+Agonywolf Media - Anyone who wants this feature needs to let Adobe know. In my 17+ years at Adobe this feature never came up in the Premiere Pro development team and I was very surprised at how popular this tutorial is! I agree that this should be a native plug-in but you can let Adobe know that you want it by requesting the feature here: www.adobe.com/go/wish. Anything submitted to this list is compiled and reviewed by the team, if enough people want it, they will see that it's added.
You have to make your voice heard to get this feature added (see my previous comment). Adobe has a history of listening to customer requests and although this might be a popular feature elsewhere, it rarely comes up with broadcast and film customers.
Hi, Colin... you make very nice instructive videos, but I am surprised at your surprise at the volume of requests for this effect. It's a very nice way of bringing captions on screen, as an alternative to wipes... and very good when you are conveying information, with a lot of words, as opposed to revealing a lot of words at the same time. The idea is to match reading speed... (ideally!)
Dawg on it... I've been searching for weeks on that dynamic link. No one ever said anything about ACTIVATING text editing in Premiere nor that the EFFECTS PANEL had a left and right option... THANX A MILLION...
thank you. I appreciate learning the nuances and backdoors into using Adobe Premiere. i hope that the latest updated versions of Premiere and AE still obey by the same rules.
Easy as tutorials, I actually like short and straight to the point tutorial and you do nail it!! Thanks again for the time you put into this and keep it up!
Man I've learn more with your video of premiere pro and after effects then others videos on you tube. I'm still watching your other videos and still learning new things....thank you very much for creating this tutorial videos....
Wow, thanks. Just so you know, the knowledge I impart here is the same that I would present to companies like Disney, NBC, 20th Century Fox so you're in good company!
This is JUST what I wanted. I kept looking at AE to try to get some easy text effects for videos and was always put off by having to learn so much about AE. Great!!
This is by no means aPremierePro tutorial :D Could just as easy say "Tutorial on how to create a 3D robot in premiere" Go open Blender, create the robot, save video, then import to Premiere Pro :D Still a nice tutorial. Thanks
+alexmosutheskypirate Here is my thinking on why I did it this way; I received a lot of requests for this technique and I had a feeling that the small trade off with having to initially create the effect outside of Premiere Pro would outweigh the fact that the effect does not exist in Premiere Pro and so far the comments support that. Additionally I would not post this tutorial if it were not possible to actually change the effect and duplicate the titles from within Premiere Pro so in essence it's more like using a plug-in. And lastly, your robot example is not the same because you can't change the robot from within Premiere Pro and the typewriter effect can be changed.
Yeah, the tweaking from within PremierePro is what makes the difference. So if I don't have after effects, could I download and import an AE comp into Premiere and then copy and modify it ? Thanks. Saludos:D
Unfortunately not, you need After Effects. It makes sense to subscribe to the full Creative Cloud because everyone needs Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop at the very least and those three purchased individually cost more than the whole shebang!
Great stuff here. Hope they add this feature to Premiere Pro. Would love to have a simple way to adjust speed of typing to make it more natural. Dynamic link did not work until I restarted both programs, but that was the only snafu. Glad I found this video. the manual animation toggle method is nice for short clips with perfect control, but for bulk text typing feature, this is great. Appreciate your work on this 4 years and 1 week ago. :) Since this video, Adobe appears to have removed the added step of (unlock text layers....).
Yes, there have been some changes to the process since I made this. I have been working on a new version of the Typewriter Mogrt that has a slider for speed and a script that makes the letters appear more natural. I will make it available to my PayPal donors in the next few months. Here's an example: ruclips.net/video/FKISO94On0s/видео.html
Finally!!! Thank you so much for this video! It is a shame they do not have an effect for this in premiere and make you have to use after effects, but nonetheless, I now know how to do it :) Quick question: Is it possible to speed up the typewriter effect of the text? If so, how is this done? Thanks!
+RagingJuice - Yes you can speed it up by going to After Effects and selecting the text layer. Press the "U" key to expose the keyframes for the effect. Now drag the second keyframe to the left and that will speed up the effect. Be careful not to add any new keyframes and just work in the second one.
Great video Collin!!!! Keep it coming... Hope premiere will increase the text limit on this feature & even text import option which will enable it to so many new levels of usage... I guess you got what i am thinking...
I'm trying to take advantage of the new Motion Graphics Templates between After Effects and Premiere Pro but I just can't get the Typewriter effect to do what I want.
Dear Collin. I can't turn the composition into a template. In my screen under composition settings > advanced it shows only 2 checkboxes. The last one (Template...) is not there. Any ideas? Thanks!
The third check box is not available in After Effects CC 2018 either. All my apps are latest versions. I may need to install a previous version which is a nice feature of the CC license.
Did you watch this part? ruclips.net/video/CBrGKvqUrL0/видео.htmlm20s Did you see when I talked about Master Clip effects? If you don't see any of these features, then you need to update to the latest version of Premiere Pro.
I did a poor man's version of this in premiere only, using only the crop tool. Yes, when you look in detail on it, you will notice that the letters "slide" out from nowhere, but when looking casually at it (as most users do) you won't notice slides. Especially if enhancing the effect with sound effects. Here's the short sequence I did (part of a longer video): ruclips.net/video/tTxG6ceU8uA/видео.html The blinking marker is just key-framing the opacity, and then I just matched the speed of the text-crop with the movement of the marker (again using keyframes). This together with the soundeffect, creates a pretty nice illusion. The down-side is, that unlike this video above, you cannot easily make multiple text-versions. But what can one do, when not having access to after effects? XD
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this! Do you know how to add pauses in the writing / slow down the speed of the letters? I used the keyframe as explained in your screenshot but all it did was add more time after all the text was already written out. Any help would be amazing! :-)
In the latest version of AE when you go into advanced composition settings they don't have the 3rd option that you have here in your video. Any suggestions? Is it hidden some where else? Thanks p.s. Your screen shots in the description were also a great help.
You can bypass that operation now in the new version of After Effects. Just save and import into Premiere Pro making sure the text layer is not locked in After Effects.
+Bikalap Basnet - Adobe does not offer a subtitle plug-in so I'm not sure where you get that. If you want a new Title, try the FIle menu> New> Title. That will create a new static title and some people use that as a subtitle.
Really useful, thanks. Premiere and After Effects MUST be the same vintage as each other, otherwise Adobe Dynamic Link will be greyed out. eg both 2017 versions.
That's true but if you're using Creative Cloud, then both versions will always be the correct ones to work with. You actually have to go out of your way to install different versions.
Thank you for this. Great and easy to understand. Just one thing. In my After Effects CC 2018, when I'm about to change the composition settings the option template is not there. I only have check boxes for Preserve frame and preserve resolution. Any clue? thanks /chris
I am using Premiere Pro CC 2015 And i want to upgrade it in premiere pro CC 2018. But my system requirements is not matching with minimum system requirements of premiere pro CC 2018. So What I do?
The minimum requirements only ask for 8GB RAM and a 1280 X 800 display so I'm not sure what else you can do other than buy a new system. You don't need a GPU, you can edit just fine without one. What part of your system doesn't meet the requirements?
hello, quick question i did all of these but when i click once on the timeline text in premiere pro it doesn't show anything on effects controls ,please help
Are you looking at the top left hand side of the Effects Control Panel for the Master Clip Effects? Have you installed compatible versions of Premiere Pro and After Effects?
+naoryaish11 - Yes you can. Open the Comp in After Effects and twirl down the disclosure triangle for the Text. Find the two keyframes and change the start keyframe to 100% and the end keyframe to 0%. Next, change the End value to 0%. (Note: End value does not need a keyframe) Here is a screenshot: imgur.com/726iUYT
Hi thanks for the tutorial. Only issue is that I'm getting a dialogue saying "Failed to connect to Adobe After Effects Dynamic Link" any suggestions? I've got Pr and Ae both downloaded from Adobe CC so it should be the most recent version.
I'm using the the latest version of After FX and Premiere Pro and the tick box option 'Template (unlock text layers in Premiere pro)' doesn't exist in the AFX advanced tab. Do you know where this would be located in the newer version? Many Thanks,
The new workflow is to use After Effects "Capsules". Select the Comp and in the File menu choose Export> Composition As Text Template. This operation will bundle up all the needed assets (minus fonts) into a new format aecap file. Basically this is a zip file with a different extension. If you change the extension to .zip, you can then unzip it and you'll find a copy of the original Comp. You need to latest version of Premiere Pro to import aecap files. Just a note that I was preparing for Adobe MAX creating a bunch of After Effects Capsules and I found that Premiere Pro occasionally would give me an error of missing linked files that I knew were there so I think there are a few things to work out on the Premiere Pro side with not reading caches correctly. You can go back to the old workflow by just importing the After Effects Comp and any unlocked text layers will be editable in Premiere Pro.
Thanks for the detailed reply. much appreciated! I am indeed using the latest version of Premiere but I forgot to mention I'm on OSX and not Windows. My apologies! similar instructions?
Adobe changed this aspect of After Effects since I made this tutorial so if the text layer isn't locked, then you can edit it in Premiere Pro. Here's a screenshot: imgur.com/a/soo9f I'm working on an update to this that would function more like a plug-in with the ability to have random text and support right to left text. I was all set to release it when I found a bug in the way that After Effects and Premiere Pro work together. As soon as Adobe fixes that bug, I'll release it.
Super easy, however, on my advanced tab I do not have a 3rd option only "preserve frame rate".... and "preserve resolution".... "template unlock" section is not there as it is on your screen...
Adobe has updated the capability in the latest version of After Effects. I'm working on a new version of the typewriter effect that will include multiple lines of text and a more natural way to have the characters appear. Look for it in the coming months on videorevealed.com.
+VideoRevealed Hmm... interesting... I posted the previous reply to this comment directly via Google's notification slider/window (without going to the video page) but that didn't add "+VideoRevealed" at the beginning whereas when I click "reply" here on RUclips's video page, it automatically gets added at the beginning. So, Google seems to treat these replies a bit differently. But do you see any difference between these 2 replies on your end?
No I don't see any difference. I have had problems replying to Google+ comments while I'm on RUclips. I do not visit Google+ anymore and anything that's posted there is a background, automatic process that I don't even know about.
Hey thank you for responding! I can do all the steps in the video here but unfortunately there is no template option in After Effects and thus I can't edit the title text in premiere.
You must be using a newer version of After Effects. For that just make sure the text is unlocked and it will be available in Premiere Pro. You are looking in the Master Clip Effects in Premiere Pro - right?
It's actually an older version so I don't think it lets me edit the text on the fly in Premiere. I just have to edit the text in After Effects which isn't too bad. Thank you for the great video it has been a huge help!
Yes thanks this is a simpler way of doing it...i actually looked at one of your more recent videos Apple-Style "Don't Blink" text... and so instead of changing the text completely with another one i would add the words i wanted in each key frame...but this is the actual way to do it...by changing animation i meant for example can i have to words come from the top of the screen instead of popping into the screen? ( but i assume that would mean i gotta animate the movement myself and AE/PP don't have a pre-made option like that)
Keyframes for changing the words and the position are completely independent so yes you can do it but you'd have to animate the position separate from the Source Text.
Today's update to After Effects supports right to left languages! blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/efficiency-and-optimization-at-the-core-of-the-latest-release-for-after-effects-cc/
That's odd, I've never seen that problem. Have you tried to Import the AE Comp through File> Import? Can you try duplicating the Comp in AE, then Import that duplicate Comp? Are you absolutely sure there is no video - what happens when you open the Imported Comp into the Preview Monitor? Also look to see if you have the V1 button (Track Targeting) turned on in the Timeline when adding the clip.
U mean to create a comp in AE and then open with PR? Btw I create the comp in AE by Dynamic Link by PR, but when i come back on pr and found the comp it only recognize as audio and i don't know how to turn it in a video
Just checking that you're running the same versions of Premiere Pro and After Effects? If they are not, then problems can occur. Did you update using Creative Cloud Desktop application?
Please try this as a test of your system: 1. Create a new Premiere Pro Project 2. Create a new After Effects Project. 3. Create a Comp *from within After Effects* (Just a simple solid) 4. Import that into Premiere Pro. What this test will do is bypass any possible video/audio codec issues and just use a basic synthetic element (a solid). If this imports correctly, then I would suspect that any video that is in the track of Premiere Pro when you are creating the Dynamic Link operation could be the issue. So, use the steps above to create the Comp but don't do it in Premiere Pro, import the video into After Effects, create the Comp and import that into Premiere Pro. Make sense?
Make sure you have compatible versions of both Premiere Pro and After Effects. Use your Creative Cloud Desktop application to update to the latest version.
Premiere Pro and After Effects need to be the same version for Dynamic Link to work. If you've installed the correct version and it still doesn't work, reboot your computer and try again. If that doesn't fix it, then try a new Premiere Pro project and a new After Effects Project. Create a new Comp in After Effects and save it. From the File menu in Premiere Pro, try to Import Dynamic Link> Import After Effects Composition.
You're not looking for the Effect, you should be looking in the Effects Control Panel for text fields. Make sure you have the Comp selected in the Timeline.
The Effects panel has been part of Premiere Pro for over 15 years so it has to be in your version. Did you look in the Window menu? How did you install Premiere Pro?
Would it kill Adobe to just make the typewriter plugin Premiere-friendly?
+Agonywolf Media - Anyone who wants this feature needs to let Adobe know. Am sure all of your experience will come handy & you will find a way for other amateurs to learn from you. Thank you for doing the videos.
awesome! great easy explanation. thanks!
You're welcome.
Dear Collin. I can't turn the composition into a template. In my screen under composition settings > advanced it shows only 2 checkboxes. The last one (Template...) is not there. Any ideas? Thanks!
You need to update to the latest version of After Effects which came out a couple of weeks ago.
The third check box is not available in After Effects CC 2018 either. All my apps are latest versions. I may need to install a previous version which is a nice feature of the CC license.
AE projects are Templates by default so you don't need that option anymore. Any unlocked text layers are editable in Premiere Pro.
Hi, im using AE CS6. The layer is already unlocked, but i dont find the section in Premiere Pro to edit the text.
Did you watch this part? ruclips.net/video/CBrGKvqUrL0/видео.htmlm20s
Did you see when I talked about Master Clip effects?
If you don't see any of these features, then you need to update to the latest version of Premiere Pro.
Thanks for the lovely tutorial, Mr.Smith! This will help me a lot in my videos as well...
That's great! I'm planning on updating this to reflect the new Graphics Layer in CC 2017.
That'll be great! I use Premier Pro CS6 though...
Awesome as always!
Thanks.
I did a poor man's version of this in premiere only, using only the crop tool. Yes, when you look in detail on it, you will notice that the letters "slide" out from nowhere, but when looking casually at it (as most users do) you won't notice slides. Especially if enhancing the effect with sound effects.
Here's the short sequence I did (part of a longer video): ruclips.net/video/tTxG6ceU8uA/видео.html
The blinking marker is just key-framing the opacity, and then I just matched the speed of the text-crop with the movement of the marker (again using keyframes). This together with the soundeffect, creates a pretty nice illusion.
The down-side is, that unlike this video above, you cannot easily make multiple text-versions. But what can one do, when not having access to after effects? XD
Great job!
Thank you! Means a lot getting compliments from you!
Much simpler this way!
Apoorv Padhye Which way? after effects or poor man's way (i.e. no after effects)?
Poor man's way, of course.
Thank you for your support, awesome content. :)
You're welcome.
Stay tuned for a new CC 2018 version of this. I have put together a new AE Comp that has more features.
Thanks for posting!
You're welcome. Stay tuned for an update in the next few months with a new Typewriter effect!
ruclips.net/video/FKISO94On0s/видео.html
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this! Do you know how to add pauses in the writing / slow down the speed of the letters? I used the keyframe as explained in your screenshot but all it did was add more time after all the text was already written out. Any help would be amazing! :-)
The easiest way is to use the Graph Editor in After Effects. See this screenshot: imgur.com/a/tKcR2

That setting was removed in the latest version of After Effects. Now any unlocked text layer is editable in Premiere Pro.

Yes, the workflow is the same on Mac and Windows.
hello ,
i don't have the template (unlock text layer ... ) in the Composition sitting !!!
do you know why ?
is there any other way to unlock it ?
Adobe changed this aspect of After Effects since I made this tutorial so if the text layer isn't locked, then you can edit it in Premiere Pro.
Here's a screenshot: imgur.com/a/soo9f
I'm working on an update to this that would function more like a plug-in with the ability to have random text and support right to left text.
Adobe updated After Effects since this tutorial was posted. Now any unlocked text layers can be changed in Premiere Pro.
So adjusting the speed of the typewriter and such will take place in premier now? Thank you...
No, text is the only property to can edit in Premiere Pro.
so how can I speed up the rate at which the text comes on the screen or add a drop shadow... etc..
So there is not a way to adjust the speed at which the text comes on the screen?
Thanks so much!
You're welcome.
really usefull keep going =)
+SUNOWNOW Yacine - Thanks and I surely will.
Great, thank you
+erfut - You're welcome, I'm still surprised at how popular this tutorial is.
nice tutorial. Thanks. But in my Adobe Premiere Pro, my Adobe Dynamic Link is disable! Any tips?
Here is a tutorial to help: ruclips.net/video/LvvjQbY1jgw/видео.html
and if you have multiple lines of text and you want the effect to show first line and progress to the next ones?
Adobe has updated the capability in the latest version of After Effects. I'm working on a new version of the typewriter effect that will include multiple lines of text and a more natural way to have the characters appear. Look for it in the coming months on videorevealed.com.
THANKS MAN!
You're welcome.
Unfortunately, there's no such option available in my version :(
Time to update then.
Hi,
I have a long text, how can I do it with a long text? When I drag typewriter on it, all the lines are being dealt with simultatinously.
You need to create separate text layers and apply the Typewriter Effect to each of them.
How many layers do i need? For each written sentence 1 layer?
Yes, I line of text with one effect applied per layer. You do this in After Effects by the way, not Premiere Pro.
excellent !
Thanks!
Awesome! Thumbs up! :)
+Alex Booster - Thanks! Hey, you're watching a lot of tutorials and I appreciate that!
Haha! Yeah, need to learn a couple of things for my upcoming show. :)
I am using After Effects CS6 and I have no template option in the composition settings. Am I just screwed?
Sorry but I've lost track of what CS6 could do. It's been six years since it was released.
Thank you soooooo much!!!!!
You're welcome.
Thank you very much.
You're very welcome.
what should i do if i want it to appear word by word instead of every single character being typed in? also is the a way to change the animation?
To display a word at a time, see this screenshot: imgur.com/a/oYx3Q
To change the speed, have a look at this screenshot: i.imgur.com/EU014uz.png
Today's update to After Effects supports right to left languages!

i use AE cs6 and AP cs6. but there is no "Template (Unlocked text bla bla bla)" on my Compotion Settings. do you know why? thanks :)
Those features where added later so you need to upgrade to Creative Cloud.
VideoRevealed oh okay then, thank you!
I follow this video step by step, but when i return to premiere, the composition of Ae is only audio and i don't understand why, can u help pls?
Yep
Please try this as a test of your system:
1. Create a new Premiere Pro Project
2. Create a new After Effects Project.
3. Create a Comp *from within After Effects* (Just a simple solid)
Make sense?
Sir i need help, it doesnt let me click on the adobe dynamic link.
Make sure you have compatible versions of both Premiere Pro and After Effects. Use your Creative Cloud Desktop application to update to the latest version.
i have not found template option in aftereffect cs6 in composition advance setting
+Manoj Kumar That feature is not in CS6. You have to have CC.
+VideoRevealed thnks, and your tutorial really very helpful and very well described.
I don't have the Template option in Advanced settings
It's been removed in the latest version because you don't need it anymore.
Opened "File" but "Adobe Dynamic Link" was grayed out, So opening it wasn't an option. Bummer.
Make sure After Effects is installed.
+VideoRevealed i have it installed, but still grey. any suggestions?
anyway, i can't wait to try it, great video!
From the File menu in Premiere Pro, try to Import Dynamic Link> Import After Effects Composition.
sir u r awesome
Ah, thanks!
my adobe dynamic link is greyed out... any ideas how to fix that?
You need to have a compatible version of After Effects installed.
Just do a page turn. Works perfectly and saves you tons of time. Would have to be one line of text at a time. Problem solved.
+CEMRanch - Interesting idea!
thanks
You're welcome.
I cant seem to locate the Effect once back in AP any suggestions?
You're not looking for the Effect, you should be looking in the Effects Control Panel for text fields. Make sure you have the Comp selected in the Timeline.
I located it. I didn't have the right window open. Thank you! great video!
How can we change the speed please ?
I'm novice in After Effects and Première so...
+un RUclipsur parmi tant d'autres - Take a look at this screenshot: i.imgur.com/EU014uz.png
VideoRevealed thank you very much ! Sorry I didn't see your comment :/
***** Thanks :)
It is Really Cool.....
+Paulo Costa - Thanks.
But I don't have an effects and presets panel?
The Effects panel has been part of Premiere Pro for over 15 years so it has to be in your version. Did you look in the Window menu?
How did you install Premiere Pro?
thanks sir
thank you so much
You're welcome.
yes..
this is really cool...
+pramod patil - Thanks.
Great.
Looks like I answered using a differenct account! 😜
No problem sir ,😂 but thats been a long time reply.
A "Premiere Pro Tutorial" that is almost entirely focused on After Effects (which I don't have).
You have two options:
1. Never have a typewriter effect.
2. Have a typewriter effect but use After Effects.
Pick one.
Cool
Thanks.
