Chasing waterfalls at Blackwater Falls State Park + Bear Rocks at Dolly Sods (West Virginia)

  • For our second day in West Virginia we saw beautiful views and chased waterfalls at Blackwater Falls State Park, visited the cute town of Thomas for some awesome coffee, drove a rough road to Douglas Falls, and ended our day at Bear Rocks at the Dolly Sods. While the day wasn’t without a couple hiccups, it was absolutely gorgeous and quickly made us fall in love with West Virginia’s beauty.

Safety is our #1 priority and we want to stress that this adventure, and all future adventures, will be done responsibly and with the health of others in mind. Here are the steps we are taking everyday, including in these videos:
😷Masks and face coverings. We wear these anytime we are near others outside and especially indoors. If we don’t have a mask on in a video, it’s 99% because there was no one around.
⏰ Exploring early. We normally start at sunrise anyway because of less crowds, but especially so with COVID. We have been starting our days before sunlight so we can limit our interactions.
🧼 Washing and sanitizing our hands, especially after touching anything outside of the van.
🚐 Being in the van 95% of the time when we’re not filming. The adventures we share are a small sliver of our lives. We are staying in the van all day everyday when working and the only time we leave is to do laundry, get gas, or go to the store.
6️⃣ Keeping our distance. We are trying to stay at least 6 ft from others, which truthfully isn’t always possible (and then we make sure we cover our face).

We were ecstatic that you found Thomas WV! We said in your last video that one of our favorite vacations was in West Virginia. Thomas is a big reason why. It's so eccentric that when we passed though it and had ice cream out on the patio at the Purple Fiddle we immediately went and found lodging. We stayed for several days unplanned. We loved it!

Lifelong West Virginian that lives in this area. I always get so excited when people explore my neck of the woods. Unfortunately, the word is out about Dolly Sods and it's like this most of the time from what we hear. About 10 years ago you could go this time of year and there'd only be a handful of cars. There are many off the beaten path places like this that are still wild and not overrun.

Loved your video and we love the Thomas area! We're here right now, August 18, 2021. We found the road right outside of Thomas that goes to the waterfall. However, those potholes Kathryn talks about in this video are completely filled up with water as of today. We've had a lot of rain since we've been here 4 days ago. We started down it but turned around because we didn't want to chance it. Today you would want a 4 wheel drive raised up vehicle. I'm sure it will get better again when the rain slows down. We absolutely love this area though!

We were there after a heavy rain and the falls were falling across in a solid sheet. The water was a coffee with heavy cream color. Also, the branches in the trees next to the falls were blowing in reaction to the draft that was caused by the strong water current that was flowing down next to them. It was almost like a small storm was happening in that immediate area even though all of the rain had stopped. The day before we were walking on the road in the drizzle and saw a full arch rainbow that looked like it touched the ground on both ends.

Dolly Sods and the Davis/Thomas area are probably at the top of my list. Other good spots are Stonewall Jackson State Park. So many good hikes there and the resort itself is 😍. Fayetteville is also an awesome area and has a similar vibe to Thomas. You could visit the New River Gorge Bridge and also eat at the Secret Sandwich Society which is a gem in itself. I live in the Charleston area so I also have to mention that we do have a really great state museum at the cultural center on our Capitol grounds. The capitol itself is also so so pretty when it’s not covered up 😉.

We had taken all the necessary precautions (food hung in a tree, etc). The second was just as it was getting dark and was pretty close to the trail. I first came across your vlog earlier this year when I was making my first trip to Austin (it seems like a lifetime ago, with Covid), and I checked out a whole bunch of amazing spots - especially Valentina’s - I never would have known about without your video. So when I was planning a trip to West Virginia, I was so psyched when I came across this video. Just visited Blackwater and Douglas Falls yesterday - they were awesome - and Tip Top coffee in Thomas, is one of the best coffee shops I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been to a lot!) Actually ( correction), Coopers Rock is a state park not a national but it is only 15 miles from Morgantown. And if you ever do come back to Morgantown, you can stop by Wamsley's cycles and rent a bicycle to ride on over 100 miles of rail trails. But most of all, you must stop at Terra Café, the deserts are out of this world.

Growing up and working in WV and now living in NW Arkansas, I find your travels very interesting. I have been to most places in your recent series in WV and NWA. One special post of yours is of Blackwaters Falls State Park. In September, 1987 I asked my wife to marry me at on the lower deck directly beside the falls. After our wedding in Tulsa, OK we drove to Fairmont, WV where I worked. It took blind love and courage for her to move to a remote town in the mountains. Last year we went back to Blackwater Falls for our 32nd anniversary. Side note: find Bemis, WV and put it on your place to go list if you head back to WV. A town literally at the end of the road with great trout fishing.

Onto your West Virginia series! Another excellent video with some excellent choices to showcase this state. It’s also nice that your shared the less than glamorous side of travel. You two keep it real and I really appreciate that and I am sure your other viewers do too.
This is a beautiful section of the state, heck I would venture to say of the entire US. We try to do a fall color trip every year and we picked this area a few years ago. We used Blackwater Falls, which a gorgeous park, as our base. We hit up Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, and Dolly Sods as our other stops. I can’t believe the Dolly Sods was that busy when you went. Insane! We hit it during peak fall leaf season and it wasn’t anywhere close to being that busy. West Virginia doesn’t seem to be a travel destination but it definitely isn’t a secret either.
We also had a pretty big snafu during our trip here. We travel with a roof bag on our SUV. After unpacking it, I left the buckles that attach it to the roof rack on top of the vehicle. Needless to they were lost and I was freaking out how we would get home with all of our gear. Luckily a hardware store was open on a Sunday and I MacGuvered something that I hoped and prayed would hold on our trip home. Thankfully it did.

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  3 года назад

The Dolly Sods crowds were sooo shocking to us! We are used to crowds in the more popular states, so we were not expecting it to be that bad! We loved it though!
