This is so interesting! I love how the cursive and block are different but similar too, just as in latin script. Makes me realize that someone who isnt used to my writing system must get really stumped at first when reading handwritten texts. Like my sister writes her a and d almost the same, and her s is basically an i bc she doesnt curve it enough. And when im writing fast/taking notes it looks like ive only written a bunch of u,l,i and o instead of words. And as everyone else has said, your handwriting in both english and chinese is gorgeous!

It's so interesting how this characters looks similiar to Japanese Hiragana. I think I now better understand how Hiragana developed. And it makes sense to write a character in the normal more complex way when you want to convey its meaning and to distinguish it from tenthousands of others while writing it in a simpler, cursive form when it's only about pronounciation. It saves a lot of time because Japanese syllables are simpler but words consist of much more syllables than in Chinese and you need much less different characters when you only represent the pronounciation. Also it makes it easier to know whether to read the meaning or just the pronounciation. Languages are fascinating and scripts too.

Yup, hiragana are a subset of the old Hentaigana. Which were kind of like a standardized form of cursive man'yogana (Those were the use of kanji as a purely phonetical system. Which was used before the invention of hiragana).
Katakana also comes from this. And in many cases the characters which evolved into the same sound in hiragana and katakana were different. Which is why the two systems look so different.
      Here are some examples:
      あ comes from 安
      こ comes from 己
      す comes from 寸
      た comes from 太
      め comes from 女
      に comes from 仁
      And so on
It's difficult to see the relationship. But when the Chinese character is written in cursive (Like how this video showcases) it becomes much more obvious

I find writing Chinese Characters (I'm just a student) I need a much thicker tip ,1mm or larger, than writing Latin letters. Even markers, as here. I have a friend who writes hanzi with a very fine tip pen, it's torture to read, 20 strokes in 3x3 mm box.. also lack of space between words gives me a headache.. hope I can adjust.

@@ChineseHandwriting Ok, maybe 20 strokes in a 5x5 mm area, I exaggerated.. but you know what I mean. Seriously, as a beginner with only about 1000 words so far, lack of space between words is a challenge at this point. I guess if you're native Chinese reader, it's not a problem. Tiny fonts, fine tip pens, those kill me. Very happy you use a marker in your videos and not a fine tip pen. Thanks.

No doubt this takes a lot of skill and admirable practice, but am I the only one who has no desire to learn it? I can't see how it looks nicer. Strokes are indistinguishable. Unlike when I started writing non-cursive Chinese, I did not feel the pull of excitement to learn this. The only upside is that it's faster to write, which I don't need. I guess it depends on your specific goals.

Doubled words are common in Chinese. English has a few doubled words too (Bye bye, mama, papa, no-no, yo-yo), but Chinese has way more of them and it can be used to intensify (adjectives, verbs), to soften (verbs), for repetition (verbs), for collective forms (classifiers and nouns), as a kind of diminutive (family member nouns), etc...
