One of the extraordinary things about this scene is that Addison, ever the critic, actually critiques her theatrics as hes breaking her down. She runs over to the door and tells him to get out, and hes like "you're too short for that gesture" and closes the door for her. Brilliant 🤣

Vaughn Jones dude the "make her like me!!" is even more insane. As a viewer you almost want to rationalize Eve's motivations -- a simple desire to get famous. At this moment towards the film's end one realizes how pathological it all was, and she becomes truly villianous when exposed by her nasty equal, Addison deWitt.

I need to see this movie again. It's amongst the smartest, most taut film scripts in the English language. When I first saw it I was utterly delighted. "All About Eve" was my gateway into old black-and-white movies. Before it, I had never bothered. Then I was blown away, and I've been watching movie classics ever since. It's so rare to get this type of good writing in movies these days. Oh well, that's why they call it Hollywood's golden age...

There are TONS like this from this period. Don't be put off by the black and white and the old directing and the hammy acting. There are gems like this with screenplays so sharp you can slice yourself on it. See also 39 Steps, M, Citizen Kane, Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Brief Encounter, Third Man for more of this kind of thing. In fact the more I watch films the more I find this period to be a greater source of gold than most other periods. The consistency off good if not brilliant films in this era is remarkably high.

I suspect Addison may have enough connections and power to keep her name out of bad publicity, even for films. It would be yet another reason for her to play his game.
Not only would he have her for blackmail because he knows her past, maybe he could also have her because his power could also protect her from the truth coming out in the media and around town.
      Just a theory, anyway.

What would have made this scene perfect is if Addison would have pulled Eve towards him by the hair... but in 1950, that would have been a bit much for audiences.

For me, this scene makes the film. It is cruelty unmasked. The evil of Eve and the elegant wickedness of Addison collide head on. They deserve each other and they both now know it.

There is no Shubert Theater in San Francisco. I was born and raised here. The theater that Margo Channing arrives at and runs into Addison DeWitt and Miss Casswell is actually the Curran Theater on Geary Street.
