A tour of NUUK, capital of GREENLAND - Meeting locals & first impressions

  • Hi everyone! This is the third video in my Iceland & Greenland series. In the previous episode, I flew from Reykjavik in Iceland to Nuuk in Greenland.
    When you arrive at any new destination, you need to find your feet and orientate yourself. Greenland and Nuuk, its capital, is no exception.
    I took to the streets early morning, partly to form raw impressions of this remote, northernmost capital city of the world, but also because it is such an exciting, mysterious destination.
    In this video, I walk all the way from my hotel in the harbour to the city centre. I visit a Greenlandic supermarket and was surprised to see that they have seemingly abundant supplies of certain items I did not expect them to have. I also met some locals in the centre who gave me directions and tips about the city, before venturing to the Hans Egede statue and enjoying spectacular views. Later on in the day I also stumbled across a local market and engaged with one of the merchants.
    It is fair to say that this outing gave me a good introduction to Greenland and a solid baseline from which to explore Nuuk further in other vlogs! Please make sure that you watch my other vlogs of Nuuk as well!
    Stay tuned for more adventures and exploring! Hit those like and subscribe buttons!

    You should have taken the squash soda or faxe kondi soda. All danish brands but the faxe kondi tastes better in Greenland than Danish version, because they have better water.

    Enjoyed this one, very different to how I imagined Greenland would be. Nuuk is like a lifesize version of one of those miniature model villages. The rusty globe was far from complete yet there was your country of South Africa. Think you were meant to be there, Willie, even though your rucksack had given up😊. Looking forward to watching the next one, the silent walk at midnight.

      Cheers Sheila. This was an incredible place to visit and experience. I did a bit of research re the architecture so there were no real surprises for me on that front, but I have to say I did not expect the weather to be as nice as it was, and I think the amount of fruit in the supermarket also surprised me! The people I engaged with also spoke better English than I thought they would. I'll tell you what - that moment with the rusty globe was a profound one that really grabbed me, as I realised again how far I was from home. A mixed feeling of homesickness and appreciation for the opportunity to be there. Not to mention my red soft drink (called a "cooldrink" in South Africa) that tasted like home! Thanks again for watching, hope you enjoy the midnight walk and the rest of the Greenland / Iceland series :)

    The meaning of the house colors in Greenland back in the days, doesnt have the same meaning today;
    Red: Churches and stores, including the houses where the priest or shop owner lived. The most commonly used color.
    Yellow: Hospitals, including the houses where the doctors or nurses lived.
    Green: Radio communications, or later, telecommunications buildings in general.

    Creo haber leido que la ciudad tiene unos 20.000 habitantes, pero parace mas grande, ya sea por lo extendida, por el auge de la construccion que se nota al ver tantas gruas en actividad, su activo tráfico. Una ciudad muy interesante, colorida, con moderna arquitectura, pero con un clima bastantee extremo. Se pude saber cual es la temperatura promedio en los meses de verano o en estos dias en el que compartis estos videos?. Gracias. Saludos desde Santa De Argentina.
