) really does the trick. 2) Were you using anything other than reverb and looping pedals? How many looping tracks were you running at the most? On other, similar devises, having a way to create ongoing drones underscoring the rest really elevates this from a novelty sfx box to something that could actually create a complete sound to underscore a scene. I definitely want to employ that. I’ve now seen it done with the hand-cranked wheel and a pair of DC motors vibrating a single string. I like this option too.
@@stevenslaughter8473 hi Steven! Thanks for your comment! To answer your questions, that rubber mallet is initially made for gongs , it's called Olli Hess e-Gong rubber:) Concerning the effects used in this video, if I remember correctly, I was only using a looper (Tensor) into a lo-fi reverb (Météore) into a feedback generator (freqOut). I don't remember the number of layers, I was overdubbing sounds while playing the box!
Cool! And thanks for the description! Will have to try something like this! A lot of people are selling Noise Boxes at some pretty crazy prices. (Okay, I guess it's to cover their Time, but still.) I made myself a simple "proof of concept" yesterday by using the cardboard box from Amazon that the Piezo Pickup came in. :) (having a reverb pedal and an Amp definitely helps too, obviously. :) )
Absolutely amazing sounds, I have been wanting to build a box of sounds like this for a long time and I thank you for pushing me to finally do it. I normally do atmospheric guitar layer stuff but I've always had my eye on these types of boxes. Love the randomness of the tones and sounds, again, thank you. Can you suggest a Piezoelectric sensor ? I've wired them up to bowls and kalimba before, but never a wooden box with vibro/reso/spring attachments.
Really beautiful. I'm curious about the 2 metal blocks you mounted on either side of those parallel springs. It looks like you have spring anchors screwed into them. What are they and where would one get them? Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Hm.. the only thing that was a little bit disappointed and that I need to upgrade is the door stopper which is too strong and so very loud compare to the rest. I have a lot of gain, so I play that box very gently most of the time. The door stopper isn't that interesting I think!
The ones I've seen always sound harsh. This one is truly beautiful sounding. I could listen to this for hours. What is the black and red thing you use to rub against the box?
NICE! I think I can fall asleep to this? It's night time and i'm sitting and watching this. Made me very calm and aware. But maybe it would be like falling asleep in the twilight zone :0 Do something with the cat pole!
very nice instrument, but also very nice performance! well done. Can I ask you what kind of springs are those? The big ones on the middle. It almost looks like a guitar tremolo string.
@@DaFake I know I've been asking questions a lot and I'm sorry about that but is it necessary to paint my box with some color so it would sound better? I just got my materials and I'm really excited
@@loris9920 no worries! Actually I've never painted my boxes, mostly because I'm too lazy(...) but i think that layers of paint would may be damped the sound and attenuate some vibrations, so I would leave it raw, but i might be wrong !
@@DaFake hey man, I just wanted to tell you that I've already built my first noise/ambient box. I just need more metal/wood stuff and some mallets and a bow. Your work was my main inspiration and blueprint, remember that! Thank you for your artistic ability, I appreciate you for real

THIS INSTRUMENT NEEDS A NAME. IT DESERVES A NAME.
Ambraphone?
It WANTS a name.
It's a NONA. NO NAme.
It's called "The Horror Box".
The most famous form of this was called the Apprehension Engine designed for a horror movie composer. Worth looking up also.
This thing looks as cool as it sounds.
Amazing. Surprisingly melodic. Best ambient machine recording ive heard
thanks a lot !
I love this. Recently started making a bastardised version of the apprehension engine, and this is very inspiring!

For anyone looking for an answer what the red wand thingy at the beginning is, it's called a gong rubber, or Egong (branded).
I waited to see how that gray square in the back sounded, then realized it was a stool. That bowed wood reminded me of a Daxophone. Cool sounds!
ruclips.net/video/29C7MHmLZ9U/видео.html
Yeah, I was also thinking Daxaphone.

I absolutely adore that in this video it's kind of hard at first to decipher precisely where the cat-toy ends and the human toy begins......
very cleaver.. fantastic!! I love it!
This is pure horror movie music. I love it!
Very cool. Now I know where a lot of wierd sounds in movies come from.
That was AWESOME. Great sounds, but also really well paced to hold the attention from start to finish!
Thanks Nick !
Every aspect of this is so imaginative.

Thank you so much!!

I've seen a bunch of these around and this one sounds the best by far. Great work.

It's the pedals and effects. Without them, every noise box sounds lame af
so very cool
Man, OMG you can an orthodox choir with that bow and wooden spoon. :O
I could see this as soundtrack for a Tarkovskian movie.

Google and Utube are your friends ;) Tons of already made info out there

Cool NoiseBox you have. Can you tell me the name of the stick with the rubber tip that you move around the box? Or did you make it yourself?
It's a rubber mallet for gong called I think " oli Hess" or something like that!
Thank you!@@DaFake
Wow wow Wow!

I had the same idea but I don't know how to build one

They're pretty easy to make. Just 1 piezo mic soldered to an output jack

What is that red curl of rubber you're using?

what is that wand thing with the red tip?
Any chance you could , would make one of these machines for a musician? I want one really bad ,Iike organic noise machine. Love this track
