Part 1 of my Let's Play of Spyro 4: Enter the Dragonfly. In this part, I start the game and complete some of the Dragon Realms.
---
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (スパイロ・フォース・スーパー in Japanese) is the fourth game in the Spyro the Dragon series and the first Spyro game to be on the PS2. It is also the first Spyro game for the sixth generation consoles, and the first game not exclusively released on one console.
The game was originally going to be about Gnasty Gnorc teaming up with Ripto in an attempt to capture all of the dragonflies for themselves. It was supposed to contain 120 dragonflies to collect, over 25 levels, a framerate of 60 frames per second, and relatively fast loading times. However, Universal Interactive Studios forced the developers to rush on developing the game in order to be available by winter 2002 and therefore it suffers from an inconsistent framerate, long loading times, graphical glitches, sound issues and lock-ups.
Additionally, Gnasty doesn't appear anywhere in the game at all (although he is mentioned by Ripto), there are only 9 levels for the player to explore and only 90 dragonflies for the player to collect.
IGN gave the game a 6/10, stating that, "Enter the Dragonfly is essentially a replica game, a side step or a lateral move rather than a step forward. So, what it comes down to is this: Are you up for more of the exact same Spyro game?" Ted Price, the President of Insomniac Games, even spoke out about how bad he thought it was. Price said in an interview, "Spyro has become an abused stepchild... Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly on PS2 and GameCube was an absolute travesty". Игры
All I remember from this game was the forever loading times
zionarchive I was unable to finish it, because it wouldn't load.
I couldn't finish it. My GameCube died from age :(
@@cswsgaming8841 so did your mum
I remember when I had the ps2 version as a kid the loading times were super long. I swear some levels took 6 minutes to load. The GameCube version I got recently for 3 bucks loads in about 30 seconds.
I borrowed it off my friend after loving spyro 1-3, went through like 3 world gates before giving him it back.
HOLY SHIT, I REMEMBER THIS GAME. How much, I'm now massively in question. I used to have this sooooooo long ago on GameCube, and I remember playing the hell out of it, but strangely don't remember much. When I first started watching this, I honestly thought this was the wrong game. I didn't recognize the beginning cutscene at all, nor any of the characters. But I do recognize the way Spyro goes "yowch!" when he hits stuff, and the silly springing noise of the sheep jumping. I totally forgot they even turn into meat. My jaw is thouroughly on the floor in both nostalgia and shock from how much I don't recognize this, despite dumping countless hours into it as a kid. This looks NOTHING like I remember. In this past week I've played and beat a copy of Dawn of the Dragon I had laying around but never played, and I'm suddenly feeling a revival in interest in Spyro, and the only game I remember having, but played a bunch, was Enter the Dragonfly.
The character models actually look like they just took the models, or at least the textures, from the PS1 Spyro games and are just displaying them at a higher graphical fidelity, with a little shine thrown on, that's probably a result of the severe time constraint. Also, I was probably 7 years old when I first played this, it was also my first PS2 game, and as a little kid I absolutely adored this game just because it meant more Spyro to play. I never beat it, though, cause it ended up being the most difficult Spyro game to me as a kid
AngelOfTheTriad I mean they literally stole some of the textures. The weird writing on the walls are from Molten Crater!
The glitchyness and errors are due to this game being the first one NOT made by Insomniac, and being completely rushed, like you said.
I remember still loving this as a kid.
Sad this game didn’t get to be what it deserved to be.
There was issues with people making this game constantly changing. It was in the Spyro 4 documentary.
It's sad, this game could've been so much better if they didn't have such a tight deadline to meet :(
Yeah. Fuck Universal. They're a cancer who ruined both Spyro and Crash, at the end of the day.
CrystalFissure so you’re glad that they don’t do video games anymore?
As a die hard Spyro fan, I was pretty excited about this game when it came out. It has it's cons, yes. The slow frame rate, the glitches, the lack of completion. But it's still Spyro. And because of that, I can't help but love this game. I've completed it 100% quite a few times without too much trouble. I only wish they had taken the time to properly develope the game. It could have gone far.
Awesome part. I miss this game.
***** Thanks JW. Play it!
I recently replayed the first three games because I just loved these games as a kid! I remember the fourth one sucking and couldn't remember why. Now watching your videos I remember how slow it was and how frustrating it was. I can't wait to watch all of your videos to see what happens !
As a kid, I almost bought this game cause I thought the cover was cool.
As an adult, I'm so glad I never wasted my money on this. But for some reason, out of curiosity I want to buy this game. Lol 🤔😝😂
Yes! I've been waiting for this!
It's gon' be gud.
Right everything wrong about this game.
A) The style is ugly, improved graphics sure but ugly.
B) When you charge into a wall, it takes longer to recover before continuing.
C) Re-using old villains rather than creating new ones.
D) Gulp being able to speak.
E)Ripto offering Spyro to join him - He *Hates* Dragons.
F) Small Amount Of Levels.
G) Through an Easy Glitch, if you wanted to, you can fight Ripto at the start of the game.
Bonus complains that I did *not* notice as a kid, Spyro has no shadow.
Hopefully it will be added as DLC to the remastered trilogy
And the levels are too long and annoying
The reason Gulp and crush can speak is because Professor taught and educated them in Spyro 2 epilogue.
The character models and how they move are actually rather creepy. I also cant stand how text doesnt fit within the text box. Lastly the slowdown and framerate drop is horrendous. If these werent issues i think maybe this game could have been decent
I absolutely love Spyro. This game made me so sad when I first played it. The only good things about this game are Tom Kenny and Stewart Copeland coming back. Like other people have said, this game could have been so good. Sometime I wonder whether this game is the reason they sold Spyro on...Had they made something good with it, maybe Spyro would have more outings on newer consoles without it being Skylanders or whatever. Strangely enough I actually enjoyed a Hero's Tail more than this game.
It's weird. I know I did play this game when I was younger, but I have very little memory of it. Thank you for this video, because it gave me the nostalgia I was looking for regardless.
Spyro was good while it was made by insomniac. I still play the first three and I'm never tired of them. This came out when i was 6/7? an i always always wanted to complete it but every copy I had glitched and it was impossible to. It had so much potential but even watching you play it now.. The game play, the speed.. It just doesn't flow! it's so awkward and so so sad :(
This game brings back so many memories for me when I first had my game 😭😭
I remember playing this in grade school.
I was so exited about the cool new graphics but the lagging and slow loading hurt my 9 year old heart.
It's very cool to watch this gameplay tohugh! Nostalgiaaa
You have such a nice and calming voice to listen to I'm enjoying watching these a second go🥰
Thank you! Hope you enjoy them a second time!
@@CrystalFissure I am for sure :)
"Whaddyu whe wnaht dis taim bawws?"
I rememeber as a 7 year old, I glitched my way to the final boss battle and beat the game in literally minutes, and just coming back here for the nostalgia
As a kid I kinda liked this game. I was only like... 6 years old when i first played it keep in mind. I was excited about seeing Ripto again and seeing Crush and Gulp talk and having continuation of the story. I didn't like the gameplay but I liked the levels. I felt there were a lot of really good and creative levels in this game. I didn't like how slow this game was and how lacking the story was but there were some great looking levels and interesting level themes. This game had potential, but yeah, it was rushed so it ended up being not shit, but just mediocre and boring. I yawned whilst watching this LP and not because of you, but watching the game is boring itself.
The first level is boring as hell. When I get to Dragonfly Dojo it's a lot more fun. But I agree with you and loved seeing the villains again. Such a shame there were only like 3 cutscenes in the whole game.
This is my favorite childhood game to play
The series that made to watch the channel, might be time for a rewatch 🫡
Hell yeah! Always good for a rewatch.
Big fan of your channel!
I love this game!
You know how Moneybags only has one appearence in the entire game?
Well, on the ISO, there is a file of Moneybags (presumebly after Spyro obtains all his gems back) in the main hub of him giving his gems back to Spyro before going completely mad and going on about gold.
You can listen to this here: tcrf.net/File:Spyro-EtD-HUB-B.ogg
Wow, that's a really interesting piece of dialogue. And that article has some awesome new audio I've never heard. Great stuff, thanks.
Makes sense as he was involved in most levels in Spyro 2. (If he wasn't in the level he was charging access to it)
Duper Gamer
Yep.
It was rushed as they wanted the game on shelves for Winter 2002. Regardless how much it was complete.
I view ETD as that game that had a demo, but not the full game.
Duper Gamer
I'd like Spyro and Crash back. The ORIGINALS (Insomniac and Naughty Dog, Vicarious Visions) not that Skylanders or Mind over Mutant crap.
It’s a game that had such enjoyable pieces, but not enough to fit together to make a good game. The rushing and greed is such a tragedy, it had so much potential
Now to go through EtD... Haha I'm liking your vids, you seem to reflect a lot of my personal opinions on the games (or personal onions as I say :P). I mean, technical and design aspects aside...
I have to say, Ripto is one of my favorite Spyro villains ever (he's a DINOSAUR) however the way he's portrayed in this game is so frustrating. He's so much smarter than what he was written here, and I'm glad Season of Flame and Attack of the Rhynocs somewhat fixed that. Also am I noticing how very different the way Gregg Berger portrayed him vocally in this game than in Ripto's Rage? His voice seems much smoother and calculating in this one compared to the gruffness with an extra topping of LARGE HAM from the second game. Also he looks like a donkey instead of an actual (feathered?) lizard.
Also why did they voice Gulp, I mean Crush makes more sense, he actually took up higher learning in the epilogue of the second game but my gosh.
I mean there's little things here that are absolutely hilarious, like the lamb meat. That's literally something that I could see happening in a Spyro game. Also, later the gems that run away from you? Ingenious! Too bad it was used in THIS game...
i loved this game, i stil feel excited to this day when i see a dragoin fly =D
this game just pisses me off!!! it had so much potential in it...
shadowthephoenix1 I know what you mean. It's so damn frustrating.
This game could’ve been better. According to Wikipedia, the game was originally going to be about Gnasty Gnorc coming back and teaming up with Ripto so that the two could steal all of the Dragonflies from the Dragon Realm. There would have been around 120 Dragonflies to collect and over 25 levels to explore. Unfortunately, Universal Interactive has really drop the ball. They force the developers to rush on developing the game in order to be available by Winter 2002 and that’s why the game is the way it is. Damn, that would’ve been one of the best titles if they keep the bugs and glitches clear out, keep the original contents and take the time and develop it and release it another time.
referral madness yeah they should’ve delayed the game until 2003
Universal Interactive were awful. They were also responsible for Crash Twinsanity being so cut down, not even trimmed.
This is the first game I can remember playing and I glitched it and went somewhere you go near the end of the story but it was flooded with water
I lost it at 'tabasco'
Have you managed to get the tank sublevel working at all? Dolphin crashes out on my whenever I go in there :)
Yeah, it did work. Strange that it didn't work for you.
Ok so Gulp, who lives in Avalar, was unemployed in the Forgotten Worlds, begging for work from a guy in the Original Dragon Realms (who at the time Ripto found him had most likely been cast to the Dragon Junkyard anyway). K den. I've never completed this game either, mainly because my sister once deleted my save when I was at like 75% :( It's just so painful to play, I have it on the PS2 and there's such a delayed reaction to any command. Also, is it just me or does Spyro look a bit like he's floating? He has no shadow which is weird, but that's not the weirdest thing to happen in this game. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it, and thank you for actually playing this torturous game for our entertainment xD
It doesn't make much sense. When my new computer arrives though I'll be playing the game at full frame 60fps, as Dolphin Emulator managed to fix the frame rate and that's amazing, because usually it fluctuates between 20 and 50, constantly slowing down. Loading screens are also better in the GameCube version.
I do have the Gamecube version so I might try that one instead I can't deal with the PS2 anymore XD Yeah the loading screens are the worst bit they've taken literally 5-10 minutes before and I think it was the Cloud 9 one which when I arrived in the level didn't show me any picture which was a complete waste of time. I've since fixed that but I don't play this game much unless I'm checking out glitches
I love it
grew up with this game on the ps2 lol
what's up with the charge? why is it so slow? and what's up with the character models:/?
Amazing. First Ratchet5, and now you are starting this LP. I wonder who will be next?
What's the bet Angus starts one? Hopefully not for a while though. And I'll likely beat Ratchet5 uploading-wise. Every 3-4 days there will be a new part. That can be assured this time.
Playing this game for the first time after avoiding it like the plague all these years, and I have to say I'm really struggling. The slow and choppy frame rate and awkward controls just make it so painful to play, and I can usually put myself through anything.
I like all the ideas in it, but it deserves a reboot version of what aspects in *This game* had that did good, but like the other games *did better at*
levels back then were better made
Was that a princess bride reference at the start? WIth gulp?
I normally don't watch playthroughs of games I haven't played, but I'll be watching this, because this game does look as bad as everyone says it does. Also this part was full of tutorials, I think any child can eventually find out how to break the baskets in this game.
I think the home world looks fine so I'm guessing you've seen other footage. Honestly the game looks like a classic Spyro game but what makes it frustrating is how slow the game can be and that it's too short.
I think you'll enjoy the playthrough!
CrystalFissure Well with your insight of the series, I think you'll make it really interesting.
As a Spyro fan I can say this game was terrible lol.. the gameplay was so laggy it felt rushed
i under stand to spyro fans like you for example this game was rushed and will never get a perfect score. for a review.
Donovan Ridley this is a Great game
Esma Sabljic trash opinion
Awesome part, also what are your computer specs?
3.2GHz Dual Core, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD iMac. Pretty average.
Funny thing is, I actually beat this game. Not in its entirety, mind you, but I managed to beat Ripto without any prompting from the game. It was an experience to be sure.
The Angry Guy That's classic.
I agree this game isn't that great... I like this game, I enjoy playing this game, but that doesn't make it good. At least the soundtrack wasn't bad, it is actually pretty cool.
stellarSB Had it not been for the PS1 trilogy, I would have never found the game fun. But, aside from the wide open spaces and framerate, the game feels like the Spyro from those games. Although these problems should never have existed in the first place, I don't think the fundamental control is broken. I still think the last boss is horrible though.
Agreed. The reason I'm replying is because you have a gif avatar and that's cool.
Haha, thanks man. The avatar is from Majora's Mask.
Sparx wasn't gone for long! XD
Gah`.. I'm confused as to how the PS1 Spyro games looked infinitely more charming, while this one's models look like feces..
The1upBlock Hah. Aspects of this game do look decent I reckon, but then other bits look awful.
You're right. It's just the characters themselves that throw me through hoops mostly.
The1upBlock the only thing that is better about the ETD models is they are more smooth and that's it...
I played this game when I was little
In retrospect, Insomniac Games could have passed this franchise onto a more experienced team of devs like Eurocom. They did a pretty decent job on a Hero's Tail, even though that had its flaws.
How did you manage to get this game to work? I've downloaded the .ISO file, plus PCSX2, but everytime I try to load up the game, I get a black screen.
This is the GameCube version. PS2 version doesn't work unfortunately. Or fortunately, because it's much worse than the GC version.
Oh ok, thanks for that.
Some much memories
What spyro was it where there was a hot air balloon that you had to unlock??
The first one?
this one
I recently decided to play this game through for the first time in years, it was a mess of glitches, but my god I forgot who good the soundtrack was. Cloud 9 and Honey Marshers were the only levels that felt decent, not the best game, but it was a decent pass time.
***** Decent, yeah. Musically this game was on point.
CrystalFissure Its a shame this game didn't turn out the way it was intended. I'm honestly shocked you jumped right into this one after YotD, will you be playing A Hero's Tail sometime down the road.
The widescreen hack seems to have some flaws. The text goes out of the box and all counters etc. are not on the edge of the screen where they're supposed to.
***** It doesn't matter because the game has a widescreen option. I fix it in part 2.
In this game i can hear the music of Stewart Copeland
Yes, you are correct. Copeland did the soundtrack.
What is the goal in this game? To run around collecting diamonds?
i think we can all agree that this game was the best *Troll face*
XD even the words when talking to other people can't stay in the word box
I almost broke the left analog stick because of this game
I know all about how rushed this game was, and would be even more rushed than Year Of The Dragon, I never actually owned it but I did indeed hire it a couple times and I also beat the game, but yeah this game pretty much is more of a Year Of The Dragon clone with dragonflies being the thing you need to find in searching and beating challenges just like the dragon eggs were, and this game also makes no sense how all the levels are even longer and it's just inside one great big homeworld being the Dragon Realms with 3 different parts to it going back and fourth, and Ripto being the only at the end of the game as you mentioned
There needed to be more levels. That would have fixed a lot of the problems. Because at least there would be more detail and more to do. Less complaining would happen.
CrystalFissure Exactly, and Crush and Gulp should have also been made bosses as well in between a certain number of levels
okay but i loved the soundtrack
Yeah it’s still one of the best.
Was this produced by Universuck Enturdtainment?
I remember being so psyched to play this... aaaand then it started to load...and load...and load... needless to say, I was done after about 30 mins :/
I don't understand why seemingly everyone hates on enter the dragonfly saying it has bad graphics etc. In the 1st game spyro looks like a crunched up piece of paper lol.
theearlystrike41 You probably don't remember. I don't blame you. I played this game too but I forgot how slow this game was and I once had it on PS2. Most people said this game was glitchy and I can see why.
This wasn't the worst of the spyro installments but it's definitely up there
Simply put because it's not the original Spyro. and it shows everywhere.
Everything feels off. because it was made by another developer.
Funny enough, exactly the same fate happened to Crash. Although, Crash also had the fantastic Team Racing 1 and the somewhat entertaining Crash Bash.
Universal interactive need to give Spyro back insomniac i wish insomniac games made enter the dragonfly
Well, that was quicker than I thought, lol.
SerialK86 Was trying to keep the hype while making the wait short.
I played the ps2 version of this game and it fell short of my expectations. It is a game that takes fucking forever, and it felt empty.
My first Spyro. I hated when it fucked up.
Do you think you could do Spyro A Hero's Tail LP?
C'mon man, I just started Enter the Dragonfly! I have expressed interest in doing that game, but not for quite a while. Twinsanity will come before it.
i wasn't meaning now i was meaning in the future. Anyway keep up the good videos :)
this game is the best to do a speed run with :3 some guy beat it within 3 mins. It literally only takes 2 glitches (one involving the water dive glitch) and I personally can beat it in about 6 mins.
I've beaten it 100% completion too.
I hope I don't sound like I'm bragging Lmfao. I just really love this game. it does have its frustrating moments, but I love it.
This game needs a complete reformat.
Memories
You'll find out that in one of the levels from the first home world those guys from Country Speedway return and you have to rescue their cows from some flying UFOs.
I quite liked that.
I love this game I play on ps2 I beat it Its actually like this game best
watching this, not sure if the gamecube version had better sound and graphic quality over the PS2 version or if youtube really messed with how it looked/sounded cuz this is bianca sounds nothing like on the gamecube and the graphics seemed to have more depth in the character looks. though the graphics differences is probably just youtube. over all on the gamecube I feel nintendo did what sony should have done which was fix the bugs cuz i only ever experienced frame rate issues or anything of that matter during those lightning zap check points
Bianca does sound like that on the gamecube version, and as for the graphics im pretty sure this is being played on an emulator, and the gamecube version is less glitchy but there is 1game breaking glitch in the gamecube version that makes it impossible to complete . in the dojo speed way you cant finish the race because the place counter doesn't go down
What's your outro theme?
It’s called Intricate Designs and Platforms!
crystalfissure.bandcamp.com/track/intricate-designs-and-platforms
@@CrystalFissure Thank you! I started listening to your music again and forgot how good it was. It's been years but "Things I Relate To" was burned into my mind and I would find it popping into my head every now and then. I am also impressed with the consistent level of quality in your tracks.
This game runs pretty decent on the PCSX2 emulator.
While this game is horrible. The music of this game is some of the best in the series. Consisting of, Trance, IDM, Ambient, Downtempo, World, and of course rock. It's Copeland at his finest.
Might want to fix the part number to [1/3]. :P
Also, I still need to get the Greatest Hits version for the PS2 to at least resolve the loading times, frame rate issues, etc. While I do like the game, after finding this a while ago, it makes me mad that the developers were rushed. I would rather have a game released with no major bugs or other issues and as many levels as they intended to have during the non-holiday season than a game released during the holiday season full of bugs and whatnot.
spyro.wikia.com/wiki/Spyro:_Enter_the_Dragonfly#Development
This game can be REALLY annoying but parts of it are decent. 😊👌
by the way if you charge into the ice gate, there is a glitch that will let you through without using ice breath.
invadertak1001 Seen it; pretty awesome.
I wondered why he was always sighing through out the game, it made me feel like I sucked and I was taking to long to finish a level lol I thought it was the games way of saying I needed be better
childhood
They should have spyro as a PlayStation staple from ps1 to 4 there should be spyro games
I forgot how awkward this game was. No wonder I didnt keep it as a child. Least I can watch you !
The Spirit Dragon has always reminded me of the crystalized dragons from Spyro 1. Do you think that was meant to be a call back to that game? I don't understand why there are runes to give you breath abilities, why can't we just have different faires that give you the breath like in Spyro 3? At least there's the original Spyro vibe in this game, so at least they were trying bless them. Why didn't Universal just leave this series alone at Spyro 3? Like with the Croc series, before that series got terrible they were actually wise enough to leave it be.
Spyro was incredibly popular and profitable, so they needed to make more. If it ended at three the demand would have been insane. The problem lies that they didn't give the developers enough time to finish the game and thus what we see here is a rushed mess that didn't live up to it's potential.
It's such a shame really isn't it? How the series just got wasted away like that just because of the mess it turned into. The whole Spyro series is now just wasted potential.
Enter The Dragonfly isn't that bad. Just rushed and not finished. Had it been finished properly, it would've been a great game
Is thus game worth playing
10 years of having this game and I have never beat it.
+Chelsea Pierce Probably not the worst decision you've made - it can get frustrating to play at times.
I don't think he means frustrating because of difficulty I think he means frustrating because of glitches and unstable framerate.
update: I still haven’t beat this game
So Universal push pressure over the developers to rush the game and ended up like this
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly is not a bad game, and I agree this game has some bad Glitches, and a lot of missing content, but I really enjoy this game, and I am playing this game on the GameCube Emulator, which I never played it on the GameCube version before, only the PlayStation 2 Version, but I enjoy the GameCube Version better.
GameCube is definitely the definitive version.
@@CrystalFissure that's cool, and I really enjoy your videos. They are awesome.
@@MatthewKing-Alexander Thanks mate! When Dolphin released the update that allowed you to accelerate the GPU and play the game at 60fps, it instantly made the it better.
Wow I've heard how bad the opening scene is but... wow... that's ummm... well I'm sure they tried
1. Why does Gulp talk?
2. Why is crush so small? Why are both of them so small? Last time I checked Rypto sat comfortably on gulps neck.
How does Ripto know about Gnasty Gnorc
Exactly. Makes no sense!
I hated when you went to flame/Ice/zap etc something you shot fricken bubbles if you forgot to switch it back
william fleete Same.
He's definitely playing this on an emulator, which could make the game look and perform worse than on the consoles. I remember how smooth it played on the ps2 compared to the emulator and it definitely had a drop shadow.
***** This is the Gamecube version and there is slowdown on consoles. It's hit and miss. It's probably a bit better on console, though. And you're right about the shadows. I wanna fix that.
Anyone else notice the holes in Gulp's...blasters?
I could be corrected on this but the control's are slower in this game then the original three on the PS1. Even Spyro 1 was better
Yeah, that's why people hate it. Bad framerate.
Oh god the animation it looks like one of those Disney rip off movies that were animated in Italy
