  • In Honduras, cultural immersion is just one of many experiences for visitors. The Garifuna (or Garinagu) are descendants of African slaves who intermarried with the Carib Indians when shipwrecked near the island of St. Vincent in 1635. Today, there are many Garifuna communities along Honduras' North Coast and in Bay Islands. The small fishing communities are known for their language, music and dance, recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Visitors to Honduras can arrange visits to one of these communities through a tour operator, most commonly in the Tela Bay area, La Ceiba, Cayos Cochinos and Roatan.

Punta is a Garifuna Music genre as well as cultural dance. It is as poetic folk art genre through which social commentary is frequently expressed. The dance represents sexual dialogue between male and female who attempt to outdo each other with unique stylized movements. It is characterized by the shaking of the hips and features an almost motionless upper torso in contrast to the constant movement of the hips, legs, and feet, creating the characteristic shaking of the buttocks found in many African-derived dances.

@Hotters70601ben part of your STATEMENT is INCORRECT.
The GARIFUNA PEOPLE are ACTUALLY those who are MIXED and were so-called "BLACK CARIBS." It is the "BLACK CARIBS who FOUGHT VALIANTLY against the FRENCH and the BRITISH during the so-called "CARIB WARS" in St. Vincent. Matter of fact, there were CIVIL WARS amongst the so-called "YELLOW CARIBS" and the "BLACK CARIBS" in St. Vincent...to such extreme that the FRENCH/BRITISH HELPED to SETTLED those DISPUTES.

When the "BLACK CARIBS" FOUGHT the BRITISH in those two CARIB WARS, the YELLOW CARIBS hardly lifted a FINGER to ASSIST their blood brothers. In fact, they assisted the British. The TWO MAIN KNOWN CHIEFS DURING that PERIOD in time were CHATOYER and DUVALIER...both were "BLACK CARIBS." Chatoyer, as you already knew, was the PARAMOUNT CHIEF of the "BLACK CARIBS" and is now the FIRST NATIONAL HERO of St. VINCENT and the GRENADINES.
