I lived in Phillips Street until I was 8 years old, then we moved to Hunmanby Avenue a flat with indoor toilet, hot water and a BATH - luxury indeed. Then off to Wythenshawe with a garden - flippin eck we thought we were in paradise with all that room to play in and fresh air. Thanks Kevin you have brought back so many wonderful memories of a place I loved and was born in. Dad knew all of those pubs and sunday dinner we kids had to go and yank him out of the pub, he fell asleep in the afternoon and, of course, there was always a row with our mum - but great times were had - good old Hulme!!
I was a Hu;lme boy 1944 Loved the old Hulme dispite its problems .You could leave yer door open them days .The bed bugs were greedy and the Black Jacks scuttling round yer house .Nits ..We used to take jam jars to the populer picture house .Two jars and threepence yer in . I worked for the Derbyshires Eddy and George great guys .
Happy days from a Blackley lad who spent his early working life in Hulme & Moss Side working for the council 71-79. Loved all the people, a great mult racial area years before many. People that didn't know the area thought it was bad it wasn't,it was great.
My grandad lived in Stretford and as a child I visited several summers in the 70s. When we went into the city proper we'd pass the bullrings and they looked both like some sort of sci-fi set and intimidating. I recall many of my family telling me how dangerous the area compared to my suburban Chicago home. These pics bring a new level of despondence my memories didn't have. lol
Thank you for this video. I lived there on Bonsall St for two years from 1978 to 1980 and it was a bleak, bleak place by then. The scale of development was so huge, the building materials so poor. We had lovely neighbours - really houseproud - on one side. On the other side I think we never saw them in two years. Such was the sense of isolation in the densely packed deck access flats.
I grew up Nelson Terrace Brookes Bar,and I remember my mum donkey stoning our step.We moved to Stretford but I later returned to Hulme/Mosside in my late teens and the only thing I hated was the cockroaches.I loved going to the Boat Night club-yep those were def the days.
@jayhere40 i was raised in hulme went to martinscroft school. lived on freeman walk i remember mr bibby's love the sherbert a little too much tho.. blessings
I'm Australian, I have never left these shores, but I do enjoy old photos no matter where they were taken. Thank you for the huge effort you have gone to, to provide what must be some incredible memories for so many people. I hope many others see what you've done and post similar sets of memories from all places on this earth, because we all like to walk down memory lane.
I lived in Gretney walk and went to Birley High.I also drank in a couple of those pubs.Good job and loved the music you chose for the background again nice job'
My sister Nicola used to live in the Bullring. She lived there for about five years. It was a really nice maisonette with good sized rooms. The kids all played out front and my nephew Lee got his hand stuck in one of the playground apparatus and Nicola had to call the Fire Brigade. Dad also managed the Newsagents, I think it was called R S McColl, mum used to work there sometime too.
I use to visit my grandad in the late 60s early 70s I'd be about 8 or 10 years old so can't remember a lot. What I do know was that he lived in a flat on Brockley Avenue, Hulme. I think there was a pub not far - he liked a beer did my grandad. Because the main door to the flats was locked at 10.30pm he would leave his bedroom window open and get back into his flat through this window. No one was going to tell him to be in by 10.30pm. He was a rum old bugger. Not sure what it was called think it might have been the Red Lion. I would imagine the flats are long gone by now. But would be nice to know what is in it's place now. If anybody can help I would be grateful :)
Nice work Kevin, if you view the picture of Birley High school and pause it, you will notice that the crecents aren't there ! ie; Robert Adam, Charles Barry and so on. Therefore this particular picture was taken September 1967.
The last bit to go was the maisonettes on bonsall street in late 97..im sure my memories serve me right although they had been standing derelict for a while..
Resident 74-89 Calton Walk (next to Royce Rd) nice job mate. Any thoughts of prompting a Hulme party? bring your photos and a smile. Live in a nice house now but would love to commission my block to be built verbatim somewhere in Hale or alike and move back into my flat!!!!!! (and rent the rest at cheap cheap to ex-residents only) !!!!!!!!
Sorry I'm back again lol at 6.47 Martins Bank-just behind there was Nelson Terrace and my elder Siblings used to take me up on the roof of that bank to play with them :/ kids these days don't know what fun is pmsl
The First two are unfortunate but the third one is Self inflicted Im afraid, you should have stuck to the one Woman/Man or put something on the end of it.

Utopia didn't last that long - thankfully, let's hope that the latest reincarnation of Hulme lasts a little longer.
