  • To plug Dick's guest shot on MTM's variety show. Apologies for the video quality, this is something I saved from a channel that is now long gone.

Two of the most beloved people in all of American history: how the people loved Dick and Mary! If the people could have invited them over for dinner, they would have!

And to think, Carson was almost cast as Rob Petrie before they decided on Van Dyke.

Dick DID appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, singing "Put On A Happy Face".

I just saw he clip. Interesting that Dick didn't remember. He openly talked about a drinking problem so perhaps a lot of his career was a blur.

Mary was born in 1936, so she would have been 24 when the DVD show started.

Wasn't Mary's birthday Dec. 31st? If late in the year, it would have been 23 just as Mary said.

@@cacatr4495 The show began in October 1961, so she would have been 24.

Having looked it up just now, MTM's birthday was Dec. 29th, 1936, which as you say, made Mary 24.

It was Dicks idea to invent Stereo TV.

Ironically, the first program NBC broadcast in stereo was The Tonight Show, in July 1984.

Dick van Dyke is wrong about NOT appearing on the Ed Sullivan show..he was on there during his run during the Broadway show of Bye Bye Birdie.. he sang the big song from the show "Put on a Happy Face"...
