      I was appalled by this scene. Victimization at it's finest. It's impossible to be a woman? Are you kidding me? What all around the world? Life is so much tougher for lots of different people who are starving or from war torn countries. If I had a daughter and she came home thinking like this I would show her a documentary or take her to a homeless shelter to see real suffering. This is such a damaging speech

    This speech was everything. The way America Ferrera delivered it, so raw and honest, it really hit a nerve in the best way. She put into words what so many people feel but struggle to say out loud. It’s one of those moments that makes you stop and go, "Yeah, finally someone said it." Totally iconic.

    I watched Barbie in theater in my German hometown. During the speech, you could hear a pin drop and when it was over, some girls behind me started applauding. Most of the audience joined in, including me and my sisters. Barely ever did I feel such a strong sense of sisterhood and understanding with a bunch of girls and women I didn't even know. Whatever people say about the Barbie movie, I can only thank Greta for speaking so strongly for women in western societies and giving me and so many other girls the feeling of sisterhood and of being understood.
    btw, sorry for my English. as I said, I'm German.

      Yet, you women are the ones - who created those standards. You wanna outshine eachother, and want the same men. You seek the same attention, and the same gains. If you spend time with your father, you would never have been in such a dark place. This is why fathers matter. Not feminism.

      @androow1983 It's not sexist that she spoke on true experiences that women have though? If anything, she was speaking on her own experiences as well. She's not attacking or excluding men by speaking on female experiences, the speech doesn't invalidate or dismiss their issues simply by not talking about them. What are you on about

    • @joxiejoxie6457
      @joxiejoxie6457 2 years ago +21

      @androow1983 It's upsetting & very true that men have their share of struggles as well as women do. But she wasn't wrong. & the Barbie movie didn't put down men either, so that's a some excessive fire being put on a woman just doing her job.

    • @joxiejoxie6457
      @joxiejoxie6457 2 years ago +22

      @androow1983 Well, maybe it's because... it *is* a female experience. & This speech alone doesn't speak for the whole movie, which doesn't aim to silence & invalidate men's experiences at all. Speaking up about one side's problem is not the same as speaking over another's, though your comment does exactly that.

    • @joxiejoxie6457
      @joxiejoxie6457 2 years ago +23

      @someusernameinhere & You're right. But it isn't NOT a female experience. I repeat: bringing attention to a group is not the same as inherently overshadowing another.

    I was absolutely shook when I heard this in the theater. In 2.5 minutes, it totally summarizes and eviscerates the bizzaro-world standards women are held to. If America Ferrara does nothing else, she will be deservedly remembered for delivering this speech. Bravo, Greta Gerwig.

    • @ryanchristiansen
      @ryanchristiansen 2 years ago +212

      It's all humans... not women. We seem to be still locked into this celebration of victimhood. It's a VERY American sentiment that sadly so many other Western countries have latched on to: "woe is me". "Poor me" "I'm a victim". We really need to embrace stoicism which is the EXACT opposite of victimhood.

    • @kingofswing3000
      @kingofswing3000 2 years ago +154

      It's the perpetual victim speech. And women hold each other to, or are responsible for, most of it. Take some responsibility. Look: both men and women deal with stuff like this daily. So we're not enemies, we're made to complement each other. It's about recognizing our weaknesses more than our strengths and leaning into each for help.

    • @FiresCollide
      @FiresCollide 2 years ago +331

      The comments to your reply pretty much sum up why it's impossible to be a woman: 1. Immediately dismisses women to recenter men, 2. Blames women for being victims, 3. Points out that it's just a script so it's not "real." It's honestly just...so perfect. Thank you, random RUclips dudes, for so perfectly, *perfectly* underscoring the truth of this speech without even realizing you are. Seriously, just bravo.

    • @FiresCollide
      @FiresCollide 2 years ago +51

    i think they did a great job casting America for this part.
    especially for us girls who grew up knowing her as ‘Ugly Betty’, it truly captures the way the world is run at the expense of women and how they SHOULD represent themselves or else they’ll be unworthy.
    who knew a movie about a doll could have such an impactful statement that a lot of people looked over.

    • @henrymanley4116

      Deep down, I get that feeling all the time, I'm always keeping an eye out for potential double standards with gender all the time, and whether it's discrimatory or a high standard, women always seem to be cast aside as a separate species, which I find ridiculous because women can be just as good or bad or vulnerable as men, it hits with me because in my experience, me and some of my friends (other guys) play into a couple of typical female stereotypes, thus proving the genders can't be so different from each other.

    • @Sabbathtage
      @Sabbathtage 10 months ago

      @henrymanley4116 We're all just human. It crazy how gender norms divide us. I remember being a little girl with only boy friends in my class and how so many adults in our life would not rest until I was succesfully separated from them because they thought that only boys should play with boys and girls should play with girls. It broke my heart, and my friends', and even then I thought it was BS.

    I am a woman and I agree to this 100%. I also have nephews and when I look at them I notice how it can be impossible to be a man too. They have to love their kids but not too much or they’ll be seen as a mom. They have to be strong, but not too strong or they’ll be seen as jerks or if they are not strong enough they are not real men. They have to like sports and nothing romantic. They have to work hard to support their family but not too hard or it will seem like they don’t love their family or if they work too hard they’ll be seen as absent fathers. They have to treat their daughters and sons differently and if they are not the stereotypical son and daughter, people will think there is something wrong. They have to want to do housework but at the same time not like it or they’ll be seen as being whipped. They are not allowed to cry or have feelings or they’ll be made fun of.
    My nephews are sweet and kind. They cry and one of them plays with dolls. I worry how the world will see them, but at the same time, I’m proud of them. I acknowledge how hard it is to be a woman, because I am a woman and it is so damn hard. But I realize that it can be hard to be a man too. The social goals society puts on women and men, it’s just so sad and like America says, I am so tired of it.

      Thank you for putting this in writing. What you say about becoming a man is soo true. Confusing, relentlessly pessimistic, the standards are ridiculous. Soo much pressure to "be a certain way" for group, family, or societal acceptance. And we wonder why so many young people have chosen "trouble" in their lives. It's genuinely an infection of craziness in our society.

      🤦‍♂️…WELCOME to the world of adults, compromise and responsibility! Humans have known that the extremes are negative since the dawn of time! But apparently to a whole new generation this was a new concept! Yes being masculine and stoic is good for men but too much masculinity and stoicism can be negative for you and the people you care about. Yes having attitude and being independent is good for women but too much girl boss attitude and too much independence stripes you away from your femininity and your own feelings as a woman, thinking those feelings are weakness and you have to overcompensate .
      There’s nothing special about this speech is ridiculous

    These kinds of double standards have existed for so long and are so ridiculous that it was long overdue for them to be spelled out like this. Most of the time, movies try to (and should) follow the “show don’t tell” rule. But Greta Gerwig knew the kind of movie this needed to be: so honest and clear and firm that nobody can ignore the message. Because the message is simply too important to be ignored.

    The line where she said "You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane! But if you point that out, You're accused of complaining." hit hard.
    Once I pointed it out that I was frustrated over that we girls can't walk home alone at night, that men usually sees us as easy targets.
    And I got a response where a guy said I was complaining, that I can't blame every single man, sure I can't.
    But I had been violated as a kid, so I don't trust men at all. So that line really went into my heart. I cry every single time I see this, but I can't stop watching!
