A very interesting video. I have a "cheapy" winch on my Defender - it looks fab, and works OK, IF you are very careful and use snatch blocks. I stripped the gears on the first example doing a similar pull to your "out of the river" test, so the Traxxas definitely scores there! I did a Winch Test video on our channel and there is a Winch rescue during our "Three in The Forest" video. That's about as brave as I go without snatch blocks! The increased clearance required is a bit of a shame - would the new "winch bumper" that Traxxas offer resolve that issue? I notice you didn't point out the free-spool, which is a helpful addition over the cheaper winches. I have recently changed the bumper on my Defender, so would need to check fitting and clearance, but I'm definitely considering a Traxxas item if and when my current winch dies! Thanks very much. That's good to get some feedback on a cheaper winch, definitely sounds like the Traxxas winch out performs it then. I've actually changed the bumper for an aftermarket ally one which has better clearance.
Yes I always forget stuff unfortunately, memory like a goldfish! Thanks for pointing the free spool feature out, it does make unwinding the winch quicker.
I've used the winch multiple times since and the controller has been much better too. 👍
Is there mounting holes on the bottom like the knockoff and RC4WD winches?
It'd of been a no-brainer to just rip off that layout, if I can find info for that being the case I'd be ordering one today knowing I could just replace everything with this and get a free-spool.
Great video, could just be me but the gear mesh sounds mighty tight on that rig.
Yeah it has mounting holes underneath as well, as that's how I've mounted it on my new front bumper. 👍
That motor is dead now, mine never sound happy as they spend half their life in mud or water. But yes I agree on the mesh too, I'm going to get a adjustable motor mount soon, as stock is fixed. 👍
The TRX 4 sport and TRX 4 Blazer have a front battery tray for a smaller 2S battery, I did not see that tray on your Defender but that is where I mounted my winch it's not visible and it doesn't affect my approach angle at all, it's over the front axel and attached by 4 screws in that location. I'm pretty happy with that mounting location...but good vid enjoy your rig!!

I have that same tray on my TRX6, my understanding was it wasn't standard and was an optional extra?
I've actually replaced the front bumper with a winch bumper now and it gives much better approach but keeps the winch on the outside of the body. 👍
@@DoURC yup that will work also...I mostly installed mine on that inner battery tray because I have a plow on the TRX sport... obviously can't have a bumper with plow so that tray works great and I use the winch for up and down and a servo for left and right.....

@@DoURC yes it's pretty cool, it's a RC4WD plow, unfortunately I think they discontinued the plow....don't think it's available from RC4WD anymore....
3S , free spool , water proof, complete spare parts list. Only a few winches can compete and non other winch is waterproof or have a spare parts list.Even at 1:10 Scale and 1:1 scale you need to know how too winch! Both winches 1:1 or 1:10 cant recover your 4x4 out of any situation ,its important which angle you winch ,if your axels stuck you need to winch up to lift your axels not only winch to pull straight forward .Even important under heavy load dont winch without small "breaks" too let the small motor cool down.If you watch your truck doesent move and your winch till spool up till its stops you have the wrong angle! Winching need experience and the more you take your Truck in winching situations you get more and more experience and its great fun too winch your truck even from very difficult stuck situations for sure!Never shock load your winch because it will breake very fast your winch gears!If possibel spin your tires slow too support your winch.
Yeah it's a great winch. I've used it loads and it's taken lots of abuse. I power it directly off the receiver now and it's much more responsive. 👍

Anyone know why traxxas sells special winch bumpers? I just got a tx6. Got the winch free. While waiting for the bumper, still not in yet, I mounted it to the stock bumper. The holes are already there. All I did was drill two small holes for the fair lead. Did a lil trimming on the body and all is perfect! Why the need for the “winch” bumper?
I think iirc the winch bumper is metal. The stock plastic bumper will twist as you winch it. I added a different winch bumper, looks much nicer and stronger. 👍

Can you only use this on a traxxas vehicle or can i hook it up to my redact also?
No you could use it on anything. I power mine directly off the receiver now instead of the spare power connector and I find it works much better. 👍

I've got this winch and it's great, It has overload protection when it's overheated the led on top blinks ant it stops.
For more winch power just simply use pulley / snatch block I've done some test on my chaanel too 👍

Great video brother. I have the cheaper winches from eBay mainly coming from China and now those you can get them for less than 40.00 US dollars with the remote included and they work amazing. So far no problems with any of them.

Excellent, thanks for the info, I definitely want to try some of the cheaper ones. Have you used yours in mud and water? Heard a few people saying the cheap ones aren't waterproof? For me that would mean they'd last all of two minutes! 🤣🤦
@@DoURC I have with no problems, but I guess all depends on the type of abuse people put them thru. I mean RC stuff like real off road vehicles is going to break due to wear and tear and abuse. But so far I have bean lucky I guess. 👍👍👍

@@DoURC just give it a try like I said before they have some really cheap ones but the have some other ones not as cheap but not as expensive as the traxxas one and probably performs better and the remotes are already bound with the winch. Just do your research. Thanks for the cool videos. Waiting on the next one

Does the supplied metal fairlead plate work with this installation ? I noticed you didn't bother to fit it. Looks pretty sharp if possible.
Yeah the supplied fairlead works with the winch, but if you're keeping the stock front bumper you don't use it, as the stock bumper has the plastic fairlead moulded into it. If you're using a different front bumper, you'd then use the metal fairlead.
I replaced the stock front bumper with a steel one, as the stock one bends quite a lot as you can see in the video. Plus the new steel one looks nicer too imo, plus adds a little weight to the front. 👍

mine crapped out in the first month of use, NOT WATER/SPLASHPROOF!!!
That's no good. Mine has been in water more times than I can count and is definitely waterproof. 👍
I am unable for the life of me to find a metal/ aluminum bumper that works with this winch on the defender.
With a tiny trim you can use the metal bumper I have on it now if you look at my most recent videos. 👍

I've actually changed the bumper already for a metal one so it sits closer in to the body and adds a bit of weight on the front. 👍
