Just one thing I wanted to point out: price your maintenance and repair into your rates, do not subsidize or cut your rates because you are doing your own maintenance or repair.
Great video as always. People don't understand the complexity in starting/running a business especially dealing with Uncle Sam and the paperwork and not including insurance.
Thanks Justin, I'm seeing replies from a year ago so I guess this is an old post. I just started watching your videos and I appreciate the great advice. For me your advice confirms that nothing has changed except the price of shit. I'm a driver from back in the early 70's to late-80 and my father had a dump truck business when I was a kid. There is nothing that I've done that I've loved more than operating a dump truck or a piece of heavy equipment. I'm getting ready to retire sometime in early to mid-2020 from a desk job that I've been riding for the past 35 years. I'm very interested in investing in my own dump truck as a way to stay busy and to utilize some skills that have been put on the back burner. I’ll be doing my research and putting together my business plan over the next several months so I can see if making this move is going to be worth it. I’ll be checking you out and by the way, Thanks for sharing!
I recently sold a construction/ Network Information company with 500 employees. I started out just like you did and sold it and retired comfortably at age 50. I got a 4k sq/ft garage filled with muscle cars old and new. I think you spent your money well, your work ethic and relationship skills will take you far. I hope your business continues to grow.
Thanks for that Fred that's my my goal is to have something to pass on to my son and I do have a very good work at thick and I'm pretty good at relationships thank you for noticing that
What’s going on sir. I just started my dump truck company and I didn’t use a lawyer to get my LLC. I went downtown and started it myself and it was a lot cheaper. Layers over charge for simple shit you can do yourself. I have a question about your pay??? I heard you say during this video that you make 800 a day and 800 a night. If you don’t mind sharing, what did you make a year your first year with one truck. I believe that would be good info to add. Really enjoyed how informal your video is. I took a lot of really good notes and finally I found someone with a dump truck channel!!!
Awesome video! I subscribed because of this video. I been a mechanic for over 30 years and now I'll be opening up my own tire and vehicle repair shop in Florida. It's encouraging to see how some one else is operating their own business and learning as they go, keep up the good job.
Im building a 2001 western star dump truck that need a new dump body im having a good usedset up for cheap. I will be all in like 17k said and done. If everything goes my way as long as it is a solid truck im getting it.
I was stopped by DOT once for 4 hours for a tail light and empty fire extinguisher and by DEC for 6 hours bc the neighbor next to the house i was working called then to say my machines were running all day, obviousfuckingly i had to work
mdlee52 your welcome dude glad you enjoyed it yeah and I don't know if I got banned from that one place that we are talking about but I left a pretty good comment on there so I'm assuming I did
Great video and spot on. I got into dump trucking 2 seasons ago now and everything you have said is 100% accurate. Its a lot of hard work and long hours but I'm getting there. And yes be able to do the work yourself saves $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, most of my break downs so far I have done myself with the exception of a hoist. Just wish I would have looked my current truck over a little more in depth. Oh well I've learned most things in life the hard way so this should not be any different. Keep up the good videos
Outstanding break down. I have started the paperwork required to run a dump truck company LLC, MC #, BOC etc. What would you recommend is the best way to establish client base?
Thanks for sharing this information I think it will help others to understand that you just don't jump in to a truck I think it will help Enlighten them and maybe help somebody out that's thinking about getting into the trucking business
Great vid. Can you make a vid about some numbers like like getting paid for work. Paying drivers. Are you providing benefits, best pay to keep drivers happy/loyal etc. thanks.
I cant speak for him but it's damn near impossible to offer benefits in a small company let alone a small trucking op.The margins are just too small. In towing a guy making 30% is earning most of the profit a truck makes and at times more. It's disgusting but we cant pay guys what the job is worth because of companies like AAA driving the prices down and I'm sure running dumps isnt all that different.
I have a future opportunity if I decide to purchase a truck. However I drive an 18 wheeler, I'm looking to buy a dump and hire immediately someone else to operate to start, I think we can both agree other than the decent pile of cash I need to invest; the driver will be my weakest link. Could you do a video on recommendations for someone looking to enter the dump business without operating the truck? Great video, thanks for your time. You're a go-getter and it shows from the start. Keep it up brother.
Here's some background if you care to reply, essentially I have a contact who runs the dumps. He will handle all the LLC and insurance, if I own the truck and it runs under his authority he wants a driver in the seat as bad as I do. He kinda sits where I think you will in the future. The truck runs in his name all that, he pays me 73% of the revenue and all I have to do really is help him ensure the truck has an operator and stays maintained. It sounds too good to be true. I've spoken to other players in the game who have checks for $3,300 in the week for one truck. They are over the road big rig drivers like myself. That check I mentioned, I actually saw. I just don't know if it's right for me to invest. I'm young and want to preserve a wealthy future. Like I said, sounds too good to be true... I smell bullshit even seeing the check stub.
kindly suggest me some innovations in truck business.... sand, stone, suppliers.....how i can make it systematic, how to grow supplies.... as our business is typical old manual based....and major problem is cash flow, as customers not pay advance or on the spot ...they pay us after 15-30 days ,.so cash shortage is major problem.....how to monitor driers...pay drivers daily or monthly
I guess he was working for a drag racing operation doing mechanic work on race-cars. Doesn't sound like a job conducive to saving $70k, but since they're on the road perhaps with no rent/room/board he could have saved it up on his own, or . . .
